" I couldn't get my money (voucher) back till after a year from day the flight was supposed to be." I don't know who told you that, but this is inaccurate. Your travel funds are valid 1 year from the date you purchased your ticket. A year after the day of the flight is way too late to use the travel funds. Assuming you cancelled your flight, ordinarily you should have those funds available for future use. The funds are available under your reservation number. However, if you booked a flight more than a year in advance (and as an aside, I'm not sure how you even did that, as Southwest flight bookings rarely go out more than a year that I've seen - currently they go out to April 2020, barely 6 months from now), wouldn't the travel funds be invalid since it's more than 12 months from the date of booking? But I also suppose, like @chgoflyer also mentioned, if the funds did expire before you were able to use them, you could have them reissued for a fee. That is why the Southwest rep mentioned they were keeping $100. If you don't use the funds a year after you make your initial purchase, they expire. However, they can be reissued for a $100 fee, and it sounds like that is what they did. --Jessica

Heh, this is a TRUE story: several years ago I flew to a music festival and won a festival-themed guitar (only one is made and raffled each year, at this festival). No guitar case, just the guitar itself. No way in heck was I going to let it out of my sight. I was tweeting Southwest in addition to talking to the lady at the gate, and explained the situation, and they gave me an entire overhead bin to myself for my guitar 😄 Thank *goodness* my connecting flight did not have to deplane! It was quite the experience, but with that said, if I can bring a guitar, you should be able to bring a guitar + case on board 😉 --Jessica

It's funny, I never used to take advantage of the free checked bags because I was always afraid that my luggage would get 'lost' somehow, or I wanted to avoid the time it took to go retrieve the luggage from baggage claim vs. having my luggage with me and I can deplane immediately and get a taxi / Uber / etc. My luggage is an average size piece that I can either take on the plane or check. Now, however, I admit I find it more convenient to check the bag and bring larger toiletries. Rolling my suitcase around the airport for hours, through TSA, etc., gets old 😉 When you don't do it for awhile, you get used to it!! --Jessica

As others have said, Early Bird 'checks' you in 36 hours in advance in order to give you a better boarding position, but you still have to check in yourself to obtain said boarding pass and board the flight. The great benefit is, it doesn't matter if you check in 24 hours ahead or a few hours ahead, as your boarding pass is already assigned to you. You just have to check in and print / download (etc) it. --Jessica

In regards to the nonstops to Vegas disappearing, you can add me to that list, as nonstops from PHL to LAS went away this year (2019). My last nonstop was booked in October 2018. I just make do and book flights with stops. To the previous poster: I can't believe not having a nonstop flight would stop you from going to Vegas altogether! Not me, I love Vegas too much lol. But I believe these flight consolidations, at least this year's, are obviously due to the MAX 8 grounding issues. --Jessica

I'm so entertained that you mentioned Wilmington DE ... :smileyvery-happy: I didn't think that any major airlines serviced that airport - it's rather small and for private planes, or so I thought. If you look at their web site http://www.flywilmilg.com/ their arrives/departures info is essentially blank / under construction :catwink: If you try to book a flight from ILG to ... basically anywhere (I tried ILG to MIA on cheaptickets.com as an example), the instructions literally say to take a train to 30th Street Station and fly from the PHL airport :catvery-happy: :catvery-happy: :catvery-happy: --Jessica

^Yes, I mentioned that in my original post. While it's easy to see the cost differences when rebooking, if the flight options say -27 or +12 or +66, it's not entirely obvious what the starting price point was when you go to rebook. It would be nice to have your original payment total listed either in your original reservation details online or as you are rebooking so when you see +12 (etc.) you can say "Oh, my original airfare was $150 and with this flight change of +12 I am now paying $162" and so on. I like knowing the total amounts, not just the price differences :catwink: --Jessica

I've heard of people getting credit cards for the points, and then closing them, rinse and repeat multiple times ... that practice seems a little ... dishonest, to say the least. Despite that, the SWA CC has tempted me more than once to sign up for it. I have not given in to temptation :catwink:

I've never heard of bags not going to the final destination if the connecting flights are all under one reservation (i.e., you book a flight with 1-2 stops). Did you book these flights separately? If you did, then you might have an issue, but any flight that I have ever taken that has 1-2 stops and I check a bag, the bag always goes to the final destination. --Jessica

This is a good reminder about travel fund expiration dates. I always use my travel funds within a few months so I haven't run into an issue with them expiring on me, but to be clear - you have to not only redeem but *complete the flight* before your travel funds expire? Let's do a hypothetical example: you have $50 in travel funds that expire in December 2019. If you redeem those funds in October 2019 for a flight in January 2020 ... what happens? Will you not be able to apply the funds? --Jessica

It's hard to say, especially with the MAX 8 grounding. SWA can change flights without notice. In my case, they've done it from PHL - LAS this year, they used to have one nonstop flight a day (sometimes 2) and they have eliminated them this year. The last nonstops I took were in October of 2018. The 'cheapest' flights now have 2 stops - ugh. Hopefully nonstops will be added back once the MAX 8 grounding is behind us and SWA gets more planes back in service. --Jessica

Agree! In my dreams they would display your entire flight price history for each flight, so you can see what you originally booked, what your current flight price is, and anything in between. If I rebooked a flight 5 times in 3 months, I want to see the history and brag about it! :catvery-happy: It would also be a convenient way to see your unused travel funds, as that is kind of 'hidden' as well except in your reservation change e-mail (and in 3 months you'll forget that you have $30 in unused funds lying around). As of now, I keep track of flight price changes using Notes on my iPhone ... when I remember :catwink: --Jessica

Thank you!! That is what I figured. It's strange to me that AA is not nearly as accommodating when it comes to flight changes, considering that they are the largest airline in the world. You would think they would give at least some flexibility for changes, even for the 'basic economy' fare. But you know what they say, you get what you pay for ... especially with them! --Jessica

If you are anything like me, after you book a flight you are constantly checking SWA to see if there are cheaper flight options so you can rebook and get credit. I rarely remember what I paid for my flight and I always dig up my reservation confirmation e-mail which has the price listed, and I compare that with SWA's current flights and prices, and rebook if I see a cheaper fare. It would be nice, in My Trips online where it lists your upcoming flights, if they listed the price you paid for the flight. Currently, it shows the estimated amount of points you will receive, and the type of fare (ex. "Wanna Get Away") but it doesn't show the flight cost. I think this information would be helpful to have displayed as part of your reservation information online. Yes, I know that when you go to "Change Flight" the web site will show you any reductions or increases in fare for the available flights based on what you originally paid, which is very handy, but it would still be nice to have your original (or modified) flight price information available as part of your reservation information on the site. --Jessica

It's not a scam, but I have found less value in it over time. I bought it a few times when it was $25 ($12.50 each way) but when they increased it to $35 I have used it less. (That $10 makes a difference lol.) For most of my flights when I check in right at the 24 hour mark I am in the As or high Bs most of the time -- there have been times when I am at the end of the B group and I am still able to get a window or aisle seat towards the front of the plane - so I'll save my money unless it's REALLY inconvenient to check in 24 hours in advance - which hasn't happened yet! :edits: Wow, I just checked some of my SWA reservations and Early Bird is $25 for ONE way only! $50 for both flights! Crazy! I see on the site it says that EB can range between $15-$25. I am not sure how you get the cheaper option, but for my flights (I have 7 one-way flights booked from now until the end of the year) they are all $25 each. I also checked my e-mail history and the last time I purchased EB was in 2013, and it was $25 for both flights (roundtrip). Back in 2011, it was just $20 total. --Jessica

Hi folks, I have been flying Southwest almost exclusively for the past decade. Over the years I have become more adventurous with my flight bookings, booking here and there and changing flights on a whim if I find a better flight time, price, or want to extend my trip by a day or two. I love that with SWA you can change flights any time, and pay NOTHING except the fare difference if the flight price is higher, or you are credited if the flight price is lower. I've become so used to rebooking flights that it came as a huge shock when I wanted to change a flight I booked with American (at the time, it was cheaper than SWA when I booked). Do you have any idea how much they charge *just* to change a flight? $200!! I read it multiple times thinking it must be a joke. Who has $200 on *top* of the price difference just to modify a flight? Granted, my flight is a 'basic economy' fare so I don't even have the option to change it online at all - I'd have to call. I've thought about canceling the flight directly, but I am not sure if I lose the funds or if I can apply the funds to a future flight (which would be preferable), or if I get charged a fee just to cancel the flight. Madness. Has anyone dealt with American and changing / canceling flights? What did you do? Thank you SWA for no change fees, you have no idea how much of a game changer that is when compared to other airlines!! --Jessica

Not sure what Denver Air Connection is (another airline?), but this doesn't sound like a Southwest problem if DAC charged you a fee to change a flight ... Southwest doesn't charge fees for flight changes, you only pay the difference in fare if the fare increases when you rebook, or you get a credit if the fare decreases when you rebook. One of the many perks of Southwest :cathappy: --Jessica

This has been my experience from PHL to LAS. The last nonstop flight I had was in October 2018. All this year they have had 1-2 stop flights only, with 2 stops being the 'cheapest' of course. Flights in general have increased in price fairly significantly - I am lucky to get a RT for under $400 for some times of the year and I have seen some RT flights literally double that price for the Wanna Get Away fare alone. Prior to this year, flights in the $300 RT range were normal. Not anymore :catsad: I was very lucky though, for one PHL - LAS trip, to get $129 one way flights with one stop each ($258 RT) for this October - I booked back in April/May of this year. This pricing has not been the norm but due to a sale, the early bird catches the worm!! --Jessica

I don't think people are very aware just how much Southwest relies on the 737 MAX 8. Southwest had 34 of those planes in operation before the grounding - the most of any airline in the world. So of course, Southwest is being impacted the most by the grounding and not having those planes in service. Cancellations and delays are going to happen because they are stretched thin with the remaining plans that they have in service. With that said, I fly Southwest frequently (not enough to get A list, but I fly about 1/2 that, around 10-12 roundtrip flights a year) out of PHL and have never had any major problems where I couldn't get to my destination. PHL is a rather large airport though, and I can understand cancellations happening more frequently at smaller airports. Still - I find it hard to believe that rebooking on Southwest would have been more expensive than the $1200 you rebooked ... how could they not have any alternatives? Where were you flying out of? --Jessica
