There's nothing unclear about the process. The airline tells people that if they want to transfer points, they will have to pay a fee   -- then the airline explains what the fee will be.   The only thing accurate about your post is the title because it really makes no sense at all to transfer points. ... I suspect what you are are forgetting is that the discount applies only to the base fares. Price of a ticket is composed of base fare+TSA fee + other fees (typically imposed by airports).     So Southwest eats those other fees and you get a discount on the base fare only. ... View more

Why is the question.   Shortage of planes is the answer. Boeing is coming up well short on plane deliveries while plane retirements continue. The reason tfor that suggestion is that SW can do the cancel and add of your companion in real time -- minimizing the risk that someone else could grab the last seat on the plane - thus leaving your companion without a seat.   Other than that, you can cancel and then book your companion yourself. ...
