I haven't checked luggage in over 25 years. After the second time my luggage did not arrive, once again with very specific clothing required, a suit for an international presentation & a banquet down the first time, that was the very last time I ever checked luggage.
I do love your thinking. It's a great idea if it works for you. However, never have the luxury to sit around and wait for 30 rows of people to deplane. But if I had the time it sounds very entertaining.

Sorry about your experience. But I think that's an anomaly. And it seems reactionary to take your business elsewhere after a single incident. Keep in mind that you could experience a rude gate agent with any carrier.

Additionally, assuming you are flying domestically it's TSA, not Southwest that requires the ID and they do not need to be told what ID you will be using. Here are the acceptable forms of ID for TSA: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification Flying without an ID is also possible: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/frequently-asked-questions/i-forgot-my-identification-can-i-still-proceed-through-security Southwest does look to see if your name matches an ID if you are checking bags, but I suspect that is still somewhat optionally if push came to shove. You mentioned son and girlfriend... if either are under 18 no ID is required to fly domestically. If you are flying internationally all individuals regardless of age must use a passport. --TheMiddleSeat

Indeed we have seen other examples where trying to book immediately after the schedule release only yields higher fares. I also echo the advice to wait. Over the past year, I have kept an eye on certain international flights, and I have seen wild swings in pricing based on whatever sales SW was running at any given moment. I feel very confident you will see better pricing. Good luck!

@Yzguy for you to use travel funds the funds must be booked and flown by the expiration date so in your case since your funds expire in February and March you wouldn't be able to use those funds on your trip in May. Depending on how much you have in travel funds you could wait until they expire and reach out to Southwest customer relations who might be able to issue a voucher for the funds minus $100 meaning if you have $300 in funds they might be able to issue you a voucher for $200 which has an expiration date 6 months later. There is no guarantee they will do it though as it is a case by case situation. -Blake
