So you're suggesting flying out of the country, just to grab some duty free bottles to fly home with and drink on the plane? It's much easier to just bring your own mini bottles. No, TSA does not care. But yes, SWA DOES care if you open alcohol on the plane. They'd be unlikely to care if your fountain soda from Chick-fil-A is spiked, however. YMMV.

"Normal"? SWA has been flying "normal" planes since December. Many of us have been flying "normally" all year, including the flight crew. And that was BEFORE the vaccine. Now, if you're vaccinated, why do you need someone to check your papers? Or the guy next to you? No offense, but it seems you haven't really been flying, or thought through this much at all.

You can buy the points on sale for this price, or maybe less. But yeah, what company wouldn't want you to buy stock monthly in their company, if they could at will go in and take 6% of the stock back without so much as notifying you? The coincidence of these two events is quite unlike the customer- friendly image I'd had of SWA. I suspect a new bean counter got hired, and is busy reworking the finances for short term gain with no regard for long term effects.

Hmm, sounds fine to me. You were told to follow the FAA regulations, and got annoyed apparently. Then you were called "lovey" when he helped you find your boarding pass. The rest of the fracas was initiated by you and your husband. I'm surprised if he works in the industry, he didn't realize that's common vernacular for male flight attendants, and possibly also gate agents. So, much ado about nothing. You are frankly being uptight and overly sensitive. You'll get no sympathy from most folks here, I suspect. In short, "Relax, Karen".

Hilarious...I had HNL tickets for this list weekend for the same reason. Canceled after not wanting to put the parents through the testing hassles. We all did it for KOA in November and it was a bit of a pain getting tests here and getting through the airport, but probably better now. I also did OGG in January, and it wasn't too bad. If you don't hear back, assume KOA was fine for Memorial Day. Hopefully by then they'll soften or eliminate all this testing stuff.

Thanks, it wasn't a big deal. A week of smell ending with a day of fever. And 90 days of unrestricted travel. Almost worth the hassle. 😉 Don't trust Hawaii. Their vaccine passport concepts are illogical and inconsistent. From what I read, you'll still need pretesting. Maui even wants to ADD posttesting, regardless of vaccination. The vaccine passport might only avoid a second test in Kona. I'm going there end of May, and hopefully this will be settled out. But the good news is... in my experience Walgreens is painless now for fast PCR testing. Got it done in an hour in FL. Hopefully it's as fast and easy to book in CA next month.

We didn't have to get return tests, because we had the waiver for having had Covid. But I hear they are fairly easy and cheap to get.

Yep, the best we can do is: 1. Be public and vocal about our displeasure. 2. Avoid accruing points in any way that unnecessarily uses fungible assets like TF or cash. 3. Use the points whenever possible. 4. Take advantage of other SW policies that benefit us. They've broken my trust for sure. I was able to use the flight change option on a recent booking to immediately change the flight to a closer and more expensive airport, but at the original cost. Not sure why, but I took advantage of it. I lost about $300 in this devaluation. I saved more than that on the 4 tickets. So I guess I can consider myself "made whole". A class action wouldn't make you any money anyways... unless you're the lawyer. So do what you can to make yourself feel less burgled. Keep in mind that cheaper flights are a better deal with points due to taxes. If you don't need the flight credit for A list, consider burning some points.

So she's out 6%, plus or minus whatever difference in fares. That's another gripe I have with SWA... (one of the few, but this point thing is one more). You can't book more than several months out, making annual trip planning difficult. Even though they extended the expiration, you still have to sit on the funds until the flight itinerary is released, and then you're that much closer to them expiring. I fly a lot, so I have to be careful which flights are near expiration if I cancel them. So I took the points deal to "reset" all the expiring funds. They just thanked my patronage by taking a 6% tip from me.

Your analogies aren't quite correct. Yes, raising prices for airline tickets would have been typical inflation. We'd all have to pay more for future flights. But there would be no loss in instantaneous value. This is more like a company reducing your stock portfolio by 6%. You've already invested in the company. Had you cashed out last week, you'd have more money than today. ONLY existing investments have been devalued. They just grabbed 6% from their best investors and moved it to their side of the ledger. If they'd have raised prices 6%, we'd all have to share in the pain. And when any other asset like a house goes up in value, you get to sell it for MORE, not less. Is this an asset like stocks or a house? Obviously not. But when a company incentivizes me with tangible assets, and then further offers me the opportunity to "buy in" more by converting TF to points, and then secretly takes 6% of them from me, I call it deceitful.

@bwallet wrote: I'm sure that this was done primarily for accounting purposes. Points represent a liability on their books. If they devalue points, they instantly improve their balance sheet. Primarily? Would there be a secondary reason to instantly take 6% back that you have to your loyal customers? Other than to piss them off? Maybe give us 6 months notice so we can use the points. This would help fill the flights back up to normal levels, and do a BETTER job of decreasing existing liabilities.

I hope they allow us to use the expired coupons. I'm told they will. But they just devalued RR points, and they've already devalued drink coupons by not offering new ones for current flights. I have a stack of weathered paper in my flight bag. Anyone sitting around me on the first flight they resume full service may be getting free drinks.

Not that this is the place to discuss it but... relax. As illogical as their rules are, I don't see them getting "worse". Hundreds of thousands of people fly every day with masks. No notable transmission risk. They only require you to get tested to visit islands, not to fly. Why would they then require you get vaccinated to fly? And by the time they COULD because most are vaccinated, the risk is past based on herd immunity because most are vaccinated. Some destinations may decide to require vaccine passports, but I don't see airlines themselves requiring them. But then, I'm being logical.

Yeah, this is kinda lame, especially after letting us convert cash to points. Not what I would have expected from SWA. Rather than increasing prices on everyone, they increase prices on only the money already collected by existing costumers. Kinda like charging less for new cable customers than existing ones... but worse.

They normally won't check... especially if it's underweight. But when I was shopping for luggage, only the 30" bags exceeded the limits. Anything 28" and under (usually anything that comes in a set) will be fine. The extra large ones seemed too big to risk. I don't recall the wheels factoring into the math.

I forgot to mention you can change the day as well, for up to several days sooner or later. So you can theoretically move a $50 midday midweek flight to a $150 Friday night, at a more expensive airport like BUR instead of LAX. Really a nice perk.

You have 72 hours to change to another time or nearby airport for no increase in cost. Usually this is because your original itinerary changed significantly. Sometimes I can't tell what changed. I use this about 1/3 of the time. I have 3 airports equidistant, so I pick the best flight based on my current needs. Sometimes it saves me a lot of money, since the smaller airports can cost a lot more. It seems to come and go unpredictably these days, with all the schedule changing due to Covid, etc.

You go try that. "If your identity is confirmed...". I'm guessing if you "have no ID" as you state, you won't get very far. Or maybe they'll just pull you up in the computer. If you don't EXIST in the computer, good luck to you. I see you like to try to split hairs with semantics. Forgetting your ID card is not the same as not having a verifiable identification. Read the first paragraph. The irony is... that sort of ID verification is exactly the point of the discussion. If it's okay (as you so vociferously state) to fly on a plane "without ID", then why are we quibbling that only having 4 or 5 ways to verify your identity for voting is bad? Thanks for proving my point.

@TheMiddleSeat wrote: @gsking wrote: I want my airlines to fly planes safely and my fellow voters to have ID... the same ID they need to fly on a plane. It's really that simple. If you're trying to make more of it, you aren't interested in legal and fair voting. I keep seeing this argument, the problem with it is no ID is actually required. TSA accepts multiple forms of identification, BUT if you do not have identification you can still get on the plane after answering additional questions. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification Southwest requests an ID when checking a bag. While I don't see anything that specifically says what happens should you not have an ID, the simple way around this is to not check a bag. Southwest does not request an ID at any other time. Not citing any opinion about IDs and voting, just that the argument comparing voting to flying is extremely flawed. --TheMiddleSeat Right... so why are we discussing voting on a flying forum? It's entirely absurd to expect SWA to factor in. Why aren't they talking about other more important issues? I didn't hear anyone complaining about their stance on genocide in China, or the border crisis. They involve MUCH more serious issues, with many more than the 200,000 people were talking about in GA. And they're like, dying. So there's that. And while we're at it, you're agreeing with me that you need to VERIFY YOUR ID TO FLY. The same way you need to VERIFY YOUR ID TO VOTE. Seriously, you link to this as a rebuttal? "Adult passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel." Uh, what? So since we agree, let's drop it. This is one of the most offtopic discussions on this forum. (I won't even get into the fact that many states including Colorado and Denver have similar or more "restrictive" voting laws, because it's off topic. But you might want to go research if you're curious)

Can we all agree that the rules created by the FAA are mostly inconsistent, capricious, arbitrary, ephemeral, and illogical? I'm sure we can. Now imagine having to enforce those rules with recalcitrant passengers all day long. Like most rules, they try to set a "lowest common denominator" to balance protection and inconvenience. I'm sure most of us would agree 55mph is too slow. But then most of us would agree most OTHER drivers can't drive safely at 75mph like we can. Have some sympathy for the FAs having to deal with this crap. Maybe sneak your mask off for a few extra seconds to catch some fresh air. But don't complain if you're caught. At least you didn't get a speeding ticket.
