Southwest has one of the best cancellation / refund / no fees policies in the entire airline industry, so you are correct, it is "business as usual" while the other airlines are adapting Southwest's policies during the coronavirus outbreak. --Jessica

I had this happen to me on one of my flights. I tried to change it online because the price dropped and I could not. I contacted Southwest via Twitter (DM - Direct Message) and explained the situation and they rebooked my flight for me in a matter of minutes. Give that a try - due to recent events it may take them longer to respond, but they are normally pretty quick to do so. --Jessica

That way if your first flight is late, SW know you are coming for the second, and if you miss it, you'll be protected and not treated as a no show Thanks! This is something I need to start taking advantage of since all of my flights to LAS have stops now (can't get a nonstop anymore). If I do this, I'd get credit for 2 flights, correct? What happens with checked baggage on a multi-city itinerary? Do I have to get it from baggage claim, recheck it, and go back through security at X, or can I check it all the way through to Y? --Jessica

@aespin28 wrote: I had purchased tickets for my family to come visit me in San Francisco a while back before the outbreak occurred. Southwest is now taking a hard stand on not refunding my tickets. They would only give them back as a credit in the passengers name (which I purchased the tickets with my own card) This is standard practice. Southwest does not give refunds on Wanna Get Away fares. If you cancel your flight, you are given the balance as a credit to use within 1 year since the date you purchased the airfare. That's pretty generous considering Southwest does not charge any cancellation fees, like all other airlines do, ironically up until now. The other airlines are enacting no cancellation fees which Southwest has always done. --Jessica

Southwest claims flexibility, yet the corona virus will still be around early April. Surprisingly, united airlines cancelled my ticket and issues a new voucher to extend for another year. take some notes southwest. You issued a voucher due to issues on your end and now with the virus you cant extend me and my husbands voucher. very disappointing. If your expiration date is April 8, that means you originally reserved your flight on April 8, 2019, and cancelled it sometime after that. You have had all of last year up until now to use your travel funds (an entire year). Please do not blame the virus for not being able to use your travel funds by the expiration date when you could have easily used them last summer or fall when this virus was not an issue. --Jessica

@sheryls wrote: They basically said that they will NOT accommodate but you are more than welcome to pay the additional fares for changes in flights. Every other airline is accommodating customers' requests due to the virus outbreak and companies cancelling all travel. SW doesn't care. There's nothing to accommodate here because the other airlines are doing what Southwest already does: no fees to change flights. All other airlines charge fees as high as $200 (on top of the difference in flight cost) just to change a flight. The airlines are now waiving those change fees. Southwest has never charged fees to change flights, so there's nothing they need to do differently. --Jessica

There's a lot of assumptions here. 1) There's no way to prove or disprove that any SWA employee is traveling to coronavirus-infected areas. I would think that no one is willingly taking a trip to Italy right now, for example. 2) I haven't heard of SWA employees being given mandatory time off. The only airline that is doing anything like this is United, and it is only for "voluntary unpaid leave." JetBlue is "considering" it as well. Just because someone is sick, it does not mean that they should be barred from flying. Things happen, and someone probably reserved that flight weeks or months in advance. They paid for their ticket just like everyone else. To be unable to board because of a cold / cough / etc. is a little extreme. There is no proof that what they have is contagious; many people who cough have allergies. --Jessica

I don't know if this is related, but I've been having log in issues as well. I can log in successfully, for example on Southwest.com, but when I go to another page of the site (i.e. "My Account") I have to log in again. And if I go to "Recent Activity" - I have to log in again. So on and so forth. Sometimes I am able to navigate successfully, but as of late I've had to constantly re-log in. --Jessica

What you wore was entirely unnecessary, which is what everyone is gently trying to tell you. Thousands upon thousands of people fly on planes every single day with no need to wear a protective "tyvek suit" as you tried to do. You may not think you were causing any harm to anyone, but I can guarantee that wearing such an outfit was being disruptive to everyone around you. But, it sounds like you were able to board a flight anyway, so this matter seems to have resolved itself. --Jessica

$400 one way seems incredibly high for a Wanna Get Away fare. Where are you flying from? From PHL, flights are generally more expensive than they were (thank you MAX grounding) but depending on where I fly I can get rates under $100 one way. The absolute cheapest I've seen is PHL > BNA for $45 during the week. It all depends on where you are from and where you are going. Flights to Vegas are averaging $200 one way (so $400 round trip). In the past I always considered a good flight $150 one way, or below. --Jessica

I just flew on Southwest this weekend - left Friday 2/28, returned Tuesday 3/3. No issues at all on the flights. Since Southwest only flies primarily in the United States and Mexico / the Caribbean, they are the least likely to issue any sort of compensation due to the coronavirus at this time. There is no reason not to use your travel funds to fly on Southwest. Travel funds expire one year after date of original purchase, so you have had since April 2019 to use them. My advice, don't try to take advantage of the coronavirus outbreak by trying to get an extension on your travel funds that you could have used months ago before the virus started making headlines. --Jessica

I agreed to fly out in the morning, and not realizing that these two bags can be carry-ons because my suitcase was way under 50 pounds. The 50 pound limit is for checked baggage; if your bags are under 50 pounds, they are free to check. If they are over 50 pounds, you have to pay a fee. To carry on your bags they need to meet certain size requirements, and you also need to make sure you have no liquids above 3.4 oz. It's unclear based on your post if your bags met the size requirements to carry on. --Jessica

Who says they don't? Not sure why you are calling out Southwest, specifically, when they are a US-based airline that doesn't fly outside the US (except to Mexico and the Caribbean). While cleanliness is always important, if you are specifically worried about the coronavirus headlines in the news, you are much more likely to catch the flu than that virus right now, in my opinion. --Jessica

I've actually wondering this myself - I don't know how many seats are reserved for each fare type. Would be great to know that information! Considering with Business Select you are 'guaranteed' an A1 - A15 boarding position, the max that tier would have is 15 seats. So, the remaining seats on an airplane are either "Anytime" or "Wanna Get Away" fares. My guess is there are more WGA fares than Anytime, but the percentage of each is anyone's guess. --Jessica

This kind of thing changes constantly. Some days you will get just 1 point = $1 spent (so a $199 stay would give you 199 points - not too great), other days they will give you a "double" point promotion (so 398 points) and other times they will give you thousands of points for your stay. That is when you book 😁 Currently I have a hotel reservation booked where I will get 6,000 points for my stay. I am seriously considering changing it, as my preferred hotel is now offering 10,000 points, and others a little further away are offering 8,000 with a "spend a little more" to get even more points, up to 16,000! Really, really tempted ... --Jessica

No no no no no. "Email x to work with her TODAY!" is almost guaranteed to put you in the rejected pile every time. And - aren't cover letters supposed to be more than a sentence or two? If reworded a bit, it sounds more like a resume objective that goes at the top of the resume (which is also something that's getting used less, I believe). I've never written a cover letter, but I thought they were closer to one page or at least a 1/2 page in length. --Jessica

On all four of those flights, when I asked several people to move their bag so that I could take the empty seat next to them, they told me the seat was blocked for their spouse, friend, child etc. etc. IMO @emrem01 - just move on. There's plenty of aisle and window seats on an airplane, assuming that's what you were going for. In my experience I can always get one in the first 10 rows of the airplane when I am in the A and even B groups. C group is a bit harder, but I have managed aisle/window a handful of times; most of the time I just head towards the back and find a seat there. Unless I have a really tight connection to make (and I try to make my connections last at least an hour so I don't have to worry about it), there's no difference sitting in the front or back of the plane. The deplaning process is pretty quick regardless of where you sit. --Jessica

Resort fees in general is a whole other topic of discussion that doesn't have anything to do with Southwest itself. Many hotels add resort fees in addition to the hotel charge, tax, and fees per night. Vegas hotels and any casino-based hotel are a great example of this. I just tried booking a hotel through Southwest for a popular Vegas hotel that charges resort fees (NYNY). On the checkout page, the resort fee is listed pretty clearly in the Confirmation section before you book. You are charged the resort fee when you check in regardless of if you prepay or pay later, since it is a separate charge handled by the hotel. Here is an example of what you see on the booking page (before you click Confirm Reservation) -- Confirmation 3/7/20 - 3/8/20 1 night 1 room 1 adult 1 Night $199.00 USD Taxes & Fees $27.41 USD Grand Total Pay Later Your card will be charged on February 28, 2020 $226.41 USD Points Earned Posted after check-out 199 Earn 2,000 Rapid Rewards® points Resort Fee Paid at check-in $37.00 USD To me it's clear, but I am used to resort fees for various hotel properties, so I can understand it being a sticker shock if you are not used to them. What hotel did you book where this became an issue? I'd be interested to try reserving a room to see if it shows similar info to the above hotel during checkout. --Jessica

https://www.southwest.com/html/generated/help/faqs/boarding_the_plane_faq.html Do families get to preboard? Two adults traveling with a child six years old or younger may board during Family Boarding, which occurs after the “A” group has boarded and before the “B” group begins boarding. If the child and the adult are both holding an “A” boarding pass, they should board in their assigned boarding position. ------ Hope this helps, Jessica

Interesting. Many of these points address the inaccurate weight / baggage issues, which has been previously discussed as an issue, but it's been undermined how big of an issue this is or what this really impacts, if anything. The most concerning to me is the 24 planes in an "unknown airworthiness state." That's fairly generic though. The planes could have been perfectly fine, albeit not properly inspected to prove that point. Immediately after that, the next few points talk about 88 planes, so I am not sure why there is a jump in #s, or if the 24 is included with the 88, or separate. 24 planes is about 3% of Southwest's fleet. 88 is closer to 12%. Also: no airline is perfect, but that's not to say that Southwest should not address these issues ASAP, but if you think other airlines don't make any miscalculations (etc) at all, then you would be mistaken. Southwest is one of the top US-based airlines in the country, and I am willing to bet other airlines big (Delta, AA, others) and small (think Spirit, Allegiant, others) have their own issues and problems. --Jessica

According to an article published today in the Chicago Tribune, the only airlines that are offering any sort of carbon offset program in the United States are JetBlue and United. Many of them are "planting trees." I am all for environmental preservation and awareness, but personally, planting trees in particular isn't going to have any true effect on carbon emissions for another 20-30 years until the tree is fully grown. I wouldn't base my flight plans on whether or not an airline offered this service. Also: according to the article, planes account for about 2.5% of global carbon dioxide production. i don't have any other stats handy, but I am willing to bet the farm that cars produce more on a global scale. Are you going to give up driving as well? Or do you already drive an eco-friendly electric car? https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/transportation/ct-biz-airline-flight-carbon-offsets-20200214-4nlum6gzobhlxevul4pla6q2ki-story.html --Jessica
