The best part of this entire thread is the OP somehow getting a boarding assignment of "C62." I hope you framed that boarding pass! Despite the one other recent poster having a somewhat similar run of bad luck, there's no conspiracy here. Your boarding position is assigned based on a variety of factors already outlined. If you 'wait' to check in and you don't have A-List, EB, etc., you are all but guaranteed to get a C position. There are exceptions: mainly when flights are not 100% full. There have been times when I forgot to check in for a few hours, got a C, and was able to manage an aisle seat. Rare, but it happens. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones ๐ --Jessica

I'll chime in and say that if anyone is going to 'save' seats, the Exit Row should not be an option. The A Listers and Early Boarders should get first crack at those seats since they are the first ones on board -- and they shouldn't be able to save them for anyone else. I think the Flight Attendant did the right thing! Kudos. --Jessica

This thread is over a year old and I doubt this user will be back, but I have several questions about what the user attempted to do: 1) The user preferred to go to the airport to purchase tickets. OK. That's not entirely out of the realm of possibility, so let's go with it. 2) "My card was not accepted." Debit card? Credit card? Gift card? Other? 3) "The attendance told me that I can pay my reservation by phone." Why not just pay with a different card or form of payment at the counter? This is where things start to go astray. 4) "I made a new reservation by phone but as I needed to pay in cash they told me to go to the airport." ...what? What about the card you tried to pay with in Step 2? In addition: how can you make a reservation by phone and 'pay in cash'? If you didn't give any payment information while on the phone, did you ever really have a reservation? 5) "I went to the airport and paid my reservation." In cash? OK. Let's continue. "The attendance told me that he didn't have paper to give me a ticket about my payment and he just told me everything is OK." I assume the user means they couldn't get a receipt. In this extremely unusual situation, I wouldn't leave until getting some sort of confirmation that I paid for my airfare with cash. 6) "I checked my reservation and it's cancelled." After all this I can only assume that the user never had a reservation at all, but it's extremely hard to say. I've never tried booking a Southwest reservation over the phone, but of course before the days of the internet, booking via phone was much more common. Even so: I didn't think you could make a reservation over the phone, and proceed to pay in cash in person at the airport. How would that even work? Do you have to go to the airport within 24 hours to pay? What if you don't go to the airport for a week or a month? I assume your flight would get canceled if you don't show up to pay -- assuming you can even do this at all. So many questions, not enough answers. --Jessica

When you don't have assigned seating, people 'saving' seats is potentially what you will run into. It happens at nearly every General Admission concert as well. It's first come, first serve, and people often save 'spots' for their friends who are further back in line. It is *right*? Not particularly. Do people *do it*? All the time. Now, in regards to Southwest, should folks board and attempt to 'save' an entire row of seats, specifically the Exit row? No. If any seat saving 'policy' could be implemented, it would be to not 'save' any seats in the Exit row. Any other row should be fair game except for that. Someone else also mentioned in a different thread that pre-boarders (i.e. those needing help to board, families, etc.) should only be able to sit in the first few rows of the plane. I agree to that as well. Implement those two 'policies', and it would probably solve a lot of complaints. --Jessica

I've seen quite a few threads about 'seat' savers and people's displeasure of it - as far as I'm concerned, people can sit where they want, and Southwest does not approve or disprove of 'saving' seats because they have no official policy on it. I've flown Southwest for 10+ years and maybe I've always been blind or unaware of my surroundings, but people saving seats has never once been an issue for me. As a solo traveler, I almost always get an aisle or window seat in the first 10ish rows of the plane, period. I'm not picky. I don't go for the Exit row. If people want to fight over those seats, knock yourself out, but that's not a hill I am willing to die on lol. The solution, if you are unhappy with the seat savers, is to go to every other airline on Planet Earth where you pick exactly the seat you want. Problem solved. No assigned seats? Then this is potentially what you will have to deal with (but to reiterate, I never have). I'd rather fly with Southwest's no assigned seating, free bag check, no *change fees*, and a myriad of other pluses, than any other airline that may have reserved seating, but many more restrictions for everything else. --Jessica

It's not a scam at all. I fill out these surveys here at Reward for Opinions and also through Caesars Entertainment's Say & Play (Vegas) to get Rewards Credits. Surveys are only valid for a specific demographic for a specific period of time, and can be fulfilled at any time. The people making the surveys only need so many responses from so many people. That is why surveys can be closed by the time you click the link to take it, or even when you are in the middle of taking it. You still get a few points even if you aren't qualified for a survey as well, so to me there's no harm done. --Jessica

Considering the flight was only booked yesterday, the fact that the payment is 'pending' is not unusual. It normally takes a few days for the payment to post to my CC. But that aside, assuming the payment does post, then you should have your flight information under your account information on Southwest.com and you should have been e-mailed your itinerary. --Jessica

Interesting that Southwest and JetBlue have essentially tied. I've never flown JetBlue but heard good things about that airline. JB has what I'd consider an extreme version of first class seats called "Mint" ... you're practically enclosed in a pod, with a fully reclining seat, free meals, drinks, wi-fi, and other amenities -- but the average cost of a "Mint" flight is $599 one way ๐ I've checked JetBlue off and on and if I wanted to fly "Mint" from PHL to Vegas I'd be paying a cool $3,000+ roundtrip. I'd better get free food and drinks for paying thousands of dollars for ONE roundtrip flight! ...I think I'll stick with Southwest ๐ --Jessica

^Yes of course - letters with special characters are still letters, after all! But they certainly offer another level of complexity. I would hope that Southwest would be able to handle umlauts and the like in a person's name or address. If not, then that would be a limitation -- but then again, Southwest is primarily a US-based airline, and only recently introduced (some) international travel, so I can potentially understand other language quirks not being supported 100% for now. There are many software programs, not just in the airline world, that have trouble with 'special' characters in certain words/phrases/names. It's certainly not a Southwest-only limitation. --Jessica

Thanks @dfwskier! Correction: I have $42 worth of travel funds now - a different paid flight went down by $13 ๐ A) The airline does not allow people to pay for part of a fight with points and part with cash (apart from TSA fee) Yes, this is what I am discovering. Too bad! Maybe it will be an option in the future, especially if you have unused travel funds that could ultimately reduce the fare of a points-purchased flight. Another potential option: convert travel funds to RR points! ๐ค --Jessica

Posts like this always puzzle me. I wonder what exactly 'happened' 3 years ago to an individual / family to make Southwest issue over $1,000 worth of vouchers. Missed connection? Missed flight? Something else? Considering your user name is 'upset mom of three', I am willing to bet the farm that the compensation had something to do with your kids. You had an entire year to use the funds, that's plenty of time. Sorry, but without more detail regarding your situation, I am not very sympathetic to whatever issue you or your family might have suffered, especially considering you are complaining about it now, on a public forum, 3 years later. --Jessica

^Indeed, that is what I want to do. Here are some more specifics: The flight that I want currently requires 1814 more points to book. I have 1390 points - not enough. When I attempt to change the flight, I get a message that I "don't have enough points to book" which is true, and my options are to buy points or modify my flight (to a different flight within my point threshold). I don't get the option to apply travel funds since I reserved the flight with points. I would think that my $29 would cover the difference, but alas. It's hard to say how long this flight will be available at this price point - and the flight isn't until December so I have some time to play with it. I'm filling out surveys in the interim ๐ I am flying at the end of the month as well, so I will definitely have enough points by early November to change this flight - assuming the flight price doesn't go up, but I imagine it will. --Jessica

Hello fellow travelers, I think I already know the answer to this, but wanted to make a post to verify. I recently booked a flight with RR points. Thinking about switching to a different time, which would require a few more points to reserve. I have $29 in unused travel funds - I don't see a way to apply this to a reservation booked with points. Can it not be done? --Jessica

I take it this was your very first flight with Southwest Airlines. Southwest does not, and has never had, assigned seating. So let's get that out of the way. <<But there wasn't a seat available.>> Yet you got on the plane somehow? How can that be? What was your ticket number? Seat assignments are based on when you check in 24 hours ahead of the flight and go from A1-A60, B1-B60, and C1-C60. My guess is that you did not understand the boarding process, or you were very late to the airport / gate, or you were quite unlucky and got the very last assignment of C60 when you checked in for the flight, to board at the very end of the flight process. Was the plane oversold (which is common)? Was the second seat 'purchased' by the lady really meant for you since there was 'no other seat' by the time you got on the plane? Or did you just not want to sit in a middle seat? This story is missing a few pieces of the puzzle. --Jessica

" I couldn't get my money (voucher) back till after a year from day the flight was supposed to be." I don't know who told you that, but this is inaccurate. Your travel funds are valid 1 year from the date you purchased your ticket. A year after the day of the flight is way too late to use the travel funds. Assuming you cancelled your flight, ordinarily you should have those funds available for future use. The funds are available under your reservation number. However, if you booked a flight more than a year in advance (and as an aside, I'm not sure how you even did that, as Southwest flight bookings rarely go out more than a year that I've seen - currently they go out to April 2020, barely 6 months from now), wouldn't the travel funds be invalid since it's more than 12 months from the date of booking? But I also suppose, like @chgoflyer also mentioned, if the funds did expire before you were able to use them, you could have them reissued for a fee. That is why the Southwest rep mentioned they were keeping $100. If you don't use the funds a year after you make your initial purchase, they expire. However, they can be reissued for a $100 fee, and it sounds like that is what they did. --Jessica

Heh, this is a TRUE story: several years ago I flew to a music festival and won a festival-themed guitar (only one is made and raffled each year, at this festival). No guitar case, just the guitar itself. No way in heck was I going to let it out of my sight. I was tweeting Southwest in addition to talking to the lady at the gate, and explained the situation, and they gave me an entire overhead bin to myself for my guitar ๐ Thank *goodness* my connecting flight did not have to deplane! It was quite the experience, but with that said, if I can bring a guitar, you should be able to bring a guitar + case on board ๐ --Jessica

It's funny, I never used to take advantage of the free checked bags because I was always afraid that my luggage would get 'lost' somehow, or I wanted to avoid the time it took to go retrieve the luggage from baggage claim vs. having my luggage with me and I can deplane immediately and get a taxi / Uber / etc. My luggage is an average size piece that I can either take on the plane or check. Now, however, I admit I find it more convenient to check the bag and bring larger toiletries. Rolling my suitcase around the airport for hours, through TSA, etc., gets old ๐ When you don't do it for awhile, you get used to it!! --Jessica

As others have said, Early Bird 'checks' you in 36 hours in advance in order to give you a better boarding position, but you still have to check in yourself to obtain said boarding pass and board the flight. The great benefit is, it doesn't matter if you check in 24 hours ahead or a few hours ahead, as your boarding pass is already assigned to you. You just have to check in and print / download (etc) it. --Jessica

In regards to the nonstops to Vegas disappearing, you can add me to that list, as nonstops from PHL to LAS went away this year (2019). My last nonstop was booked in October 2018. I just make do and book flights with stops. To the previous poster: I can't believe not having a nonstop flight would stop you from going to Vegas altogether! Not me, I love Vegas too much lol. But I believe these flight consolidations, at least this year's, are obviously due to the MAX 8 grounding issues. --Jessica
