While you know the policy it may be worth asking politely at the gate about how family boarding works. You may be pleasantly surprised at the answer... but maybe not... your mileage may vary. Failing that, when you do board, you may find seats together, maybe not. Failing that you may he able to get someone to trade with you but that doesn't always work either. @gabbylou, there are a couple of click through links on the terms and conditions page listed by @chgoflyer and one of the links indicates that the travel certificate they issue will list an expiration date (though it doesn't give any clues to duration).

A couple of links here with additional context and insight to how Southwest seems to be approaching the expansion: "Additional service details, including plans for previously announced gateways of San Diego and Sacramento, and for Lihue, on Kauai, will be announced in the coming weeks." I think the only folks able to provide a definitive answer are on the Southwest Network Planning Team. Here is the wording from the March 15, 2019 route press release: "Our Network Planning Team constantly reviews our service to address the needs of more than 130 million annual Customers who want nonstop service to places and at times that work for them," said Adam Decaire, Southwest's Vice President of Network Planning. How old are the kids? "Children ages 5-11 traveling without an accompanying Passenger age 12 or older" are considered "unaccompanied minors", there is additional cost, and "only domestic nonstop, or direct flights, not international" flights are eligible. Unaccompanied minors preboard. Hi @Buickgs90, Southwest *should* have time by June to make adjustments needed to the flight schedule if the Max aircraft are still grounded when you fly. @DancingDavidE or others, is there ever a benefit to booking a round-trip flight versus two one-way flights other than the booking convenience? The pricing is the same either way, part of the beauty of flying with Southwest. I'm askingt to double check to make sure I'm not missing something. My default is to book one-way flights, in large part, because it makes it easier to make changes, if needed.

I am sorry to hear about your delay, I would be bummed too! I don't work for the airlines, I'm just another customer, but my *guess* is that Southwest is trying to get their planes in place and repositioned to start getting on track with the normal schedule. The best description I've heard is that airline schedules are like a puzzle that needs to get put together every day. The operational emergency, severe weather, and grounding mean that right now the puzzle is a mess and there is a lot of rearranging that needs to take place. Good luck!

As noted by@DancingDavidE if you pay for the Early Bird Check-In it will cover both of the flights that day: "*EarlyBird Check-In can be purchased at prices ranging from $15 - $25 one-way per passenger. A credit card must be used for the purchase of EarlyBird Check-In." I don't think it's worth it if that is the reason. If you want an earlier boarding position AND automatic assignment of your boarding positions then go for it. Hope this all helps!
