While you know the policy it may be worth asking politely at the gate about how family boarding works. You may be pleasantly surprised at the answer... but maybe not... your mileage may vary. Failing that, when you do board, you may find seats together, maybe not. Failing that you may he able to get someone to trade with you but that doesn't always work either. I also recommend sending the Southwest team a note to log your thoughts on the issue, contact info is found here: https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/Submitting-a-Suggestion-and-or-Complaint/ta-p/87244 As a final note, there are *strong* and opposing opinions expressed about the seating process that you can find here on the discussion boards.

@gabbylou, there are a couple of click through links on the terms and conditions page listed by @chgoflyer and one of the links indicates that the travel certificate they issue will list an expiration date (though it doesn't give any clues to duration).

One more related quote from the end of the following article (bold emphasis added by me): “Well, let’s take one step at a time. Hawaii is already a big deal for us. It’ll take us this year and next to fully build it out,” Watterson said. “We’ll concentrate on that first, get that under our belt, and then figure out where else we can go in the world.” Source: https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news/2019/03/19/southwest-airlines-europe.html

A couple of links here with additional context and insight to how Southwest seems to be approaching the expansion: "Additional service details, including plans for previously announced gateways of San Diego and Sacramento, and for Lihue, on Kauai, will be announced in the coming weeks." Source is Southwest press release: https://www.swamedia.com/releases/release-bc94d941a090ea44998912da1fdcc705-hawaii-here-we-come Item 5 in the following link (non-Southwest source so I can't vouch for the accuracy) describes the approach to inter-island service: https://beatofhawaii.com/southwest-hawaii-inter-island/ My guess is that they want to get a feel for how things are going, identify issues, test pricing etc. then they'll continue to add until they get to a fully optimized schedule of both flights to/from the mainland that integrate the aircraft nicely for inter-island flights. I'm guessing that flights from Hawaii to points beyond the West coast are also somewhere on the wish list too.

I think the only folks able to provide a definitive answer are on the Southwest Network Planning Team. Here is the wording from the March 15, 2019 route press release: "Our Network Planning Team constantly reviews our service to address the needs of more than 130 million annual Customers who want nonstop service to places and at times that work for them," said Adam Decaire, Southwest's Vice President of Network Planning. Source: https://www.swamedia.com/releases/release-c06a3e840c57c0ad7c0871e84c0ed4fa-southwest-airlines-adds-new-nonstop-flights-to-route-map I think with each iteration of the flight schedule we'll see changes though as Southwest grows my hope would be that the number of cities served by direct flight connections continues to grow.

How old are the kids? "Children ages 5-11 traveling without an accompanying Passenger age 12 or older" are considered "unaccompanied minors", there is additional cost, and "only domestic nonstop, or direct flights, not international" flights are eligible. Unaccompanied minors preboard. This page has all of the detail: https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/family/unaccompanied-minors-pol.html These are also both good discussion threads: https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/General-Travel-Policies/Young-traveler-and-possibly-delays/m-p/88627 https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/General-Travel-Policies/unaccompanied-minors/m-p/88599

Edited as my original response left out one link: Hi @cne24, I echo the comment from @dfwskier that past history is not a predictor here, especially when you are looking out to 2020. Having said that, here is the historical information that I am able to find (with the caveat that I have no way to verify the accuracy of the non-Southwest pages): The current Southwest 2019 schedule through November 2, 2019 that shows the service limited to Saturday and Sunday (you can also scroll through the weeks to see that daily flights are available now then the frequency starts to drop off later in the year): https://www.southwest.com/air/flight-schedules/results.html?departureDate=2019-10-27&destinationAirportCode=PLS&originationAirportCode=BWI&scheduleViewType=weekly&timeOfDay=ALL_DAY The Southwest press release from 2017 that announced daily service between FLL and PLS starting on November 5, 2017: http://investors.southwest.com/news-and-events/news-releases/2017/11-05-2017-175953896 A non-Southwest page (I used the site to search for November 2018 flights for Southwest flight 618) that indicates Southwest flight 618 operated from FLL to PLS with only Saturday service until November 3, 2018 then picked up with daily service starting on November 4, 2018. https://info.flightmapper.net/flight/Southwest_Airlines_WN_618?date=2018-11-1 There are other web pages that have historical flight information for sale though it's usually quite expensive. Here is an example: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWA618/history/buy Good luck!

Hi @Buickgs90, Southwest *should* have time by June to make adjustments needed to the flight schedule if the Max aircraft are still grounded when you fly. I hope you enjoy your time in Midwest City, we lived in Moore, OK many years ago when we were stationed at Tinker AFB and it was one of our favorite places to live! And welcome back to flying!

@DancingDavidE or others, is there ever a benefit to booking a round-trip flight versus two one-way flights other than the booking convenience? The pricing is the same either way, part of the beauty of flying with Southwest. I'm askingt to double check to make sure I'm not missing something. My default is to book one-way flights, in large part, because it makes it easier to make changes, if needed.

I am sorry to hear about your delay, I would be bummed too! I don't work for the airlines, I'm just another customer, but my *guess* is that Southwest is trying to get their planes in place and repositioned to start getting on track with the normal schedule. The best description I've heard is that airline schedules are like a puzzle that needs to get put together every day. The operational emergency, severe weather, and grounding mean that right now the puzzle is a mess and there is a lot of rearranging that needs to take place. Good luck!

As noted by@DancingDavidE if you pay for the Early Bird Check-In it will cover both of the flights that day: "*EarlyBird Check-In can be purchased at prices ranging from $15 - $25 one-way per passenger. A credit card must be used for the purchase of EarlyBird Check-In." Source: https://www.southwest.com/html/generated/help/faqs/earlybird_checkin_faq.html Was your thinking that if you paid for the EarlyBird then you would be able to get a seat closer to the front of the plane on the first leg, which would save a few minutes for you to get to the next gate? I don't think it's worth it if that is the reason. If you want an earlier boarding position AND automatic assignment of your boarding positions then go for it. Hope this all helps!

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/03/13/boeing-shares-fall-after-report-says-us-expected-to-ground-737-max-fleet.html Edited to quote the FAA statement found in the article: "The FAA is ordering the temporary grounding of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft operated by U.S. airlines or in U.S. territory. The agency made this decision as a result of the data gathering process and new evidence collected at the site and analyzed today. This evidence, together with newly refined satellite data available to FAA this morning, led to this decision. The grounding will remain in effect pending further investigation, including examination of information from the aircraft's flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders. An FAA team is in Ethiopia assisting the NTSB as parties to the investigation of the Flight 302 accident. The agency will continue to investigate." The article indicates that all airborne MAX aircraft will continue to their intended destinations and be grounded at that point.
