I took a flight yesterday and I brought some Christmas chocolates… a box for the pilots to share in the cockpit and a box for the flight attendants. They were very appreciative and it was a small way to show my gratitude for the great service they always provide!

I don't think you will. Materials Specialist is a different role, but it will get you in the door. You will have internal opportunities available to you after you are hired, especially with the A&P. Good luck!

It depends on you. It could be anywhere from 4-6 weeks. You may need more time, and that’s okay. As long as you can do the job safely.

Training depends on you! There is no set timeline for training and you will be signed off when you are ready to safely do the job. After training, I have had a variety of schedules but directly after training, I didn’t go to overnights, but I did go to PM shift. 1700-0200.

You will got to Dallas for 4 days, but the majority of your training will take place before that at your station. 😉 Welcome to the ramp!

I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. As long as your status is correct, you should be fine. They recently converted to the new system and the previous version did not have colors. 😅 If there was something wrong, you probably would have gotten an email saying you’ve ‘withdrawn’. Don’t worry and welcome to SW. ☺️

Not really. Down on the ramp, we can account for late bags while still working within the threshold. 😀

Your gate checked bags will go to baggage claim.
If you check child items or mobility aids, those will be brought up to the jetbridge and can be picked up as soon as you get off the plane.
Happy travels!

I’ve only ever used the hearing protection that is provided and I feel it is more than adequate. I work on the ramp, so I’m around it for the majority of the day. You always have the option to buy your own hearing protection, and some people do. It’s all about your safety, and what will work for you. Check out the options they provide before you buy anything because you may end up liking what they have! Good luck!

So you’ll do all your classroom/computer training the first week; some call it ‘federal week’. Then you’ll have a few weeks of OJT. It depends on how your station schedules you, but it’ll probably be 3-4 weeks after you start OJT. For rampers, we go to Dallas on Sunday and come back on Thursday night! You’ll only have class Mon-Thurs while in Dallas. Good luck and have fun!

Congrats! I’ve only ever heard of one persons start date being moved up with their permission. They’ll usually come to you if that’s an option, but it’s extremely rare because of all the scheduling involved. As for working in PHX, I am based in Tampa. Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year travel is the busiest time at every airport. You can count on it being very busy during those times. Letting people go? Do you mean being fired or just going home? Fired, not unless its warranted. Just going home, it really depends on your station. It is fairly easy to give shifts away here at TPA. The weekends can be a challenge sometimes. As for how many flights we can work in a shift, it depends on a lot of things. The most I’ve done on a shift is 8 flights. And I will say I average about 4-5 per day. A lot of factors go into how much you’ll actually have to do. Depending on your position during flights, that can make all the difference. You’ll need to get into ‘ramp shape’ and when you are at that point, you’ll notice it gets easier with time. I have muscles everywhere now! It’s great! 😆 You’ll be starting in winter which is nice because you don’t have to worry about the heat. You can learn the job without having to worry about the summer sun. I grew up in PHX and lived there until about 3 years ago, so I know the pain of summer. 😂 I am rambling, but if you have any other questions, feel free to ask! I am happy to help.

My recommendation, get your A&P first. The Avionics tech test mainly focuses on the electrical side. I went to the local community college here in Tampa and was able to take my test on campus. 🙂

We get paid on the 5th and 20th of every month. My first day was on the 4th, so I made the cut off for payday on the 20th. That was my first check. There are no delays if you get your pay set up as soon as you can.

If you cannot go a few paychecks without the money, do not submit your 2 weeks notice yet. You still need to get your start date, and you still have to sign your official offer letter. It wasnt long after my background cleared that I got a start date, but it was a month and a half away. I highly suggest waiting.

I think if you have a spouse, you do not get a companion. But as far as I know, you can list whoever you want as a companion, as long as you have the option to. They will cover travel benefits and rules during your first week, so don’t worry about it, you can ask your question at that time, and you’ll have a for sure answer. ☺️

You can use them right away, basically. As long as you have access to the employee website, you are good. On Day 1, some of us had access, but the majority did not. For your companions, you’ll have to submit documentation and that could take a few days/weeks. I used mine maybe 6 weeks after I started, and now I travel at least once a month. Its great!

Training schedules are usually the schedule of your trainer. It is almost random. Some of us got a 5am start time, some had 3 am, 12pm, or 2 pm. When we were certified, there was no option. They will place you where they need/want you. The majority of us went to the 5pm-2am shift. You really have to have an open schedule to work on the ramp. I am going to hit the 6-month mark soon and I got lucky and will be working 0830-1700 next month. I have worked all shifts during my 6 months. I really do want to emphasize FLEXIBILITY. It is important.
I hope this helps, and isn’t discouraging. Once you get some time under your belt, the schedules will start to level out. Good luck!
