It's possible that the 91" limit may be due to the dimensions of the the cargo hold (i.e. anything longer just won't fit). I suggest contacting Southwest directly with your question. You can find the contact information here: https://www.southwest.com/contact-us/contact-us.html

Plastic coolers are fine. Here's what I found on the Southwest website: Refrigerants: Shipments packed in wet ice will not be accepted unless the ice is contained in sealed polyethylene bags (Ziploc® bags). Frozen gels or dry ice/carbon dioxide are the preferred refrigerants. Dry ice/carbon dioxide may be used as a refrigerant for perishables under the following limitations: Dry ice/carbon dioxide may not weigh more than 5.5 pounds in checked or carryon baggage. The package must be designed to permit the release of carbon dioxide gas to prevent buildup of pressure. The outside of the container must be marked "dry ice" or "carbon dioxide solid." The net weight of the dry ice and the contents of the package must also be shown. A Southwest Airlines Dry Ice Label (WN-659) may be used to meet these marking requirements.

There is absolutely nothing silly about your question! Southwest (and other airlines) have many opportunities for classroom trainers, from new-hire classes and initial training to continuing education classes. I suggest going here: https://careers.southwestair.com/ Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Join Talent community" button. You can enter your information here. Also, keep checking the Southwest Careers jobs page for training opportunities.

You should really change your policy when it comes to UMs Southwest does not consider a 12-year-old to be an adult. They simply do not allow children 12 or over to travel as an unaccompanied minor ("UM"). The ultimate responsibility for a child lies with the child's parent or guardian. If a parent/guardian does not feel safe allowing their child to travel by themself, then they should travel with the child. For what it's worth, I made frequent trips on Southwest by myself when I was 12 and lived to tell about it.

Will the site magically allow me to checkin for the evening flight when it's less than 24 hours? You will still need to check-in for the evening flight at 24 hours prior. You should be able to check-in for your return flight using the same confirmation number unless your outbound trip has a connection. Apparently the system only allows two boarding passes at one time. Let us know how it goes.

Neither Southwest nor the TSA prohibit portable chargers that are rated below 100 Watt Hours. From a brief read of the specs, it appears that your charger is rated at only 59 Watt Hours (58,830mWh). Note that the charger must be carried with you in the cabin. It cannot be put into checked baggage. If you put the charger into a carry-on bag and there's no room for the bag in the cabin, you must remove the charger from the bag before checking it. I would also advice fully discharging the charger as an additional safety precaution. Have a great flight!

Being nervous is a natural part of any interview, but don't worry too much because Southwest interviews are actually FUN! In fact, you'll be expected to show your fun side at the interview. I recommend learning all you can about Southwest before Tuesday...it's history, it's People, it's business, etc. Here's a good place to start: http://southwestonereport.com/2017/about-the-report/ I also recommend becoming familiar with the "Southwest Spirit" and reflecting on how you live it. That's the only reason that I'm aware of that an application would be marked closed/complete upon submission. I suppose that the same thing applies to any of the other qualification questions. For example, if the job required the ability to lift a certain weight and you answered that you were unable to lift that weight, it might disqualify your submission. If possible, I would review your submission and see if you answered anything incorrectly. Otherwise, I'd try to resubmit and see what happens. Hopefully it works out for you. If you get the job, I expect some Santiago's hot green chile tacos in the mail as payment for my sage advice.

By any chance was the position located in a state that you are not a resident of? If the position requires residency in a certain state, Texas for example, and you answer that you are not a resident of Texas, your application is automatically closed.

All the great things you've heard about Southwest are true and you were smart to take the chance to become a member of the Southwest family. The hiring process differs from position to position but almost always starts out with a phone interview. If you impress the phone interviewer, you'll be invited for a face-to-face interview, most likely at the airport, for ramp agent and appearance technician positions. Southwest is a unique airline and is looking for unique People to join the company. Therefore, you'll need to convince the recruiters who interview you that you have the Southwest Spirit...a Warrior Spirit, a Servant's Heart, and a Fun Luv-ing Attitude. I suggest learning what each of these qualities mean and self-reflecting on how each of them applies to you. And remember, getting a job at Southwest is a highly-competitive process. If you don't make it this time, keep trying until you finally do! I can't speak about the training process at Southwest since I've never been through it, but I understand that it involves two weeks of classroom training in Dallas and then a few weeks of on-the-job training at whichever airport you are hired at. Good luck to you!

The chances are very good that Southwest will check your driving record as part of their thorough background check. This is pretty standard for all airlines. I cannot say specifically what Southwest is looking for, but my experience with other airlines is they are looking for excessive violations that may reflect on your ability to safely drive around the airport ramp. One or two violations within the last 5 years should not be a problem as long as they didn't involve driving under the influence. It is imperative that you list ALL driving violations on your application. If you leave anything off and Southwest finds out about it, it's grounds for termination.

Perhaps the solution to the alleged preboard cheating is to have a new boarding group made up of high-stress passengers. If a passenger can provide written proof from their doctor that allowing any other passenger to board before them will raise their blood pressure and pulse rate to dangerous levels, they will be allowed to board first. Southwest could call this group the "Type-A" Listers. All kidding aside, in 47 years of service, Southwest has never had assigned seating and has always allowed preboarders. Of those 47 years, they've been profitable for all but the first three. Southwest is not going to change a business model that has worked so well for so long just because some passengers are disturbed by a few passengers breaking the rules (and honestly, it is only a few). The last two times I've flown Southwest I had A-46 and A-21 respectively. Both of those flights had preboarders but I didn't notice how many because I didn't pay attention. At no time did the number of preboarders, legitimate or not, stress me. On both flights, I still got a seat that I wanted and, more importantly, safely reached the destination that I had purchased my ticket for. Life is short people. If you just can't stomach the idea of somebody possibly cheating the system, then fly one of the airlines with assigned seats so that you will have less stress. I've found that those other airlines find different ways to stress you out.

The short answer to your question is "NO." As a place to work, the other airlines don't compare to Southwest. However, there's nothing wrong with getting your foot in the door at another airline to gain some experience. Just remember, airline jobs are ruled by seniority so the longer you stay at another airline, the more seniority you have to give up if you leave and go to work for Southwest. If you stay at another airline too long, you may find that the seniority and pay you have to give up to join Southwest aren't worth the move. As the other majors go, Delta is probably the best airline for pay and benefits. Delta rampers start out just under $15/hour and top out at over $30/hour in roughly ten years. Seasonal and part-time rampers don't get medical insurance but do get a matching 401(k) which is rare for a part-time job. Going from part-time to full-time status depends on which station you are at. Delta has a pretty large operation at LAX so it may not take long to get enough seniority for a full-time line. Also, Delta's ramp is non-union which may be a good or a bad thing depending on your personal views. I'm not certain, but I believe that you must complete a six-month probationary period with Delta before you are eligible for OT and doubles. I would avoid working for a "regional" carrier at all costs. The pay is terrible and there tends to be a lot of friction and condescension from the employees at the mainline carrier that the regional is flying for.

It's all about supply and demand. Lots of people are flying since it's the summer travel season and if you don't book months ahead, it's hard to find cheap air fares. Leaving Mon. Jun 25th and returning Fri. Jun. 29th, basic economy roundtrip fares between Chicago (ORD) and Greenville/Spartanburg (GSP) are: United: $522 Delta: $539.10 American: $522 So, $274 one-way on Southwest is about right.

Southwest is very competitive in their hiring and it is natural to be excited about any opportunity to work for this great company. However, Southwest receives so many applications for every position that's it's unlikely that a phone number or e-mail address would be given out to applicants. The People Department would be overwhelmed by calls and e-mails and could not do their job of selecting the best candidates. If you are fortunate enough to be selected for a phone interview, that would be your first chance to "stand out." Learn all you can about the company, its history, and, most important, the "Southwest Spirit." If you impress during the phone interview, you will be invited to a face-to-face interview. If the interview is at the airport, meet as many Southwest People as you can. That way, if you aren't selected for this position, you will hopefully stand out for other positions that may come open. In all honesty, the ramp is the best job at the airport, especially in L.A. You get paid for getting tan and fit! Good luck to you!

First of all, let me say that CID is great! I have many fond memories of traveling through the airport with my toddler son on the way to visit our friends in Marion and Alburnett. He was especially fond of the Herky the Hawkeye statue that used to sit in the terminal. And with the Grant Wood Museum in Cedar Rapids, the University of Iowa, the beautiful fall foliage along the Cedar River, and Rockwell Collins, it is certainly a great place to visit. However, Southwest's business model requires a large number of local origin and destination ("O&D") passengers in order to provide frequent service with 737 aircraft. Unfortunately, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City just don't have the population to support frequent 737 flights. This is why the other major airlines at CID have switched from "mainline" aircraft like 737s to smaller regional jets. While Allegiant does provide service to CID with Airbus aircraft, their service is infrequent. I would love to be proved wrong but I just don't see Southwest serving CID anytime soon. If they did, I'd be on one of the first flights there. BTW, that toddler who was fond of the Herky the Hawkeye statue? He wants to be a Cyclone now. Go figure.

@Gus63 wrote: Either I am extremely unlikely or Southwest Airlines can’t maintain a schedule Given that the U.S. airlines had an on-time arrival rate of 80.9% in March 2018 (the last month reported by the Department of Transportation: https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/dot3718) and Southwest's on-time rate in March was 80.88%, I'd say that you are extremely unlucky. Southwest wasn't even in the bottom three airlines for delays in March (those would be JetBlue, Virgin America, and PSA Airlines). Of course, Southwest wasn't in the top three either so they certainly have something to work toward improving. I know those delays you've experienced lately are frustrating, but they certainly aren't typical of Southwest. Give those other airlines a try if you'd like but I suspect you won't receive the same great service that Southwest gives its Customers...at least that's been my experience.

I'm sorry about the poor experience that you had on your flight. The flight attendant complaining within earshot of the Customers was certainly unprofessional and definitely not indicative of Southwest flight attendants in general. The Southwest Community exists as a place for Customer-to-Customer interactions. I suggest that you contact Southwest Airlines Customer Relations with your complaint at 855-234-4654 or email them by clicking on the Contact Us link at the bottom of the Southwest homepage. Once again, sorry about your bad experience on Southwest. I fly on many of those "different choices" myself and have always found Southwest to be consistently the best.

Congratulations on making it to the face-to-face interview! Assuming that the interviews in Phoenix are conducted the same way as they were in Chicago, you and your fellow candidates will be taken to a "hospitality room" and greeted by a number of Southwest People who can answer your questions about the position and the company. Interact with the Southwest People and your fellow candidates as much as possible. Be prepared to have your picture taken in front of a Southwest banner with silly props! Part of the Southwest Spirit is a "Fun Luv-ing Attitude" and this is where you can show that you have it. When it's time to interview, a recruiter will come to the hospitality room, greet you, and take you to the inteview room. Southwest wants People who have the Southwest Spirit...a Warrior Spirit, a Servant's Heart, and a Fun Luv-ing Attitude...and the interview questions emphasize these qualities. There will likely be two interviewers in the room, the recruiter and a supervisor or manager from the call center. Good luck to you!

I completed a trip to Dallas and back with a cat last week and except for the permanent scars I will have from trying to put her into the pet carrier against her will, and one accident on the way home ("sir, something is leaking out of your bag"), it didn't go too badly. I highly recommend getting some sort of spray or collar with phermones to calm your cat. Feliway makes a spray that is available from veternarians. www.feliway.com/us#redirected There are also calming collars available at Petco that are non-toxic and smell like lavender. When you arrive at the ticket counter, you will pay the $95 pet fee and the agent will tag your pet carrier for your flight. At security you will need to remove the cat from his carrier and carry him through the metal detector. The TSA agents swabbed my hands for explosives afterward so be prepared for that. Once through security, the hardest part is getting the cat back into the carrier. Once you've accomplished that you simply walk to the gate and line up when the flight is ready to board. My cat meowed occasionally inside the airport but remained calm on the aircraft. I didn't have any problems with other passengers having pet allergies. Good luck on your move!
