This is a long term problem. Nationwide!
So as you said this is a LONG TERM problem a new CEO tomorrow or next week won’t change a thing. Problems like this don’t just fix themselves overnight. You could go and buy a technology update sure but you have to make sure it works before rollout or you could have a bigger issue. Also things actually have to be voted on it’s not a one man show and you don’t just buy the first thing you see in the technology world. Go look up other airline technology failures or other company technology update failures there have been several (bad files, bad updates, weather knocking a system offline)
here’s what I do know in other airline meltdowns none of them covered all reasonable expenses or gave out 25K miles to all affected automatically (they might have given out compensation only if someone contacted the airline and you may get different than the person next to you who had the same experience)

@tenaciouss I've booked over 100 rooms through the SWA hotel (booking.com) process and have to say only once did I have any issue. That once was my fault for not seeing no cancelation, however, I still got it cancelled by going through the process of contacting booking.com and working with the hotel. In the end, it's up to the hotel to force you to keep the room, or courteously cancel it. With all that said, I know that it's often cheaper by direct contact with the hotel, but you get no SWA points. I've had a companion pass for the past 6 years primarily due to the fact I use the SWA link to bookings and get on some stays up to 8,000 SWA points. Getting something, I need any way, a hotel room, and paying a bit more than rack price that helps me get companion, Priceless. To end this, no I've not had any issues with SWA and booking.com on any of the hundreds of bookings I've made.

SW should be soon coming up with a straw replacement plan. After all, this is a way more important issue than upgrading old systems to prevent another travel meltdown.
In the meantime, for those who can't get through their day because someone may be using a plastic straw, suggest asking SW for the reusable straws that are available.

Air travel has risks, any airline can and has had an occasional meltdown, pick your poison or pick your pleasure. I was impacted, and made adjustments, no worries. If it was life or death I would have booked another carrier, chartered part 135, or flown my own plane. It wasn't, thankfully. Still, Southwest came through rebooking my flights at no charge, extending my companion pass so that I could renew it with points in January, and unexpectedly gave me 50,000 points for my canceled flights. Southwest is not perfect, none of them are, but they're one of the safest airlines, they meet my use case, and they take care of their customers under adversity. I thank Southwest for that and will continue to support them, including two new trips I just booked. Anyone truly not happy with Southwest can book an alternative; but me, I'm staying with them.
PS - I'm neither a shill nor Southwest employee, just a regular customer who's flown millions of miles across the globe with all carriers and by myself.

Have you gone to the BWI SW Cargo Bldg. for the bags? The SW attendants were having a party yesterday but, they did manage to pull our bags. Maybe they are back to business today. I would not rely on SW to call you. We never received a call. This should be a good # for SW BWI cargo: 410 981-1410.

AKA none, but he has all of solutions to Southwest's problems. I can't even begin to count the number of people who told me not so politely to stay quiet as I had not been impacted. I was impacted, experienced the impact, saw what Southwest was doing, and went through the process of trying to get reimbursed for expenses so I have no problem offering an educated take on the events.

SW cancelled my flight from Las Vegas to Bellingham, Wa on Dec 24 and transferred me to a flight to Seattle the next day. I asked for my checked baggage as I was to cross the US border to go to Vancouver, BC. I was denied my bag despite repeated requests. I was told to collect the same from the initially tagged destination (Bellingham, Wa) . I hired a taxi from Seattle to BLI to pick my bag but I was told that the same has been sent to Seattle ! I again hired a RT taxi to Seattle airport to be told that my luggage was still at Las Vegas ! I incurred more that $900 on just searching for my luggage ! It's been 8 days to day and No communication from Southwest. I filed an Online report but was not given any Baggage report ID. I am in the dark as Southwest has already ruined my 2 weeks vacation and without my winter clothes and other stuff. Do not know as what to do as being a 72 years old Sr citizen cannot afford to travel from Vancouver, Canada to BLI, US and back without my baggage confirmation. Will appreciate if someone help.

I hope they care enough to fix their internal problems. They were good for a long time but SW really dropped the ball this time.
We became addicted to booking SW because of the opportunity to get a non stop flight to our destinations. Other carriers didn't seem to offer the large number of non stop flights that SW offered. Will we look at other carriers again? Yes, but those non stop flights are nice.
Half of the country just voted to continue with record high high inflation, recession and a tanking stock market so people don't always make the best decisions for themselves.

Lol and look at the rates? After SW destroyed peoples holidays you’d think they’d have favorable prices??? Nope! SW now looking to take advantage of customers again with ridiculous fares. This also caused other airlines rates to skyrocket because of all the SW customers booking with other airlines who are more reliable. All of their flights now are booked with SW customers who no longer trust the liars at SW

Oh, I think the Feds are going to come down hard enough on Southwest for this occurrence that the company will have no choice but to fix the tech infrastructure behind it. The problem for the consumer is going to be that we'll end up paying for the fix through higher fares in 2023. I like Southwest. They've never done me wrong, so I'll keep flying with them. This is the first bad experience I've had with them and they're still the most convenient option out of my home airport for the destinations I typically travel to.

We actually went down to BWI and after a long wait in line, received a Lost/Delayed Baggage Receipt. SW states that our luggage will be shipped to our home via FEDEX. I know it might be a PITA, but it might be advantageous to go back to the airport and wait in line at SW's Baggage Service Desk.

Update: We went back to BWI today to scavenge for our luggage. Piles of bags but our luggage not in those piles. We then waited in a long line to file missing bags reports and received a Lost/Delayed Baggage Receipt. Apparently our luggage never made it on the plane (we were told the night of the cancellation that the bags were on the plane and could not be retrieved) so not sure why we could not get the bags that night.
We finally made it through the slowest moving line. SW employees standing around and joking. Not too serious despite the company just having a meltdown. It looked like SW had Flight Attendants trying to operate the terminals but that wasn't going well. Our luggage was in the cargo hold and nobody could access that area to retrieve the luggage. So they gave us a receipt and stated that the luggage will be shipped to us via FEDEX. No estimate of when that will be.
Saw a number of media outlets interviewing people and filming the chaos. Certainly not good publicity for SW

An historic event and an epic Corporate failure. Something that will be written about and diagnosed in business journals for some time. Hopefully, SW leadership has the fortitude to enable a "lessons learned" and implement the required corrective actions.
I suspect, like many major companies today, they have been distracted from their core mission and have involved themselves in unnecessary debates, politics and trying to appease others (think Disney for example) while losing sight of why they are in the airline business and that is: To get people from one place to another in the most efficient and cost effective manner with the highest standards of customer service.

See my post “not all SW fault”
not summarize, yes new staff technology was due in 2020 and the post Covid financial picture did not allow investment in 2022 but was slated for 2023. Yes SW should not have offered as many holiday routes knowing their staffing was not sufficient to handle an emergency like this.
and finally, I totally believe that if your claim is submitted respectfully noting these non weather related failures on their part that everyone will be reimbursed.
as mad as I am I’m not giving up on this very good airline. It will take time and money for them to figure out this crisis and then right everyone’s claims.

(so that's progress)
but, our original flight number - apparently that flight from BWI-Albany either
a. Keeps getting cancelled
b. Does not fly every day of the week!
Don't know if SW would put the luggage on alternative BWI->ALB flight.
Can't get people on the phone
We are 3 hours away from Albany...
I intend to get back to Roch, but SW keeps cancelling flights to Roch, so there's no guarantee that they have staff at the counter nor baggage claim
