The idea of putting the disabled at the back is not a good solution. The flight attendants usually sit in the front. If you put a handicapped person in the back and there is an emergency to exit the aircraft the flight attendants are around at the front to help them off. If they are in the back it may spell disaster.. Putting restrictions as to where they can sit is put in place. (No exit rows). Some people may be taking advantage of the pre boarding rule I agree but in my experiance (and I do fly a lot) I do not see that many taking advantage. I even have friends who can claim a "Medical" issue and they prefer boarding with the normal group because they do not want to be "pointed at".

@kendrick If you have some flexibility in your travel dates, check out the low fare calendar for dates that have lower fares. Southwest is very competitive in their hiring and it is natural to be excited about any opportunity to work for this great company. However, Southwest receives so many applications for every position that's it's unlikely that a phone number or e-mail address would be given out to applicants. The People Department would be overwhelmed by calls and e-mails and could not do their job of selecting the best candidates. If you are fortunate enough to be selected for a phone interview, that would be your first chance to "stand out." Learn all you can about the company, its history, and, most important, the "Southwest Spirit." If you impress during the phone interview, you will be invited to a face-to-face interview. If the interview is at the airport, meet as many Southwest People as you can. That way, if you aren't selected for this position, you will hopefully stand out for other positions that may come open. In all honesty, the ramp is the best job at the airport, especially in L.A. You get paid for getting tan and fit! Good luck to you!

I'm not sure if someone else has brought this up, if they have then let me second it, if they haven't then let me offer an alternate POV: I'm a disabled veteran with a cane and I'm flying Southwest for the first time in my whole life BECAUSE of their preboarding policy, and I'm willing to bet a lot of others are too. Now my cane is folding, and honestly I might fold up my cane and put it in my purse beffore I board because I don't want to inconvience people once on board. That said I still need to hold onto seats (something that's hard to do when dozens of others are getting seated) or keep a hand on the wall as I walk onto the plane, I might even need to stop because my knee locked up as it so often does and I don't want someone to run into me because I came to a sudden stop if/when that happens. Now chances are I'm probably won't fold up my cane because threads like this are a constant reminder that society expects my 32 year old self to LOOK disabled. Society glares at me when I pass them on the sidewalk with my cane on my good days and society watches me on the days when I'm barely hobbling along and wonders if I'm faking on my bad ones. When I mention that I'm former military everyone just goes "OHHHH You got injured" Well... No actually I just have a bad hip (and because of that a bad leg) and the military isn't exactly kind to any weakness in our bodies. The military (no matter what happened to you) basically fast forwards your body's wearing down far faster than your average civilian job, and mine was probably originally meant to start having issues at 40-something. I LOVE that Southwest isn't forcing me to pay even more than I already do for being disabled. I've already paid years of my life, my health, my marriage, and who I was as a person just to end up a disabled wreck who couldn't even function in society for the first teo years that I was out. Do some people abuse the system? Of course they do, someone ALWAYS abuses every system out there. But Southwest has chosen not to punish the rest of us as a result and I applaud them for that. You are not Southwest, and you are not judge jury and executioner of anyone who may or may not have a disability. Maybe you luck out and the person you call out as a fake is actually a fake and is embarassed enough to never try to scam the system again. But in my experience that never happens. If you actually do catch a scammer they'll likely just continue to keep up the act and you'll end up tossed out of the airport by secuity for harrassing the 'disabled' person cause scammers will use the system to their advantage here. If you catch someone with a legitimate disability then you're making their already difficult life that much worse. In my case I'd probably have a panic attack and shut down if you actually confronted me in public cause I also have severe anxiety and moderate PTSD. You basically need to ask yourself it that risk is worth it for you. Are you okay with adding additional suffering to someone who might already suffer more than you can possibly imagine on a daily basis? The thing to remember is that the preboarding is as much for your benefit as it is for those who are disabled. It keeps us out of your way with our gimpy selves while you all rush for your prefered seats. In fact most disabled people I know who fly Southwest actually don't even go for the better seats, they just go for anywhere that allows them to sit with their companion who may need to assist them. And if we do board alongside you we possibly can do things like lifting up luggage or walk without aid and we'll get them done to keep from holding you up, but often we're internally screaming in pain during or after doing those things. It's said over and over again but you can't possibly know everything a person is dealing with in their life. I'd rather let a few scammers slide than chance hurting those who are already hurting and don't deserve it.

From what I've seen, Southwest flight attendants do clean the cabin between flights. I've seen the same policy at other airlines and worked for an airline that required all traveling employees to help clean the cabin between flights. The process is far more efficient than having contract cleaners clean the plane.

When you apply online, you'll be asked whether or not you are a resident of whichever state the job is in. If you answer "NO", your application is automatically marked "closed/complete" once you submit it. So, based on my personal experience, you cannot apply for the position if you are not already a resident of the state.

Have you considered leaving from Philadelphia instead? From PHL, Southwest has at least four Saturday non-stops to Orlando in September. It may be worth the longer trip to the airport if it saves you the hassle of connecting.

I would check your Southwest Careers dashboard to make sure that your status for the job isn't showing "closed/complete." I've noticed in the past that if you answer "no" to the residency question, your submission is automatically closed. I honestly don't know how to reach out to HR to let them know that you're planning to move to Texas soon. I commend you for taking the high road and answering the question honestly. However, if you are absolutely certain that you're moving back to Texas and have already completed an apartment application, I don't see a reason why you could not answer "yes" to the residency question.

The radar shows thunderstorms around Baltimore and the FAA website (http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp) shows arrival and departure delays for BWI due to Weather/Thunderstorms. Also, most of the flights between Baltimore and Raleigh today have been delayed, including on Delta.

Even then, I don't find the reclined position to be much more comfortable than non-reclined. I have my laptop crunched (luckily not permanently damaged -- yet) multiple times by people who slam their seatback back with no warning. As much as I hate the latest Southwest seats (slimline, in Max and some 800s) at least they've limited the range of recline. (One silver lining at least.) 😉 I don't prefer reclining most times either, and happy to let the person behind me keep their airspace/trayspace. I can't remember the last time I reclined my seat and personally don't see a need for it. The difference between the fully upright and fully reclined position really isn't that noticeable to me. Now that tray tables are used primarily for laptops instead of Coke and peanuts, the airlines would be smart to reduce or eliminate recline all together. On the flip side, I'm a tall guy and when I fly Economy on other airlines, my knees are planted firmly against the seat in front of me thanks to the less-than-adequate seat pitch other airlines get away with. Whoever sits in front of me isn't able to recline whether they want to or not. That doesn't happen on Southwest, thankfully.

Without knowing the actual passenger numbers in the market, it's anybody's guess why Southwest is cutting flights. However, looking at the number of daily flights and aircraft flown in the market, it appears that there may be too much capacity and Southwest is simply reducing flights to better match demand. I looked at a few flights in October vs December and it appears that Delta is actually cutting their daily DEN-ATL flights from eight (on Mon. 10/8) to six (on Mon. 12/3). United is holding firm at four daily flights, but one of those flights is on a smaller regional jet and the other three flights are on either 737-800s or A319s, similar in number of seats to Southwest's 737s. So, even with three flights a day, Southwest is in line with United in terms of capacity. Delta, is actually reducing flights (I can't say whether they are reducing capacity because I didn't see what aircraft they were using).

Ultimately it comes down to "yield." How much is a given market like IND-DCA earning per seat and are there other markets where the aircraft used for IND-DCA could make more money. When I worked on the ramp at (unnamed luv-less airline), we always had a full load of transfer bags for Reno. So we were amazed when our airline dropped Reno as a destination. How can we drop a city when the flights there are always full??? I asked that question to the V.P. of Finance and his explanation was, "full flights don't always mean lots of revenue." He pointed out how despite the flights being full, the fares for Reno were some of the lowest of any market. "So why not raise the fares? The demand is obviously there since the flights are full." Wrong again. Whenever the fares to Reno were raised 10%, passenger bookings dropped by more than 10%. In other words, the majority of passengers traveling to Reno were very price sensitive and would only fly if the fare was low. It made more business sense to redeploy the aircraft to other markets which commanded higher airfares. I suspect that's the reason that Southwest stopped direct service between DCA-IND. And, given that DCA is a slot-restricted airport, Southwest has an incentive to make sure that their limited slots are used on only the most profitable markets to/from DCA.

Sorry to hear about your things being damaged. You can contact Southwest Customer Relations by calling 855-234-4654 or email them by clicking the "Contact Us" link on the bottom of the Southwest home page. Soaked bags are certainly not limited to Southwest. I've worked on the ramp for two different airlines and speak from experience when I tell you that most ramp agents try to ensure that your bags are taken care of. Unfortunately, during periods of heavy rain it is impossible to keep bags dry. Even if bags are left in a baggage cart, rain can get past the cart's curtain and soak the bags inside. And, in the event of lightning, ramp agents are directed to immediately stop what they are doing and seek shelter which means bags may sit on the belt loader or ground in the rain for extended periods of time. Once again, I am sorry for what happened to your bags and agree that it is frustrating. I hope you will continue to fly Southwest despite this experience.
