Per the travel credit extension guidelines, if you *cancel* a flight between March 1 and June 30, 2020, your resulting travel credit will be extended to June 30, 2021. Thank you! I'm curious if the price of air fare will increase since there will be so many people with air fare to use.

@cookie0404 That absolutely has to be a personal decision. One other thing to consider: some states and municipalities have restrictions where you would have to self-quarantine based on your travel. That is also worth looking into as well.

@bwallet wrote: The airlines got their hands spanked. To me, the most interesting think about the DOT statement was that the airlines could offer credit, but they could do so only have to clearly letting the passengers know that they have the option to receive a refund. It seems to me that the airlines are clearly still non-compliant in that regards. Agreed. I suspect carriers are playing fast-and-loose with the rules knowingly, under the assumption that any resultant DOT fines would still cost less than granting full refunds for everyone who qualifies. Strange times.

I received this message directly from Southwest: "It will take our Technology Teams a few weeks to make these changes to the expiration date of the funds, and we appreciate your patience while our Teams work quickly to make this happen. Until the update has gone through with technology, be sure to keep track of your confirmation number in the meantime." Hope that helps. Stay healthy and safe!

Hello, Try contacting Southwest privately via one of their social media channels like Facebook or Twitter. I have a DM going with them whenever I have issues and they are always quick to respond there. I did have a similar issue like the one you reported (but before the pandemic, this was back in November/December) and they were able to adjust my flight for me in minutes. Thanks! --Jessica

" Hi @anyonebutswa. Thank you all for coming here and sharing your concerns. I know everyone is hurting, and I'm so sorry if we've been letting you down throughout these unprecedented circumstances. While we are not making exceptions to refund nonrefundable fares canceled by our Customers, I urge you to contact Customer Relations to discuss your individual situations if Southwest canceled your reservation. It's important to note that our Customer Relations Department is a different Department than 1-800-I-FLY-SWA. While Customer Relations' phone lines are not open on weekends, they respond on Facebook and Twitter 24/7/365. Thank you. Nicole Community Manager Nicole, I called Customer Relations after speaking with customer service and was told in no way could i receive a refund. While i appreciate that we have been given until June of 2021 to use the $1800 we have in credits, I would prefer to have the cash back in my bank account. I asked to speak with a manager several times while speaking to the customer relations dept and was told I would have to leave them my phone number and they would call me back. It has been four hours and still have not received a call back from a manager. BTW, thanks for trying to help others.

Appreciate the replies. For an update, I just spoke to Southwest, there reply was they eliminated flights because of Covid 19. Obviously they changed the flights for that week to more reasonable rates this morning. Makes sense they were so high for a short time so customers weren’t booking.

Regardless of how many chemicals are pumped onto a plane, gunk on a try table only comes off by wiping it off. While there may be some ways to "fog," I don't see how they can avoid manual cleaning. More directly from SW here.

Hello, If you cancelled your flight after March 1, the travel funds should have an expiration date of June 30, 2021 - this change is not automatic in the system and it may take a little while for your funds to reflect the new expiration. https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Blog/Policy-Update-amp-Clarification-Extending-Travel-Credit/ba-p/103844 Thanks, --Jessica

To add, while you can use/play with the funds however you'd like, they usually expire after ONE YEAR. SWA has extended that for everyone until June 30, 2021. Learn more: https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Blog/Additional-Schedule-Modifications-through-April-14-2020/ba-p/104046

@Biancanoel177 wrote: Kind of a general question, I know. But I just wanted some opinions from people who have also had to cancel their flights and have to reschedule Your personal habits have a lot to do with the safety. Diligence with handwashing, disinfectant, not touching your face, all have a huge impact. The airplane itself has many features to provide filtered clean air. There is some chance to have contact with infected individuals on the plane, in the airport, or any other activity you do out of your own space so as @chgoflyer mentioned social distancing is recommended for all activities, not just air travel. If I did need to fly I would, and I’d be taking the same extended precautions as when I eventually have to restock food and household supplies.

Hold off, especially if you just booked your flight. If it gets closer to that time and there are any flight restrictions or cancellations, Southwest may cancel your flight which would in turn give you a refund. In addition, if you decide to cancel yourself, the money you spent on your flight can be used towards future travel for a year, so if you booked last month you would have until February 2021 to book a flight with those funds. --Jessica

I have a flight booked for April to the Dominican that l haven’t canceled. I have no plans on traveling there anyway hotel closed for a month. If l cancel or change flights l only have to May 29 2020 to use my travel funds. I will lose over $1000 for using a $20 voucher for a price drop last May that was sitting in my account. I booked my vacation last October therefore l cannot use that date for my end but now l am stuck with May 2020. I have received the email today telling me nothing can be done unless l can reschedule for May that is not happening.

You waited 10 months to use your funds, and then cancelled a flight (arguably) before the full impact of this virus had hit. Seems like SW is being reasonable with their rules. You want them to retroactively change them? Although, I do commiserate with the new money you added being "tainted" by the expiration of the travel funds. That is an unfortunate side effect of their otherwise quite generous policy, to which there doesn't seem to be a simple solution that is more equitable that would also not be abused. All things considered, I'd wait until they expire, call up and see what you can get. Maybe it's $200, but maybe it'll be less. I figure more likely they'll extend the expiration time to 12 months. We can hope. Good luck. In the big scheme of things, it could be a lot worse than $200.

It doesn't matter to me that this has always been "Southwest's Policy". I think it's ridiculous that no matter what amount of travel funds you apply to a reservation, when you cancel, the entire amount is subject to the expiration of the travel funds. Example: My family of 4 each have $25 of travel funds that expire on January 1st. On December 1st, I book a flight for 4 that departs on December 25th. The flight will cost me $600. I pay $100 of the reservation with travel funds and the other $500 with cash (credit, debit, whatever). On December 28th, I find out that we are no longer able to fly and I cancel my flight and receive travel funds for future flights in the amount of $600 ($150 each). These new travel funds now expire on January 1st leaving me 3 days to use. I am then told that I "may" be able to extend the expiration date of travel funds if they are over $100 each, which they are. BUT.....there will be a penalty of $100 per ticket to extend it for 6 months. So now, I am in possession of $50 of travel funds for each of my family of 4. I paid out of pocket for the original $100 of travel funds and I paid out of pocket for the $500 but now I'm left with only $200 of travel funds. I agree, this is a very unique policy!

Another vote for not canceling yet, wait until May if the flight hasn't already been canceled by Southwest. The only reason not to wait would be if you were going to book another flight for later in the year anyway and didn't want to tie up more cash. --TheMiddleSeat

I'm all ears I am a customer just like most everyone else here. I'm not defending the policy just stating it. If I was in charge of the airline there may be a couple things I'd do differently but since I don't work for Southwest and im not in charge all I can do is share my feedback with the airline. That's why I suggested you contract southwest so maybe they can assist you on a case by case basis. -Blake

As of this moment, they are not.
