Sorry to hear this is happening to you.
The problem is you have tens of thousands of people like you that need to get on planes to get somewhere, BUT those planes that will fly are already full of booked holiday travelers. Huge problem.
Southwest can't just snap it's fingers and create new planes and/or new crews. Given all of the above, that means that some people will likely experience lengthy delays in getting to where they want to go.
I have to admit a 5 day delay seems pretty extreme.
People cancel/change flights all the time. That opens seats all the time. Keep checking Southwest.com to see if anything sooner opens up. Some seats will become available. If that happens SW lets you do a no cost switch to snag that seat.
Check frequently as there are lots of people like you that will be looking. Seats that do open up will likely not be available for long.
Good luck.

I think thru Sunday it probably was primarily weather related. there were 15,000+ North American flights cancelled across all airlines from .Wed thru Sun
Today seems to be a different beast. Southwest does not seem capable of getting it's act together.
I think recovery is easier for airlines like United, Delta and American. Their planes fly from hubs to spokes and then back to hubs. So it would be easier to get equipment and crews where they need to be for continuing operations than it would be for Southwest.
Southwest flies point to point, so when things headed south and cancellations cascaded Southwest was left with crews and planes in lots of different places that needed to get back to lots of different places - and Southwest was not up to the task. At least that's my opinion

Points that you earned in 2022 will count towards 2022 CP regardless of when they post.
Of course if you need them to qualify and they post on 2/15 then you won't have access to your CP until 2/15
Ways to get points: hotel stays where you check out by YE, rent cars where the car is returned by YE, SW shopping, SW Dining, I guess things 1-800-flowers.
Just be sure the transaction is completed in 2022

Our flight was cancelled yesterday - BNA to LGA. They booked us on a flight for tonight. It is not looking good---seems SW is having a problem with nonstop flts to LGA---showing cancelled and/or delayed for most flights so far today. Question--yesterday we were at the airport waiting and received a Lov Voucher for @300.
If today's flight is cancelled, do we get another voucher?
There is no way to know. Different employees may handle it in different ways
Do we have "be present" to get it??? Thanks for all info!
I'd say normally , yes., but Lot's of people complain directly to SW and get vouchers though., To do so click on "contact us" below and proceed.

Weather can affect your plane at more than just YOUR destination and departure airports.
Southwest flies a lot of point to point flights.
So, for example, if you are flying From Chicago to Orlando, but the plane that day is flying from Las Vegas to Denver to Dallas to Chicago to Orlando, then weather at any of the cities your plane visits before it gets to Chicago could be a problem.

It's a mess out there. It is likely that every airport has lines that are hours long - Syracuse, too.
1) Southwest likely rebooked you on to another flight. remember to cancel that one so you can get a refund.
2) Given what is going on, I suspect that no method of reaching the airline will be timely.
I guess I'd suggest e-mail or social media. Click on "contact us" below to get to e-mail and scroll to the bottom right of the page to the words "connect with us" to get twitter or facebook links.
good luck

No you are not the only one - you and tens of thousands+ of others.

Yup, Southwest is melting down and it is pretty disgusting.
Put yourself in the shoes of those employees, though. They are being beaten on by really unhappy passengers hour after hour after hour - and now day after day after day.

Sorry to hear of your son's trouble.
With almost 15,000 flights cancelled since last Wednesday, all airlines are giving passengers terrible holiday memories. The only thing you can try to do, and it is very difficult, is to be patient until this thing unwinds,
Hope it works out.

Sorry to hear this is happening to you.
Unfortunately, t's happening to passengers on all airlines, Over 13,000 flights were cancelled between Wednesday and Sunday - that's over 1,500,000 passengers, and CNN is reporting a minimum of another 1300 flights cancelled today.
Combine trying to rebook over 1,500,000 passengers on any planes actually flying that were, due to the holiday, probably already fully booked, and you have disaster. - on all airlines.

sorry to hear this is happening to your son.
Airlines hate to cancel flights. The process alienates passengers, makes a mess of airline operations and costs the airline lots of money.
That means that airlines keep delaying flights with the hope that they eventually get out. Sometimes they delay and delay and delay and then finally give up and cancel when it finally becomes obvious the flight has no chance of getting out. That is apparently what happened in your son's case. It's happened to me more than once and it is maddening as hell. I've slept in airports more than once because of this.
1) Verify that Southwest rebooked your son. If so, and your son is not going to take the flight, cancel the thing and request a refund. Alternatively, Southwest will allow a no cost change to any other flight with seat availability between the same two cities. Since people cancel flights all the time, seats might be available now that were not available 10 minutes ago.
2) Complain directly to the airline. Use the contact us link below to begin that process. You are likely to get a travel voucher good for future travel $100 or $200.

To clarify what themiddlseat said
The default position for all airlines in these situations is that airlines offer a credit. You then have to tell the airline you do not want a credit, you want a refund --- and you will get one.

Actually, a computer automatically rebooks people on to the next available flights with available seats. It happens without the intervention of a person. Using confirmation numbers passengers can see their new flights via the app or via southwest.com. RR members will be able to see the new flights upon logging in to the website..
Also don;t assume that if the new flight is less than 24 hours out, that you will automatically be assigned a boarding position concurrent with the rebook. That does not always happen

Sorry to hear you ran into trouble.
First of all, there are non phone and non app ways to reach the airline, when thousands of people are trying to reach the airline, using twitter or facebook are far less stressful ways of proceeding.

Second, the best you are going to get from any airline in this type of situation is some type of voucher - the value will vary between airlines, but no airline will give you a free roundtrip - not even for getting bumped - money yes, free roundtrip, no.
Third, why on earth stick your meds in a checked bag? They get lost, they are late. ALWAYS puts things YOU REALLY NEED (like meds) in your carry on.
Fourth, no airline voluntarily OFFERS refunds, even though people are due them You have to tell the airline you WANT a refund, and you will get one.

I was speculating on one possible reason the situation could have occurred. There are others.
Anyway they were likely booked on a 737 - Max8 which seats 175 people. It is possible the airline planned on sending the plane out weight restricted and never sold all of the available seats., and then discovered a need to remove even more weight thus affecting your parents.
So your parents would have been in boarding position. 144 (60A+60B+24c). It seems extreme to me that they plane would go out weight restricted with 30 plus open seats, but I am not familiar enough with Southwest's Hawaii operations to know if that is likely..
Sorry I can't be more helpful
Sorry to hear that your parents and you have to endure this.
In the event of need to deny boarding, the Southwest rule is to ALWAYS pick the last people to check in.
SInce Southwest NEVER sells more seats than the plane holds (hasn't in 4-5 years), then the over book is due to something else. For example, if there were heavy winds that would have prevented a full plane from making the flight all the way to Hawaii, then SW would have had to get weight off the plane - fewer people and or less cargo. Lighter planes have more range than heavier planes. Thus people could have been bumped.
Also, check in time TIME ZONE of the city the plane will depart from needs to be taken into account. when checking in If the plane is leaving from from New York, then use eastern time zone - from Chicago - central time zone, etc.

As has been said here many times, there is a hole in the "companions board with ticket holder" process. It works for Wanna Get way, Wanna Get Away+ and Anytime ticket holders BUT NOT FOR BUSINESS SELECT ticket holders.
Spaces A1-A15 are only available for ticket BUYERS thus there is no way to accommodate companions with adjacent boarding positions..
Next time buy one of the other fare types and your companion will have a space right next to yours - assigned 36 hours before flight time.
