Hi, Were you at 100,000 with the Boost or prior to the Boost? Southwest gave a 25,000 point boost so if you had 100k before the boost you would now already qualify for the Companion Pass. If you convert the Travel funds to points you would not get any miles for those being used. If you did not if you booked a "Wanna Get Away Fare" you would get about 1,200 to 1,400 points total for the $250 in depending on the route you take. You can earn double points now through August 31st, though the bonus points do not count towards Companion Pass. I am guessing you earned a majority of points through the Rapids Rewards credit card. You can also keep spending on that to earn more points towards Companion Pass too.

Will the bonus points earned from this count towards A List Status? It doesn’t say that it excludes them from counting in the terms listed on the promotion.

You could always fly on Sunday. I have bad news and I have good news. The bad news is you may not get that option. The good news is it may be a scheduling error/IT error. After throughly reviewing the schedule I found a potential issue. There are 0 available flights outbound from ECP TO ANYWHERE on those 2 days. I’ve checked 2 dozen cities that flights go to regularly from ECP and they fly every day except those two. At first I thought maybe it was an airport closure for those days, but then I see inbound flights on those days so that can’t be it.

Can I ask the actual cities? I've looked at the schedule as I also have travel from CA to Texas in early August but still see several nonstop flights. If Southwest ever changes your flight they always give you the option online to change your flight to one that better accommodates your schedule for free. I am seeing all over LA and San Diego to El Paso, Dallas and Houston nonstop. Haven't checked other cities but those all have nonstop in July/August from what I looked at just now. So if they changed you from nonstop to 1 or 2 stops you can check the flights for that day and change it back to nonstop at a different time for free even if it was more expensive than your original flight.

Looks like SW just updated their travel advisory to cancel all routes from HOU to Mexico and Costa Rica. I noticed when going to check if my rates had dropped, only to see unavailable all flights. I went to check my flight, when I clicked it a pop up came up saying your flight was cancelled. Also, any flights to Costa Rica are completely cancelled and unavailable from any SW Airport even LAX or BWI all of them. This route is cancelled effective last night at midnight apparently. On top of that it was paid for with Travel Funds, but nothing was added to my RR account in terms of Travel Funds. Just letting everyone know to check your reservations if you had any of these routes. In June/July they could very well change and go back to these routes with increased prices.

Yeah, since MDW is a hub city you have many more direct options that there are available from MSP. Flying from MSP we need to stop somewhere to get to most major cities like MCO, LGA, LAX, even LAS.

I guess I’m not understanding what multi-billion dollar business wouldn’t consider the fact of stopping in city C, D, or E. Looking at the schedule in March (when more flights were available) I could route MSP to LAX for 3,120 points for most flights through August. The flights were routed through Oakland, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Chicago, and Dallas. I guess I’m saying that one could fairly easily just jump off at those cities and stay if they were higher priced. And according to the above poster it’s not even frowned upon by SW as long as you don’t have any checked baggage. So with that into consideration the stopover city should be of some consideration. But hey whatever works for Southwest. I may just jump off one day and stay in the middle city, maybe. Good to know I have the option.

Ah, I think you’ve misunderstood my post. I was just trying to figure out why airlines, Southwest in this case, would make a system that makes the middle city more expensive than the destination city. You’d think the end city would always be most expensive. I guess in that way you could game the system, but hard to get back to your origin city since you’ve gotten off at the expensive city. I’ve read about how some people get off halfway and just stay as long as they have no checked luggage, only using a carry on. I think I’ve even heard an airline sued someone in court because of doing it as well on an international flight.

Why is it in many cases that prices to end your flight in a stopover city tend to more expensive that stopping over then continuing on? Example - MSP -> OAK -> ONT this is cheaper than MSP -> OAK. I've noticed this pretty steadily over the last couple years on several flights. Not newly related to covid-19 policies, but still happening. I guess I don't understand how/why it'd be cheaper to continue on to another airport compared to just ending the trip at the stopover airport.

As far as the A-List Boarding position we have a toddler with us so we board with family boarding which is about the same time as A-List boarding. Also, a Companion can’t board at the same time as an A-lister which doesn’t make much sense if they allow others on the same reservation to board. Then the standby benefit wouldn’t apply either as we always fly with 2-3 people. So the only benefits I can truly look at are the 25% bonus and the phone line.

From what I am seeing other $49 flights are 3,000 points, whereas this one is 2,700 points. The point difference is happening because the 2,700 point flight is going from Airport 1 to Airport 2 then to Airport 3 resulting in (2) $4.50 Passenger Facility Charges totaling $9. While the 3,000 flight is only going from Airport 1 to Airport 2. Which on Points bookings the points cover those fees. The difference is 600 points per Roundtrip flight x 4 Roundtrip flights = 2,400 points. Just to get that back in the 25% A-List Bonus you’d have to earn 10,000 points.

So I have a route I’ll be making 3-4 Roundtrip Flights this year. I like the concept of A-List, but I have TSA pre-check already so not sure how good it’d be for me exactly. Anyway here’s where I’m torn and I’d like some input - I could fly my route for $49 Cash Each Way or 2,700 points each way. So basically $98 or 5,400 points plus $11.20. Even if you subtract the $11.20 you’re getting a 1.5 cent per point valuation which is amazing. Paying the Cash Rate I would earn 2 Flight Credits toward A-List and 400 points if I’m not mistaken. I would be flying with a Companion this year and next year so they wouldn’t earn A-List status though which the Standby Benefit not sure if that’d work with a Companion. The 25% Bonus is okay, but since I usually earn less than 5,000 points per year through flights not a big bonus for me.

“There’s one airline that has figured out a way to use all of these rules to benefit its customers. JetBlue will allow you to drink your own alcohol on board, as long as you present it to them first so they can serve it to you, thereby adhering to FAA regulations.” “It’s always possible you’ll have a flight crew that doesn’t care if you want to drink your own alcohol. On TPG’s recent Egypt Air flight from New York (JFK) to Cairo, Egypt (CAI), he and his father asked a flight attendant if it was okay to drink beers they had brought along — her response was “I couldn’t care less. Do what you want.” So as with all things in travel, your mileage may vary” The Points Guy (It’s not letting me post link). Which is why I asked Southwest’s specific policy regarding it, to which there is none and why I mentioned the TSA approved alcohol. My brother was just on a SW flight two weeks ago he brought (3) Travel Sized bottles of Rum and had no issue drinking them onboard.

You can add your companion within a day of qualifying, even though the physical card does not come for weeks. But if I were in their shoes I would book the extra person now for at least May, then after CP is received (you'll get an email notifying you) contact SW to remove them from reservation and add them as a Companion getting points paid for them refunded. Best Option

After reading that article my take is that Southwest is going to mandate employees to wear masks, not consumers. Additionally they are pushing to make it federal policy for the burden of health screenings to be done through TSA, not airlines. Which is fair enough TSA must have some medical person on hand at each airport. Southwest also noted they planned to lower ticket sales to only 2/3 capacity to essentially remove the middle seat. My thinking is IF airlines do require masks the airlines themselves should provide them to people who cannot get them or do not have one. I’ve been to my local Target, Walmart and CVS none of which have masks of any type in stock. To order online it’s about a month wait when I checked a day or so ago. But if it’s something they want to enforce they should be the ones to provide it. If they’re buying in bulk they could get them for what $0.10 each for basic ones? Hardly a burden for them.

And I’ve explained that already. Southwest has increased fares while making them appear the same to the general public. Meaning you are actually paying more than you normally would when redeeming points. There has been a loss in realized value of points as it now costs more points than before to book with Southwest.

The last sentence of what you said. Looks like Southwest got 2.3 Billion in Grants and another 1 Billion in low interest loans. Which is a major boost, on top of that cash on hand at the end of the last quarter was over 4 Billion Dollars. We wouldn’t just throw money to a business that’s going to die anyway. The airlines receiving money will survive through this otherwise it would’ve been spent in vain. Also, the rates offered in March are sustainable. If those rates were offered through October they’d be much better positioned to start getting back up. With many going to be budget conscious in the future Southwest won’t be their first option. I regularly find cheaper flights for my routes with other airlines like Sun Country even Delta Sometimes. I fly with SW because of free bags, but you can get that with others just with their Credit Card. Just saying they should garner loyalty. In your above post you said they’re charging the most they believe they can get away with. From my end the rates offered in March weren’t unbelievable they were great deals, but not mind blowing. And from now through October are crucial months for the travel industry as a whole.

“Your realized value per point has indeed dropped.” That, I feel is the most noticeable thing, at least for me. I always get the “Wanna Get Away” fares, and usually will go flexible on dates so I get the lowest possible rate. So a higher amount of points required for a booking is a drop in realized value. This drop in realized value, combined with the increase in actual fares isn’t a consumer friendly move it’s more beneficial towards Southwest. Which is my main point, it in no way benefits consumers.

I disagree and many commenters on the article posted numerous disagreements. So what you’re saying is that even though you’re getting less for your points it’s not a devaluation. That is literally the definition of a devaluation, whether temporary or permanent. Also, what you’re saying is that Southwest ticket prices should technically be less due to the taxes being cut, but Southwest has increased fares to make more money and is trying to make it seem like nothing has changed. Any way you slice it it’s a devaluation, along with that is increased fares. For example a flight advertised as $99 was previously really $85.40 (pre tax). Now since those taxes were removed it should be $85.40 + the $5.60 9/11 fee (not removed) meaning $91. But Southwest has instead increased fares by whatever the taxes would have normally been (In this case $8) so their prices remain the same.
