It is overrated to me because of the tray table situation as several have said. It just is not that practical.   I generally like the window or aisle seat in the exit row opposite 12A. You get more legroom but a functional tray table.  Now I might choose 12A over a regular row, but it isn't my first choice. I was doing touch and gos in Lubbock years ago. Including me, two Skyhawks  were doing touch and gos.   I had just turned on final and the tower cleared the other plane to land. I wasn't about to risk asking the tower whether it had made a mistake since if it wasn't a mistake, I was about to be run into by the other plane. That was not the time for talk. It was the time to fly the plane.   I made a sharp turn to the east, abandoning the pattern, and got on the radio to tell the tower what I was doing. The tower cleared me to the parallel runway.   The guy in the tower forgot who he was talking with. He forgot my tail number and used the wrong one while talking with me. ... View more

I get that getting A vs. B is a huge difference! I remember the days when EB practically guaranteed an A spot, but SW doesn't advertise it that way or guarantee it. Half the benefit is not having to remember to check in right at 24 hrs out.  I can't imagine the logistical challenge of having families identify themselves at booking. What if another family member were added after original booking? What if the booked date of when all the boarding positions had been released? What if there were such a large number of A Listers and EBs that there were not many seats together for families?   These days, getting a B spot is simply something you have to consider. If EB is still worth it for you at that point, go for it. If not, remember to check in right at 24 hrs out and hope for the best.  ... View more

But many of the changes that have happened to air travel since then frankly have nothing to do with that event, and are more a result of things like economic factors.    One minor comment -- not to beat a dead horse -- but just in case it's unclear, laptops can be used on the ground. That is one, no two, terrible experiences. I hope that you and your family receive a satisfactory compensation from SWA. That said, this is another great example of why, if you have specific seating needs, you shouldn't book a flight on an airline that doesn't allow you to reserve a specific seat. Same thing for families. Is SWA low costs worth the chance that you can't all sit together? SWA is, for me, almost always the least expensive and most convenient choice. But the price of that choice is knowing in advance that I could end up sitting in a middle seat in the last row of the plane between two larger fellow fliers. That's Southwest. ... View more
