Joe Gulick Lubbock Avalanche-Journal How can a big and heavy airplane - such as the 36-ton Boeing 737 airliners flown by Southwest Airlines - lift off the ground and fly? That's a question a lot of children wonder about at some point during their elementary school years. The fifth-graders at Maedgen Elementary know the answer is the forces of lift, thrust, drag and gravity. The Maedgen students learned that and many other aviation-related facts from Southwest Airlines pilot John Sims, who has been "adopted" by their school once again this spring. Sims is a former Maedgen Elementary student and one of about 750 Southwest pilots who participate in the airline's Adopt-A-Pilot program. to read more, visit: http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/051309/fea_439182169.shtml

i fly from nashville to new orleans alot. when i fisrt started this trip for work i had flight options with southwest. five flights a day from nashville to new orleans. now i have 3 choices. morning, noon, or early eve. what happened to the late flight? i mean i understand cut backs etc.... but when every flight is full, < three wide all the way back and on both sides> why not add the later flight. and it isnt just from nashville, its from houston hobby as well. we were packed in like peas in a pod. my last three flights ive made we the worst flights ive ever made. so much to the point im looking for a new airline. i hope my voice is heard on this, and to make things worse, the lady at the gate stated " i hate to work new orleans flights, they are allways over booked, and allways mad people" its truely sad in these times that a blog is the only way i can voice my problems. i cant even get a return phone call.

by Scott Laird It takes a certain type to deal with all the airline industry has to offer. After several years of wild items from passengers and crew alike, I know I’m nowhere close to having seen it all. But I thought I might take a moment and share a few bizarre, funny, and/or wacky items I have seen in my time in the skyways. Southwest Airlines and the International Association of Machinists (IAM) and Aerospace Workers District 142, representing the airline’s Customer Support and Services and airport Customer Service Employees announced today the two parties have reached a tentative agreement. The tentative agreement is for a new, four-year contract through October 31, 2012. The current contract became amendable on October 31, 2008. Southwest Airlines and the IAM began contract negotiations in August 2008. The Company is pleased with this tentative agreement that delivers wage and benefit increases in exchange for work rule improvements and scheduling flexibility along with productivity and gained efficiencies for Customer Support and Services Representatives in the airline’s call centers and for its airport Customer Service Agents. The Negotiation Teams struck this tentative agreement during challenging economic times. Today’s announcement demonstrates the IAM’S commitment to maintaining Southwest's competitiveness and overall financial strength as it weathers the current volatile economic environment. In the upcoming weeks, the IAM District 142 membership will be given the full details of the agreement and will have the opportunity to vote on ratification. IAM represents more than 5,300 Southwest Airlines Employees. Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV), the nation's largest carrier in terms of domestic passengers enplaned, currently serves 65 cities in 33 states. Based in Dallas , Southwest currently operates more than 3,300 flights a day and has more than 35,000 Employees systemwide.

Southwest Airlines Co. announced today that the Company flew 6.5 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in April 2009, a 4.1 percent increase from the 6.3 billion RPMs flown in April 2008. Available seat miles (ASMs) decreased 1.9 percent to 8.5 billion from the April 2008 level of 8.6 billion. The load factor for the month was 77.0 percent, compared to 72.6 percent for the same period last year. April 2009 passenger revenues per ASM are estimated to be in line with last year, as expected. However, current revenue and booking trends continue to be adversely impacted by the weak economic environment and now also by concerns over the recent H1N1 Swine Flu outbreak. Therefore, the Company currently expects the year-over-year decline in second quarter 2009 passenger revenues per ASM to exceed first quarter 2009’s decline of 2.8 percent. For the four months ended April 30, 2009, Southwest flew 23.4 billion RPMs, compared to the 23.9 billion RPMs recorded for the same period in 2008, a decrease of 1.9 percent. Available seat miles decreased 3.5 percent to 32.6 billion from the 2008 level of 33.8 billion. The year-to-date load factor was 71.7 percent, compared to 70.5 percent for the same period last year. This release, as well as past news releases on Southwest, are available online at southwest.com.

Ok post 9/11 you cannot form a line near the front of the plane, yet the changing tables are only in the front of the aircraft. I spent my last flight getting told to sit down and wait until the bathroom is free. If I'm sitting in the back of the plane I cannot get to the front before some other passenger beats me to it. Than I have to return to my seat yet again and hope I can lunge fast enough with my 6 month old in tow to the hopefully still available restroom. This is absurd and needs to be changed to the rear restroom so I don't break any TSA rules just trying to get my baby changed.

I fly SWA exclusively within the USA due to two things: 1. No checked bag fee (for 1st two) and 2. No change of schedule fees. The "no bag fee" is important to me, but not necessarily because of the fee. Actually, it's because of the "cabin rage" I've seen on carriers with the fee.
I fly PHL-SLC-PHL constantly. I used to use the "other carrier" but go sick and tired of the "steamer trunks" being hauled aboard "disguised" as backpacks. If you weren't in the first three or four "boarding zones", you faced the prospect of "gate checking" you bags. Not good. The breaking point occurred at Xmas one year when the "other carrier" allowed (4) folks to carry on guitars (each one filled an entire overhead bin). That was it. As Roberto Duran said, "No mas".
As for the "no change fee", the "other carrier" insisted on charging me and my wife $100/ea to change a flight due to an emergency operation my wife needed. The fact that my wife was in danger meant nothing to them. Now they mean nothing to me.

by Pingdom Last week we published a report about website uptime for airlines. We had monitored the uptime of 42 international airline websites during a period of four months. The results were quite surprising so we figured we would share some of our findings here as well. The full report is available as a free PDF, but below is a brief summary of the main points. to read more, visit: http://royal.pingdom.com/2009/04/27/62-percent-of-airline-websites-not-as-reliable-as-they-should-be/

I was on one of "David's flights" out of Phoenix a few months ago and can tell you that his rapping lightened the mood for all on the floor. There were several teachers who had been attending a convention who said they really enjoyed it. I found out by his rapping that we had 130 on the flight "so I know you can clap louder than that"!
Southwest is our only way to fly! My last flight had a comedeienne attendant so I will be watching for her on here next!

I have noticed the same thing with the "specials" and Ding fares. I have wanted to express myself for a while now. Even my friends, family and co-workers have communicated the same feelings to me, so this week; I sent an email to Southwest to let them know how disappointed I am. I use to use Southwest quite often for business and personal use; however, I have not seen a low fare from and to BWI for quite some time. I am planning a vacation to Orlando in August. I have found nothing on DING. Currently, Southwest is offering $64 going down (nice); however, coming back (on a Monday) the fare is $119 (except for a really early and late flight). Recently, I decided to shop around and I found that both Airtran and US Airways websites have cheaper round-trip fares than Southwest. Today, I did a search on Travelocity only to find that Northwest and Delta also have cheaper round-trip fares. The response I received from Southwest included the following: "When determining the different fares that we can offer to our Customers, our Revenue Management Department evaluates several factors (some of which are: historic load factors; peak and off-peak travel times; etc.). Based on the results of their study, they determine what fares we can offer at a discount while still maintaining a profitable flight." That is really unacceptable!!! In my opinion, since Southwest started flying out of BWI, service has picked up tremendously. The parking lot shuttle buses usually empty out at the Southwest stop. This should lower fares, not increase them. A couple of times I have driven up to PHL because the fares were cheaper, but I am tired of doing that. At the end of the month, I am taking Amtrak up to Massachusetts (Yes, even Amtrak was cheaper than Southwest this time around and I can work while I am on the train). When I fly in August, unfortunately another airline will probably get my business.

As a retail concession associate at OAK, and an Oakland resident, Volaris is more than welcome! The fares listed over the first two days on the airline from here to Toluca and Guadalajara are eye-catching! The only slight downside--depending on one's preferences--is that both departures from here (one to each city) are red-eye flights, leaving as late as the wee hours of the morning. Aside from that, Volaris will be an even greater addition--with our being a focus city for Southwest--once codeshare flight schedules are official. It will be interesting to find out how long we might/will be the only US airport with nonstop flights on Volaris to Guadalajara. (??)

I love your fares especially your military discounts!!! my only issue is while you are serving the troops with these great fares we always end up sitting in middle seats because we can't check in on-line. So by the time we get to the airport and have our IDs checked the majority of the plane has checked in on-line and we end up with a C boarding pass. I fly SWA atleast once a month on a military ticket (my husband is stationed in TX and I am in DC) and I have yet to get a seat that isn't a middle one. Please update your system to allow us to atleast reserve a seat like the other passengers within 24 hours of the flight. You could still require an ID check. For example, you could have us accomplish the first step of the boarding process but the document that generates could say, "ID CHECK REQUIRED AT TICKET COUNTER."
I really appreciate your nod to those of us that serve but if you really wanted to honor us allow us the same shot at a comfortable seat as everyone else on the flight.
Thank you!!

I haven't flown Southwest yet, but already I'm excited to get aboard this summer. Service just arrived in Minneapolis this spring and the low prices are awesome. My girlfriend is moving to Ohio and I know I'll be doing a lot of flying to visit her in the future. Just signed up for the Southwest College Rewards program too--hopefully more savings down the road on top of already low prices! Southwest moving into MN was a big deal this year--there was a lot of talk in the media about how this would shake up airline prices around here. Please keep adding destinations out of Minneapolis to other cities! I would one day love to fly directly from Minneapolis to Columbus, OH. I know NWA/Delta offers the route now. But I'll still be flying Southwest because of the Rewards Program and lower prices. Thanks for setting up shop in Minneapolis--a lot of people are excited!

I was just listening to an NPR piece about how SW may have to start charging baggage fees to cover losses. I hope not. I am a loyal SW business and pleasure customer, and I appreciate being able to check my bag without a fee. I wish more would do so. The biggest obstacle to SW's famed quick turnaround are passengers who insist on hauling multiple bags on-board, then delaying the boarding process while they search for overhead bin space. Why? In over a dozen years of flying, mostly on SW, I have NEVER lost a bag, and I can count on one hand the number of times my bag has been delayed. Keep up the good work.

True or False: What a company stands for — such as its mission and purpose, corporate values, treatment of employees, community involvement, sustainability practices, etc. — is as important as what it sells. As part of our research at The Purpose Institute (which is part of the advertising firm GSD&M Idea City) we asked a representative sample of 1,000 Americans that question last November. What percentage do you think responded in the affirmative? The answer gives a good indication of just how valid the basic assertion is that “how we do what we do is more important now than ever.” We had hoped that the number of people that found this statement “true” would be high, but we were surprised to discover that 88 percent of the respondents agreed that it was true — and this was consistent across varying levels of household income, education levels and ethnicities. Huge kudos goes out to Southwest Airlines. Scott and I were trying to figure out a way to reward such a selfless act (though its hard to do that regardless), SWA stepped up and helped us by really bringing our online relationship full circle and allowing us to meet in person at this conference.
Southwest has always been a personable and caring company in my eyes, offline - now goes the same, online.
