Possibly true but probably not. Preboarders and families would also board ahead of them.

I see that several people said to save a seat for your brother. Yet, open seating means no seat saving. Save one seat, save ten seats. It gets worse all the time.

I am a huge SW fan but have started to encounter this problem more and more. Our last flight my husband and I got B27 and in the past have never had a problem finding two seats together. This flight we boarded the plane and went to the very last row before we could find two seats together. As we walked the length of the plane any two seats together were saved.....I saw people talking while waiting to board and heard them say "remember the plan...we will save the seat for you." So one person in the group paid for early boarding and the rest didn't. In fact two rows ahead of us a lady was saving two seats. Her husband and two kids boarded and she got up and gave up all three seats. She was an employee and she spent the airtime back with the flight attendants. I said something to flight attendant about saving seats and she said they couldn't do anything as there wasn't a policy for it. I wrote to SW and made a complaint and got a standard we are looking into this but at this time we want people to sit together. My point is if they want to sit together then they should board together and all get the early boarding or not. SW needs to take a stand so they don't alienate their loyal customers.

The employees may have been deadheading to their next work assignment. I dont have a problem with them preboarding, they dont take the "prime" locations like bulkheads or exit rows.

I wish that this was more acceptable. As a person who uses a cochlear implant, it's near impossible to lipread on flights. When I fly alone, I'm always on edge because I have to be aware every second because if I'm not, I might miss something. I do wish that SW had their safety briefing on their app as a video. I flew United a few months ago and was so relieved to see that they provided the safety briefing, captioned, at the beginning of every flight. Now, they have screens on the back of each seat, but even if it this was added to SW's main in flight page, it would be so appreciated!

That wouldn't have helped. I just took a flight that was delayed by weather, making me miss my connection, so I rebooked for the next day. That lost me my "Early Bird" A group status, so I spent $180 to upgrade to Business Select the next day. (I was flying to attend a family wedding and had a short layover and little time to get to the wedding, so I felt that would guarantee that I get on/off the plane first.) They preboarded the connecting flight, they not only let multiple family members board with people in wheelchairs, they also allowed an arena football team to preboard. I'm pretty sure if you are able to play arena football, you probably don't have a disability. I sat in the first aisle seat available in row 7. Worst $180 I ever spent.

As a veteran with 100% disability, I think the idea of preboarding military is a bit over-expected. We are all people and we all have various issues, or dangerous jobs. The military is not the only one. Should there be some long list? And should there be a form or special ID? I do not expect anything special, until I get to the point where I can not walk down the jetway, then maybe something extra.

Not true. Im sure in this case that she did not magically get healed in flight like the pre-board fakers. Those that genuinly need to preboard because of visible or not visible conditions are not the problem. Those faking it to preboard are.

I just don't want to get up during the flight to use the restroom and come back to someone moving my things to the overhead and occupying my seat. That would be rude. I'm A Lisr, so I normally board early. Sometimes I visit the lav during the boarding process (especially when I expect turbulence that might prevent a lav visit during flight). I put my compuer case on my seat when I go to the lav. So essentially I'm saving my seat for --- me. I'd be more than a bit upset if someone were to remove my computer case and take my seat while I was in the lav (never happened yet).

@Lazyboy311 wrote: I’m literally shaking mad about this right now, I’ll spare you the details but THREE of my wife and I’s requests for seats were denied by the articles of clothing deemed more human than I to which the attendant simply stated that SWA “has no policy against it” and asked me to move on. I want to turn this around and explain how this hurts SWA. I have a party of 4 traveling together and paid early bird for each, so say $60 total. I would have been better off booking one business select ticket at a cost of, say $40, and saved the other seats. This results in a 33% reduction in revenue from my purchase. As I said before, this happened three times to me within 5 minutes, I can only imagine what the lost revenue was on this flight alone. Additionally, I’m going to try to be as polite as possible on this one, but the “savers” appear to not be your best customers. I, a SW Premier Card holder who booked my tickets honestly and fairly, lost out on true “open seating” due to rules that are ambiguous at best. Not only does it negatively affect customers such as myself, it results in less overall upgrades because people are aware that they only need one “good” ticket, regardless of the size of their traveling party. This policy (or lack thereof) results in frequent abuse of the system by “savers”, undermines loyal and honest customers like myself and many others out there, and results in less accessorial revenue to the company. Probably should have picked up the clothing and asking if they belonged to anyone then handed it to them and sat down.

What documentation will she need on checking in? She has a badge from gov and the dog wears a vest. My friend said she may also need some documentation from her doctor. Ive never heard of this. Is this true and if so does it need to be notarized? Thanks in advance. Depends if it is a genuine service animal or an emptional support animal. A true service animal= no paperwork required. An ESA = As listed on the website you now need a letter from a doctor. If she does not have one, they are available starting for anout $20 online.

Thiis website isn’t direct from the FAA, but it is what I’ve heard elsewhere. https://www.luggagepros.com/travel/carry-on.shtml I didnt see that in the FARs and the FAA webpage says its up to the carrier... https://www.faa.gov/travelers/prepare_fly/baggage/ I interpreted that on the FAA website to mean check ahead in case the airline has more restrictive rules and/or fees. I can't find any citation on FAA.gov that specifies this so perhaps the other articles were out of date. I'm still suspcious that all major carriers have the same personal item + carry-on item rules, but I suppose the industry could have converged on that being the best for everyone.

@dw0427 wrote: That's a crap response from Southwest. They can absolutely ask different questions to minimize the many that are now taking advantage of pre-board. Southwest is using the Federal regulations as a guise for they do not have the stones to change the policy for fear of bad publicity. As an A-List preferred Member and knowing that my status means nothing because of the ever increasing healthy folks taking advantage of the lax pre-board policy. Why bother frequently flying SW anymore? Seems to me other airlines are more stringent in pre-board than SW...... As a suggestion to SW, why do they allow the whole families of pre-board passengers to board at the same time? I don't mind those that are wheelchair bound but the countless folks that walk on the planes vs. disabled is evergrowing. airline personnel may not ask what specific disability the person has, but they can ask questions about a person’s ability to perform specific air travel-related functions, such as boarding, deplaning, or walking through the airport.

The gate agents giving out this preboarding privilige are playing Santa Claus on someone else's dime. I fully support the philosophy of preboarding but when these agents allow for abuse they are not inconveniencing themselves but those that have actually earned or paid for priority boarding. I've flown Southwest for over 30 years and this is a rapidly growing problem that Southwest management has turned a blind eye to. If they don't believe it's a problem I'd suggest they show up at BWI and watch the group of preboarders on a few flights. The people that actually deserve this preferential treatment should be the first to complain about the abuse. Instead they seem to get defensive.

@Fransoc,
Thanks for coming to the Community and posting about your experience. I think you got some really good insight and information from other Community Members about how to get your best shot at an early boarding position. We want you to enjoy traveling with us, and I hope there will be another opportunity for that in the future. It was not appropriate for our Representative to respond to your questions with sarcasm, and I'm really sorry that happened. It's reasonable that you would be left with a bad taste in your mouth, but I can assure you we appreciate your business and the expectation we have for ourselves is that we are serving our Customers with friendliness and warmth.
I'm closing the comments on this thread as the conversation has started to veer a little off course.

@spacecoastbill wrote: The only way to rectify it is to go to assigned seating. That is not going to happen anytime soon. I disagree. While assigned seating may ultimately be the only real solution to some Southwest boarding issues, such as pre-boarding abuse, that's not true when it comes to seat saving. As has been suggested, a specific seat saving policy (allowing the saving of only one adjacent seat, for one example) could do much to help alleviate perceived boarding pain.
