Yes, you can refuse to check your carry-on...but the chances are that neither you nor your carry-on will continue on that flight. You will most probably be deplaned.
Be proactive and always expect that this may happen. I carry a small fabric, grocery-type bag in my carry-on. If I'm asked to check it, I remove all valuables, electronics, medications, etc. and place them in this bag. This bag will easily fit under the seat in front of me.

Hi Adisyn,
Just so you don't have an unexpected surprise the day you fly...
Is your dog a therapy dog, an emotional support dog, or a psychiatric service dog? There is a huge difference between the three. Psychiatric service dogs require extensive training and have a vital role. They are recognized as service dogs by the ADA and have certain rights protected by federal law. Therapy dogs and emotional support animals, while also serving very important purposes, do not have these same rights. SWA no longer accepts emotional support animals on flights, regardless of certification. Just in case your goldendoodle is an ESA, he would most likely not be allowed in the cabin without a $95 pet fee and an under-seat carrier.
If your dog is, in fact, a PSA...you're good to go! I hope both of you have a nice flight.

BigRob69 said: "One guy was a little smaller in height to me and took one of the emergency row seats?"
Uh...so? The exit row is not reserved for tall customers. I am 5'2" and sit in exit row seats 90% of the time. I will not give up my seat due to your body size.
BigRob69 said: "So, do I tell the gate agent I'm 6'8" and want pre-board?"
Pre-boarding customers aren't supposed to sit in the exit row, so that isn't going to help you.

I always used (and still use) Carmel Car and Limo Service in NYC. They have large sedans, minivans, SUVs, and even large vans and Sprinters (but the price rises considerably when using those).
They were always on time, polite, and performed their services exactly as needed.
Enjoy moving your kiddo to college in NY. It truly is an exciting time for both of you!

I've had this happen to me many, many times with other purchases...where it shows up as pending and then just disappears into credit card land.
I'm willing to bet that you will see it as a true charge by next Tuesday morning. I'm noticing that pending charges on my Citi account don't go from pending to hard charges from Friday through Monday. Sometime during Monday night, magic happens, and there they are on Tuesday morning.

There are numerous YouTube videos on different methods for packing a suit in a suitcase. My husband's suits have always arrived in pristine condition when packed accordingly. I use a dry cleaner bag, tissue paper, and three of those shipping air bladders or doubled-up bubble wrap in the folds to avoid wrinkles.

Be aware that you can pack all of your medical supplies in a separate carry-on bag and it won't count as your 1 personal item and 1 carry-on. In other words, you are allowed a third carry-on of medical devices/supplies.
Delays and cancellations seem to be the unfortunate norm these days. Be sure to bring a few emergency low carb snacks to keep your blood sugar steady since most snacks served on the plane are high carb. Nuts are a great choice. Also bring a high carb snack or honey sticks to counter an insulin high. Pack your glucagon injector (and know how to use it) to treat an emergency low. And if you're flying through different time zones, taper your eating/insulin schedule so it isn't altered too much.
Lastly, bring a hard-sided container to act as a sharps container for your used pen needles. Label it to keep TSA safe. Most restrooms in airports have sharp containers if you need to empty it before you fly home.
Have a safe flight!

Semantically, your thinking that SWA "stole" from you is very off-putting. I'm pretty sure that SWA did not want or need your personal belongings.
Your bag could have been:
Misdirected
Accidently taken by another passenger
Intentionally stolen by another passenger
Intentionally stolen by TSA
Had a damaged routing label
Misdirected because the wrong destination was typed in by check-in agent
Unfortunately, all of this happens with all airlines on a daily basis.
If your attitude with CS is heavy with your "stealing" scenario and you mention lawyers, you're not setting yourself up for the results you desire. Just sayin'...

Spoiler Alert:
Soon-to-be posting about how there is actually no difference between "Business Select" seats and all other seats...just a better boarding position. Maybe the goal was to snag that "great" exit row seat, but for $300??

"Anyone have a fix or sure fire method?"
I know exactly what you're talking about!
I don't know if this is a sure fire method, but when I check in family, I use the 4-second rule...one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi, four Mississippi...and then click the check-in button. It works every time without having to go back and start over, losing "valuable" seconds.

I'm sorry that the customer service agent didn't give you a more thorough explanation.
Once your travel funds expire, there is a $100 charge to extend those expiring travel funds for 6 months. If you had $200 in travel funds, you would have paid $100 to have $100 left...which would then need to be used in the next 6 months. You didn't have enough travel funds to be charged the $100 fee, hence, your funds could not be extended.

I also have the one that DancingDavidE has. I love it! I can easily fit 2 pairs of shoes, 5 mid-season outfits, and a set of workout clothes in it, plus toiletries. When I need to pack a jacket, it expands to fit it. I carry my laptop in a tote that goes under the seat in front of me. I would really consider the smaller size for reasons already mentioned upstream.

@Superk08 SWA did NOT "steal your hard earned money." You said, "We thought we had a year to use that is what every single company is doing." There lies your problem. You thought. Instead, you needed to know. In your rush to purchase great non-refundable fares, you didn't understand the ramifications of canceling, pandemic or no pandemic. "They did not provide me a service how can they keep my money !" Because you agreed to their policies when you purchased those tickets. Further, "every single company is doing." Not true. This is entirely on you and blaming SWA is completely unfair. I understand that you're upset. But being emotional and unfairly ranting makes it hard to sympathize.

Back in the day when we traveled with hiking carriers... I always brought a 45-55 gallon trash bag (the clear, heavy-duty, yard and leaf kind from Costco). I would first pre-write my name/address/phone/flight number(s) on the outside of the bag and let the ink dry. I would then fold it up into a little square and put in into the carrier's pocket. At the gate, the carrier went into the plastic bag and the bag was knotted tightly. It was then gate checked. The plastic bag kept it from getting dirty, the straps were contained, and the baggage handlers knew what was inside to <hopefully> handle with care. It's always a good idea to put an identity tag on the item itself.

Per lindam: "All but 3 of the 20 were able bodied people walking onto the airplane." How do you know this? That's right...you don't. There are all sorts of reasons that may require pre-boarding...accessibility to a restroom, impaired sight, pain, anxiety, a broken arm, etc. Just because a person is not in a wheelchair doesn't mean that they don't have a disability. Quite honestly, it's none of your business. Be lucky you don't have such a disability.

Is it legal for an airline to change your destination airport? Yes. They have the power to switch your arrival, layover, and departure airports for a variety of reasons. And there is this: "Each airline has its own policies about what it will do for delayed passengers waiting at the airport; there are no federal requirements. If you are delayed, ask the airline staff if it will pay for meals or a phone call. Some airlines, often those charging very low fares, do not provide any amenities to stranded passengers. Others may not offer amenities if the delay is caused by bad weather or something else beyond the airline's control. Contrary to popular belief, for domestic itineraries airlines are not required to compensate passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled. ...Compensation is required by law on domestic trips only when you are "bumped" from a flight that is oversold." Source: U.S. Department of Transportation I am sorry this happened to you and your family. I've been through this many, many times. It's never fun.

@Gbonne YOU are the one lacking ethics. And YOU are the one who should be shamed if you attempt to shame a fellow passenger. It is tacky, at best, to ask a stranger why they might be pre-boarding. Many folks have hidden disabilities. You really need to mind your own business and reconsider your own moral principles at play here.

Baggage chaos is never fun. I'm sorry you experienced this. However, your computer should never have been packed in your checked luggage. Unfortunately, SWA is not responsible for the damage it incurred. The baggage policies are spelled out in SWA's Contract of Carriage, to which you agreed upon the purchase of your ticket: High-Value Items Unsuitable for Checked Baggage. Carrier assumes no responsibility for and will not be liable for money; jewelry; photographic, video, and optical equipment; computers and other electronic equipment; computer software; silverware and china; fragile or perishable items; liquids; precious gems and metals; negotiable instruments; securities; business or personal documents; samples; items intended for sale; paintings, artifacts, and other works of art; antiques; collectors’ items; unique or irreplaceable items; heirlooms; research, experimental, and scholastic items and documents; manuscripts; furs; irreplaceable books or publications; and similar valuables contained in carryon or Checked Baggage. For the Passenger’s protection, these items should not be transported in or as Checked Baggage.

But...remember that boarding can begin up to 30 minutes before the departure time. If you have an A boarding position and your first flight arrives late, then you might not be there when the A positions board, thus losing your ability to choose a better seat. If your first flight arrives on time, then your extra 30 minutes before boarding begins can be put to good use...for that sandwich fish taco from Wahoo's 😋. If you are content to just make the flight, 1 hour is fine.
