Hello-
I think this might be a technical issue on Southwest's end. At what point are you getting this error on the app and when did this error pattern start? (Logging In? Booking Flight? Check-in?)
If you need to check-in or modify a flight for now, I would continue to use the Southwest website option until this resolves. I would also respond back to their reply that you tried the "generic" solution which did not resolve the problem.

It’s getting late in the year for me to try to re-qualify for A-List Preferred for 2024. If I buy the Business Select fare for me, is my Companion pass passenger eligible to buy the Early bird boarding so she at least is not among the last of the C-group to board? And the sooner the CP buys early bird boarding, the better??
Thanks.
If you go for Business Select, it is my understanding that your companion does not get the sequential boarding benefit or a spot in A1-15. I would not do Early Bird Check-In (EBCI) as the boarding spot will be after all Business Select, all A-List Preferred/A-List Priority Boarding spots, and all Anytime Fares booked > 36 hours prior which could mean a spot in B even with EBCI. Rather, if spots are available, I would have companion purchase Upgraded Boarding after check-in for a A1-15 spot.

Hey folks. Recently flew from Baltimore to West Palm. Upon entering cabin saw first row had empty middle seat full of laptops and other stuff. I had to stare down the two fools in the aisle and window seats in order to claim this seat. I got no help from flight attendants. They would not make eye contact and ignored the confrontation. These two grown men then harassed me for the entire flight. Flight attendants witnessed this and looked the other way. I had to shove them off the armrests and fight for my space. Fortunately I am perfectly capable. I communicated with Southwest and they sent me $150 voucher which I will probably never use. I’m done. They refuse to admit they have a problem and continue to allow bullies to run the boarding process. Saving middle space fore their on comfort and saving window and aisle seats for friends who did not register early. Not right. They know it.The most stressful issue their flight attendants have and they don’t give a hoot.

Hello-
The seat saving issue has been discussed numerous times on this board. I have not seen a written rule about this item: I don't see a clause in the policy that seat saving is allowed; I also don't see one that outlaws this.
It looks like you've already chatted with Customer Service about your incident and received a LUV Voucher, but for this circumstance as well as pre-boarding, my moral rule kicks in to keep the environment positive...Be proactive, be humble.
Typically when I board Southwest flights, I look for the first open Window seat starting from the second row on...Since I typically board in the A-Group, I first look for a whole empty row first and claim the window seat but sometimes I'll notice upon entering the cabin that somebody is already occupying the Aisle seat, Middle, or both for the entire full first half of the plane on both sides, especially for through-flights.
At that point, I'll look for the first open Window and I'll ask if I can take the Window. Almost always, they'll let me sit there; if they claim it's "saved", I accept it and move on to look for the next available Window seat further back. That proactively averts unwanted altercations with my seatmates.
Likewise, I will do the same thing but in reverse if I'm seated with nobody else in the section. If the flight is not full and I find an empty row, I will not attempt to 'save' (i.e.: block) the other seats in the area. If somebody wants to sit in the open seats there despite how empty the flight is, I'll let them sit there.

On a recent trip to Hawaii and back, I was not receiving TSA pre-check. TSA was helpful when I called, but asked me to check first with Southwest. (I see from other threads that Southwest software may be having distinct problems recognizing KTNs.)
First, I got help from Alison during check-in at RDU early on Sept 12. Not only did she check one bag from RDU through to Honolulu (my flights were RDU to Nashville, then Nashville to Honolulu), she invited a less-experienced agent to learn how to do that. Then Alison tackled the KTN conundrum, and got my TSA pre-check activated through to Honolulu. The problems were some combo of how my name is rendered in my TSA record and in my Southwest account, and a typo I introduced in my TKN when making the reservations.
Returning via Honolulu on 9/21, I got help from Shannon Correa to get pre-check on my next 2 flights. (This was a complicated trip!) Finally, Audrey helped me out via phone on Sept 24 for the last segment of my travels.
I wish I hadn't had the difficulties I did getting TSA pre-check for boarding Southwest flights, but I very much appreciate the skill and good humor that all three of these Southwest employees demonstrated on my behalf. Mahalo!
Awesome to hear these fantastic stories! 👍👍
Would you do these fine Southwest persons a little favor. Since this forum is a Customer-to-Customer discussion board, would you forward your compliment in an email directly to Southwest Customer Service:

NASA has a short and informative article on the purpose of the plane's winglets.

Greetings Community-
We all received the Promotional Companion Pass offer back in August...I had the opportunity to register and book the required roundtrip during the promo and took the flight last week. This day trip was to PHX for combined business and a visit to a friend. Got some decent A-List Priority Boarding spots: A33 Inbound, A46 Return...Lots of A-Listers on this one!
In response to the "Where did I park" post from last week, I tried out this feature on the app:
Parked for free at a North San Diego County area bus station and boarded a MTS Rapid bus to downtown for $2.50 for the hourlong bus ride. The lot supports secure free overnight parking with permit if taking a transit bus by calling the station security phone number posted on the signs and providing a contact, make/model/license plate of the car. No permit required for day use. Not logging out of the Southwest app keeps the data in tact as verified per the thread.
Got to SAN and the inbound flight was due to depart on time from the Terminal 1 east concourse; that meant nice views of the New Terminal 1 construction process:
The Bird for the Inbound AM Trip to PHX
Fleet: 737-700; Full Flight, Preboarders: 3
The flight route follows the Mexico border for the California leg, giving those who take a window seat on the right side of the plane some nice views. Here's some shots looking down south as the plane heads east to PHX...and no Passport required for this sightseeing experience:
Tecate:
El Hongo:
This includes a shot of the maximum security Cereso El Hongo prison (left area of the photo) which was featured on Netflix's Inside the World's Toughest Prisons with the full show later published to YouTube...After watching that documentary, I have no room left for any complaining...
Down the Mountain and into the desert from La Rumorosa:
Mexicali up close with Laguna Salada behind the mountains:
Crossing the state line into AZ. In the back of the picture across the international border, San Luis Rio Colorado:

Somebody once said that this forum is a "great place for Customers to share experiences and information with each other, but it is not a platform where (the airline is) able to process Customer Service comments or concerns."
Made it to PHX
Big crowds as expected at Terminal 4...specifically at both the Southwest and American Airlines concourses...Managed to find a quiet empty gate in the international flights area to get some work done (...and to check this board) before my appointments.
PHX's free general WiFi works great and with no firewall blocking my Outlook email program...Great speeds for general work and browsing. Just watch an 8 second commercial, agree to the terms and you're in!
The hallway behind the glass wall next to the gate seats is PHX's international arrivals corridor leading to the international CBP Port of Entry which is downstairs.
Taking the SkyTrain to the Valley Metro public transit train...
Spent the day taking care of my business and my visit. Later in the afternoon, it's time to return home!
Flight back home is on time!
PHX posted the estimated TSA wait times and that all gates can be accessed airside via any checkpoint! Great to know!
Stopping over at this quiet inter-faith sanctuary before crossing through TSA, located at Terminal 4 landside near the B-Gates TSA Checkpoint.

Hello-
The Priority Card includes x4 Upgraded Boardings which lets you snag an open A1-A15 boarding position at the 24-hour mark in place of the x2 Early Bird Check In which improves your boarding spot but does not guarantee an A-position. Both options are subject to availability but you would have a much better boarding spot via the x4 Upgraded Boardings benefit. Would this be something you would use?
Of course, the only drawback of using this perk instead of Early Bird would be needing to check in manually at the 24 hour mark.

Yep...The date of the flight is also part of the confirmation number embedded in the barcode data. That means if one has two separate bookings from SAN-LAS for example, one in the fall and one in the spring and the passenger saved the fall boarding pass as a souvenir following the fall trip, its barcode will 'bonk' and not work for the later spring trip; the separate boarding pass issued for the spring trip is to be used.

2. Why cannot they put the message on the portal if that is the way to communicate?
3. Why do they take 30 days to call the customer...

Since this forum is customer-to-customer, I would submit an email asking about the 30-day turnaround directly to Southwest Customer Service. Email is usually the best means for such questions to reach the proper staff members for best answers and corrective action if needed. Not sure if they can assist with expediting your case but worth asking.

Also assuming you did not make any Same Day Standby changes after checking the bags nor check the bags within 45 minutes of the original departure as that would create a voluntary baggage separation issue.

Note that this is almost always the case with incidental deposits that usually get credited back within a few days. Also check with the rental car company too.

It's tied to that specific flight on that day, so if you tried to use it the next day even for the same flight number you'd get "bonk" noise again.
@CupCrusher40 :
Think of your boarding pass barcode as an old-school physical ticket that gets turned in to a ticket taker. Once the Gate CSA scans the barcode, the computer "takes" the valid barcode which contains your flight confirmation details and additional secure encrypted code. Once the computer validates and confirms the "taken" barcode is good, you'll hear the good beeps as @DancingDavidE mentioned. The computer then updates the itinerary on file for that ticketed passenger by recording the boarding. Once that happens, the barcode is "taken" and that same boarding pass cannot be used again.
On fun fact is that the computer and barcode system also ensures nobody is cutting the line by confirming the passenger is boarding with their designated group or later (e.g. If you hold a B-position ticket without pre-boarding and try to slip in with the A boarding group, the computer will catch that the ticket holder is in the incorrect group and return a bonk).

Hello everyone. I purchased four tickets for myself and three friends for a trip in less than two weeks from now. One of the friends moms ended up having an accident that required her to have major surgery on her arm, because of this that friend no longer has someone to watch her kids for our trip and she had to cancel out. I have another friend interested in taking her place, however, The tickets I bought for us are wanna get away. Now I’ve read other posts where people have said to cancel the flight for credit, then use the credit to purchase a ticket with get way plus to get the transferable credit to transfer to the other person. My problem is that to either upgrade or just purchase a new ticket for our flight with plus will cost an extra $200. What I’m wondering is, can I cancel the original flight and get the credit, then just find any other flight available from southwest going anywhere that cost the same price as the credit, (like say just a one way ticket priced the amount of my credit) buy that ticket with the get away plus, then cancel right away to get the transferable credit? The friend we want to transfer to already has credit on her account for another canceled flight, the credit she already has plus credit from this flight is enough for her to a buy a ticket for herself on our flight, that is why I don’t want pay $200 more, and then have an extra $200 worth of credit sitting there or sent to her. Thanks in advanced.
Hello!
Best wishes for your friend who cannot make it.
You are correct that your friend will not be able to keep the same price given the changed posted price between the time of original booking and today.
I am aware that there was a reported loophole published on this board and elsewhere that allows a non-transferable WGA flight credit to be 'converted' into a 'fresh' transferable credit by using the original credit toward purchase of any WGA+ fare on a date between any two destination so as long it does not conflict with any other existing bookings. After booking that flight, that person would cancel that reservation and the returned credit is reported to be a transferable flight credit.
I don't know if this is still valid as I've never needed to do something like this. It appears according to Southwest Policy that it can still be done given that there are no published restrictions on fare class when purchasing flights with a non-transferable flight credit nor when receiving a WGA+ transferable flight credit:
What are flight credits?
A flight credit is a credit from either a canceled flight or a downgrade in fare that can be used to buy a future flight.
How do I book a flight with a flight credit?
When booking a flight, you’ll see an option to apply a flight credit on the payment screen and can do so by entering the confirmation number associated with the flight credit. Each Passenger can use a total of three forms of payment per booking, and each flight credit counts as a form of payment.
WGA+ Transferable Flight Credit Policy:
Transferable Flight Credit™ allows you to transfer your flight credit to someone else. Both must be Rapid Rewards® Members and only one transfer is permitted. Transferable Flight Credits don't expire. For bookings made through a Southwest® Business channel, there is a limitation to transfer only between employees within the organization.
If you try it and it works, great! If not, I believe the worst case scenario is that your friend would retain this credit for future use.

When I went to check in at Birmingham, the check in agent was fiddling with my bag and I placed my ID and boarding pass on the top level of the workstation. Being confused, since it was right there within about 10 inches from her hand, I must have paused long enough for her to repeat, "hand me your ID please".
What's up with the inability to move your hand 10 inches and pick it up? I've encountered more and more check in agents who behave in this manner. Is any of this Southwest policy?
Hello!
Not sure of whether the CSA is at fault. She may have expected the ID to be handed to her. Whenever I'm carded (during TSA screening or elsewhere), I hand the requester the card to his/her hand and don't place it on the desk for them to take.
However, what was the overall tone of the CSA during the second "hand me your ID please" request? Were there any signs of an aggressive or demanding tone other than a polite second request? If so, you may consider emailing a complaint.

Otherwise, if she politely asked for it a second time, it may have been a valid request.

They are always willing to help me out I just wanted to let everybody know it’s Southwest and the community. How wonderful everyone is doing thank you again Southwest
Great to hear the good things coming from California's biggest airports!
I've been up to the Bay area a few times but have always booked OAK as the destination airport mainly due to better overall airfare value and more flight options throughout the day...If I find a Southwest deal for SFO for a future Bay Area trip, I'll certainly check these out given the new infrastructure there (and friendly Southwest staff).
Haven't flown Southwest out of LAX and currently have no plans to do so (the trouble for me using LAX as my origin airport are my inbound ground transit options for my short-duration trips...for now!). Of all of SoCal's airports, LAX generally has the best pricing for airfare, especially going to LAS or PHX. However currently, getting in and out of that area on the I-405 and through that terminal loop can be brutal; the existing ground services can add up in costs.
LA Metro and LAX are working on projects to resolve this and LAX will likely be a more feasible option for me once this happens: Once LAX's people mover train opens, LA Metro opens the A-Line (formerly Gold Line) Foothill Extension east to Montclair and reconfigures the routing of the current C-Line (Green) to connect directly to LAX's people mover. The existing Montclair Station has free and secure parking that supports overnight parking (not sure of the max duration) and numerous options of getting into Downtown LA. Also doing my homework of finding safe and free overnight spots to park along Metro's Route 460 via Orange County as this currently feeds into C-Line.
Anyway, I've talked too much!...Would you do all the Southwest staff at SFO and LAX a favor; would you email your compliment directly to Southwest; that way, the local persons and management can receive the praises due.

I have a flight today that was changed by Southwest. “We’re sorry we had to change your flight(s). A change to your itinerary has impacted your original reservation. If you don’t like your new itinerary, you can change it for free, up to two times.”
I want to change my flight today using my A-List privilege of free same-day changes (which I do regularly, and is a huge reason I fly SW), NOT one of the two changes listed above because (a) I have the same-day change privilege so I don’t need to use one of those two changes offered and (b) I want to be able to change the return flight the two times in case I need to.
I called customer service and experienced my first encounter with a painfully rude rep in the 15+ years I have been flying with Southwest: “Well guess what, it’s going to count as a change.”
Anyway - does anyone know what my options are here? Are my A-List privileges waived when *Southwest* makes changes to *my* itinerary?
Hello-
Southwest-initiated flight changes allows you to alter both the dates and times of the flight up to two times whereas the A-List Same Day Flight Change benefit allows you to change to a different flight time on the same day if available with no limit. I think that's where the confusion was.
Southwest Policy:
Change your flight
If you have been affected by an involuntary change, you can change each flight date/time in your original reservation, both the impacted and non-impacted, by up to 14 days from your original travel date up to two times at no additional cost.
https://www.southwest.com/help/changes-and-cancellations/changing-cancelling-flights
Since you're flying today, I would make the outbound Same Day Flight change via the app or online to your desired time so that you're all confirmed and checked in for the outbound trip. Do the same for your return trip on the date of return if needed.
If you run into any issues with this, I would go to the ticket counter for help. Don't forget you have front of the line benefits with A-List with the Fly-By Priority Lane.
Lastly, after your trip, I would also report the telephone CSA rep incident in an email to Southwest. That type of a response is not normal.

As of today, everything is AOK. Try logging in again.

So on my recent Tues-Wed trip I used the new “Where did I park?” feature in the Southwest app (iPhone). There is an option to take a photo and add notes, and I did both. When I returned from my trip and looked at “Where did I park?” none of the data was available! No photo and no notes! It was like I never entered anything. Thank goodness I remembered where I parked! 🤣 So I’m trying it again, this time I am just adding a note. I want to see if the note remains after a day. If the app is only keeping the data for 24 hours, that isn’t helpful 😂
Also as a side note - the Delete text is wrapping onto the next line for both notes and photos:
Has anyone else used this feature without any issues?

Hi Jessica-
I have never used this feature but have an upcoming Tue-Wed trip coming up later in October. I found the option on my phone app and I'll try to reproduce what you saw during this trip so that it is in conjunction with an active flight itinerary.
Looks like you're doing an offline 'test' of this feature. You know the drill if it disappears after 24 hours...let 'em know:

I am an A-Lister and earned Companion Pass for 2023. If I wanted to try to catch an earlier flight home on Standby, would my companion be also be able to fly standby as well? The last time I flew standby we were both A-List and purchased revenue flights so this is new to me.
Hello!
Here's Southwest's Policy:
On the day of travel, Companion Pass holders who have a Companion already booked and would like to use the same-day standby benefit can get added to the same-day standby list only in person at the airport with a Southwest Customer Service Agent located at the ticket counter or departure gate. Companion Pass holders and Companions cannot use the Southwest app or mobile web to list for standby. If seats become available for you and your Companion on the flight, you will receive an email or text message (based on the flight status contact preference selected during booking) with a link to access your new boarding pass. You and your Companion will both need to retrieve your new boarding passes via the Southwest app or mobile web or visit a Southwest Customer Service Agent at the ticket counter or departure gate to request new boarding passes.
Keep in mind that a Companion must travel with the Companion Pass holder. If the Companion and Companion Pass holder choose not to travel together, the Companion must purchase a ticket at the applicable fare in order to travel.
https://www.southwest.com/help/changes-and-cancellations/same-day-change-same-day-standby
Looks like the answer is 'Yes', but the request needs to be done with a CSA at the ticket counter or at the gate and the registered Companion needs to be with you during the transaction. It cannot be done via the app or website.
If you request at the ticket counter, I see no problem with both of you going through the Fly-By Priority Lane to bypass the line.

I've spoken twice this week with SWA trying to figure out why the 7,409 points at statement end that Chase confirmed was sent over on 9/19/23 have not yet posted. I was told there is a known issue and IT is working on this, but wanted to confirm. Anyone having this issue?
Between these points and the points that will post mid October, I will earn my companion pass and want to start booking my holiday travel (hence the urgency;)
Hello-
It sounds like you're already working with Southwest on this. I would wait on this until tomorrow morning. That's because I was booking some flights online yesterday under this promotion and the website was acting a little slow and glitchy during the afternoon (e.g. the WOW50 banner ad would sometimes not show up at all but show a generic Southwest banner, account login session drops, etc.).
Southwest also simultaneously posted a job opening posting for Flight Attendants yesterday morning that lasted a few hours and most likely received an overwhelming response from the public given the amount of posting activity on this message board; that job posting had known issues too as this message board is flooded with comments that documents that the Flight Attendant posting unexpectedly "disappeared" just 30 minutes into the posting period; that was fixed a short while later and assume this glitch and your points posting are IT-related given the increased web traffic to the website yesterday (speculation on my end; I could be wrong).
I would hold off 'til tomorrow morning. If the points don't post tomorrow and you're looking to lock in a deal with the WOW50 offer before it expires then, I would call the airline back once more to see if they can help you get your flights booked with the points for the promotional rate. If the phone rep does not help you, I would follow up with an email or Twitter/X DM to Southwest documenting your intentions and sequence of events.

50% off base fares on select flights 10/24 though 3/6 book by September 28th
Done 🙂
SoCalFlyer97 found some good deals and has booked 'em! This included picking smaller 'convivence' airports in SoCal like ONT which typically have much higher base airfare than at larger airports like SAN for short-haul flights that I usually take.
Should I stick to my plans, I'll be posting Photo Reports of these...
Stay tuned!

Every variation I try doesn't qualify for discount. I have read the fine print numerous times. I am not using blackout dates or locations. Keep getting an error message.
I would keep looking and adjust dates or even destinations if needed...I found as I was booking flights that a number of flights (or various SoCal airports) during their peak times appear to not qualify even though they were not specifically called out in the terms. This also occurs during Southwest's $29/$39/$49-sales too.
Example: Friday is usually rush hour for commuter flights between SAN and SMF after mid-morning. Only the early morning flights would qualify in this case, especially if travel occurs during a peak travel period like Thanksgiving, Christmas or Spring Break:
Keep looking...I'm sure you'll find some good deals if you're flexible with dates or locations!

NEVER USE SOUTHWEST HOTEL BOOKINGS. It is a scam, and you never receive email confirmations. Not in your email or junk or spam. You cannot find the hotel in your Southwest.com account. It is nowhere!!!! After you book, you are "forbidden to cancel" by Southwest Hotels. Even if you try and cancel weeks and months before check-in, Southwest Hotels claims your money is non-refundable. Southwest Hotels says, "They will do everything to work on [your] behalf (I have this in writing from Southwest), to refund your money when you cancel," and they LIE that the "hotel said they could not refund due to hotel policy" (I have this in writing). I contacted the hotel and researched its policy online, and they said they charge 48 hours before cancellation. I had canceled 96 hours before. The hotel also advised me that they do not have my money and that the third-party Southwest Hotels- does. When I, for the 100th time through phone calls and emails, finally got in touch with a live person at Southwest Hotel Concierge, again, they said that the Hotel's policy said it was not refundable (I have this in emails). Why would anyone book a hotel through Southwest Hotels if it is non-refundable when they could book directly with the Hotel of their choice and get a full refund? Southwest still has my money and is still claiming the Hotel does. Which hotel, I ask? They said a "third supplier"? What? What third supplier? They said, "It just says supplier"? Again, I say, who is your "supplier"? They said, "It just says supplier"? WHAT? I have gotten the runaround for over a day. I am now on day 2 of trying to clarify who, What, and Why I can't get a refund or get my hotel room back (since I paid for it and now Southwest Hotels canceled it and has claimed it back along with my money). WHAT IS GOING ON????? PLEASE HELP IF YOU HAVE FOUND A RESOLUTION.
Hello!
I think the communication chain broke somewhere when you attempted to get the refund. The policy is if you booked a pre-paid (assuming Points Plus property) room on the Southwest Hotels portal and the room option was marked as "Free Cancellation until (DATE/TIME)", you should be able to cancel directly through the portal with your confirmation number and guest name.
https://secure.southwesthotels.com/myreservations.html
If you don't have your confirmation number or the automated system give you trouble, I would try calling through again and clarify the following:
Date of Reservation + Hotel Reserved
Date you attempted to cancel
Advertised deadline date and time that was given to you for free cancellation
concierge@southwesthotels.com 1-844-782-9792 773-770-4953
Note that Southwest Hotels uses the Bookings.com engine to reserve rooms. I've used this portal several times and had no issues with the Points Plus properties including one I had to cancel after finding better pricing; I can't speak for the non-Points Plus bookings. Confirmation emails usually come in either immediately or within a few hours after booking. I always save the confirmation webpage and note cancellation deadlines too in case I have a problem getting the email.
Anyway, try contacting SW Hotels again. If you made the attempt to cancel a reservation that was advertised as a refundable property on Southwest Hotels within the defined timeframe and you were not able to cancel the booking successfully even after attempting to contact Southwest Hotels, you may be able to dispute the charge with your bank.

Is there a way to add to my account a reservation made (for me) by someone else? This would be primarily for enabling me to use the app to check in and board not so concerned about RR or anything like that.
If you have the flight's confirmation number that's booked for you, you should be able to check in 24 hours prior to flight time via website or phone app. You should also be able to manage the trip:
Check In: https://www.southwest.com/air/check-in/
or select "Check In" at the bottom of the phone app. (available 24 hours prior to flight departure)
Change/Cancel Flight: https://www.southwest.com/
Click on Change/Cancel
or select "Manage Flights" from the left pop-out menu on the phone app.
For both: Enter Confirmation # and First/Last Name as reserved.
Let me know if this works.

Hey does anyone know if SW does any deals like the WOW 50% off around Christmas time?
I echo @DancingDavidE
Likely no sales during the Christmas peak travel season as most travel dates during this time are blacked out from deals. However, don't give up hope! Here's some additional tips that I use to save some money while traveling:
If you plan on spending at least $500 in Southwest airfare (any class) and you are a member of Sam's Club, they currently have the $500 Southwest Gift Card on sale for $450...10% off. Since this is a full value $500 gift card, this 'deal' can be combined with Southwest offers with no blackouts. Costco had a similar sale last spring and I used the gift card in conjunction with Southwest's fare deals to save some big money during the peak summer travel season. TQP Points are also still earned if paying airfare by gift card too.
Bring an empty reusable water bottle. Bottled water and drinks sold at the airport can get very pricey! Just make sure it's completely empty when going through TSA. Also consider eating your meals offsite before heading to the airport.
If your trips involve staying at a hotel, consider booking with either Southwest Hotels or Rocket Miles and shop/reserve a Points Plus property which can net you some generous Rapid Rewards points good toward airfare (and Companion Pass). I've also been able to find good base pricing even on Friday and Saturday nights in hot tourist spots where hotel pricing can get excessively high. If the hotel offers a full free breakfast, that too can save you some big money on meal costs, especially on return day. I've been able to snag anywhere from 500-2,000 Rapid Reward Points per night during my last few hotel stays.
If your trip involves a car rental, consider renting off-site or through an alternative provider by researching the market and public transit options at the destination city. Car rental prices from the airport are usually marked up and generally higher than off-site locations.
Lastly, if your trip spans several days, have somebody or a ground service take you to the airport because parking costs at the airport can add up! SAN for example charges $38 per 24 hours at the time of this post. I've always loved getting around the huge airport parking fees at SAN by parking offsite in a safe San Diego neighborhood for free that allows overnight parking, riding a San Diego MTS freeway Express bus into town and to the airport for $2.50-$5 each way. I had a business trip last May in Vegas and my boss was happy to not see a $76 parking fee on my trip expense report! Safe travels!
