This ended up being a comedy of errors, almost the perfect storm of bad situations. I contacted Chase, they gave me even more bad advice, but eventually I talked to a supervisor at the call center that gave me a solution that, while wasn't perfect, has worked out. Keeping an open mind and allowing the situation to play out was the key. I kept the attitude that if this didn't work out, it wasn't a horrible thing anyway and my life would go on. I killed the, with kindness and things are finally worked out.

@jamesp wrote: Getting a name changed on a ticket is a terrible experience. Agreed, although I think it is meant to be a difficult process. @jamesp wrote: Getting a name changed on a ticket is a terrible experience. I travel every other week on Southwest and for the first time had a work flight accidentally booked using my Middle Name instead of First Name. After contacting Southwest twice I discovered that I cannot change the first name and have to cancel and repay for my ticket even though the ticket is clearly connected to my identify by DOB. My challenge is my ticket purchase being handled by another company. I fly enough that I have TSA Precheck and earned a companion pass. Given I can't change the name, the ticket is now useless as I cannot use my ID or TSA Precheck with it and also can't enable my wife to travel with me using Companion Pass. If I book and pay for a new flight on my own it's now cheaper to just fly American. Looks like that will be my path unfortunately but might start flying with American more often. I don't understand why the other company that made the booking can't fix it? It should be their responsibility to track it down through all of the painful steps. Are you certain that there isn't any way for you to show your ID with middle name and fly? Obviously you would forgo the TSA PreCheck as you mentioned, and ability to add companion pass. Even the travel funds would be worthless until they expired, then maybe it would make sense to convert them to a voucher. I don't know that this process would be any easier with tickets from any other carrier. If it was noticed within the 24-hour window then it could have been canceled no questionsd asked, and then rebooked. Anyway - I'd try Southwest again, I'm sure they get people booked by middle names all the time (people that go by their middle name especially) and see what another rep can do for you. It might be worth trying again to get a second opinion. Call the A-list number too so they know you are a frequent customer off the bat. @Maybe try Twitter as well, @SouthwestAir - don't send any identying information until they ask for a direct message.

Hello. You are not alone. Lots of people are nervous flyers. Some have ended up here and asked about the topic. Rather than try to recreate the discussions, it's easier to provide links to them. You'll do fine. I'd suggest that you Just follow some of the suggestions. https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/In-the-Air/Nervous-First-Timer/m-p/79089#M908 https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/In-the-Air/Severe-flight-anxiety/m-p/79787#M945 https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/In-the-Air/Fearful-Flyer/td-p/76841 https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Southwest-Stories/Hope-For-Fearful-Fliers/ba-p/13095

@mrsmcfoy wrote: Hello, I am trying to find flights for 5 people on 2/24 from Florida to New York. The flights are extremely high ($400 - $500 one way). Can you tell me why the flights are so high? It's looking like we will have to re-schedule our vacation if the cost doesn't go down. I can understand flights being a little higher because students may be coming off of break, but $400 - $500 in one direction is completely outrageous. Can anything be done to help? I like @dfwskier 's suggestions, but also try booking for 4 people, then 3, 2 - if your group size takes up all of the remaining tickets allocated to a cost bucket, the quote will be for all tickets in the higher one. So you may find some savings by booking 1, 2, 3, or 4 tickets and then the remaining tickets at the higher rate. Obviously if you are looking at the same flight and even 1 ticket is BS only, then it's a tough travel day. If that's still too high, then alternate airports or dates will be needed.

It is disappointing that people take advantage of preboarding. What's the adage, you reap what you sow?

I don't know about the curbside service, I don't believe I have seen someone from SWA comes out to help peoples with needs at curbside. But, A few weeks after discharged from the hospital while on vacation out of state, I had a blood clot both D.V.T. and P.E. and I was cleared by the doctor for me to go home on airplane. My daughter took me to the airport and she helped me with one of two luggage and I had a walking cane for a temporary times, due to my blood clot. The worse part is: TSA. after going through the screening process and by the time when I turned around and to my dismay, one of the passenger whom I don't know looked down at me accusing me for faking disability. Long walk to gate wasn't easy by myself and ran out of breath, gave my writing note to let the boarding agent that I requires a front row seating that gave me enough room for my leg, not the disability for being deaf. They let me sit on front. By the time when my plane landed at MDW, another long walk to baggage waiting area and my brother picked me up. What do I think? It is the same as usual.

Yes those taxes are refundable on a points ticket just be sure you select the refund option not the hold for future use option or it will be a credit. -Blake

Regarding the credit, yes, you should be able to cancel the original reservation which will result in a refund of the points and taxes, then rebook the flight at the lower price. My experience with cancelling points reservations is the taxes are refunded back to the method of payment. The points will refund immediately so you can rebook immediately. The refund of the taxes may take a day or two to post so as long as you don't mind that you should be good to go. Keep in mind, if you purchased EarlyBird Check-In and cancel you will forfeit that purchase. You may have the same luck getting a refund of the difference in taxes if you do a change flight and rebook the same flight, but I don't have personal experience with that option. Doing a change flight process would keep EarlyBird on the reservation. --TheMiddleSeat

To give you the best chance to all sit together, yes, you should probably purchase EarlyBird since your kids are too old to family board. If you don't, and get later boarding positions, Southwest Passengers are generally understanding and you could probably get a couple to move seats so at least each of your kids can sit next to a parent. Since this is the first time your kids are flying, depending on the length, they can get antsy. Especially since Southwest now offers more free inflight entertainment, download the app ahead of time so you can watch tv, movies, etc. Have a great trip!

@DancingDavidE, I see your point. If people buy EBCI anyway and they still get mid B, there could be even more disgruntlement at the airport. People who are already angry about the pre-boarders could really ramp up the anger.

@Fransoc,
Thanks for coming to the Community and posting about your experience. I think you got some really good insight and information from other Community Members about how to get your best shot at an early boarding position. We want you to enjoy traveling with us, and I hope there will be another opportunity for that in the future. It was not appropriate for our Representative to respond to your questions with sarcasm, and I'm really sorry that happened. It's reasonable that you would be left with a bad taste in your mouth, but I can assure you we appreciate your business and the expectation we have for ourselves is that we are serving our Customers with friendliness and warmth.
I'm closing the comments on this thread as the conversation has started to veer a little off course.

I understand your frustration with the connecting flight not being held. Sometimes Southwest is able to do that and sometimes not because all those people on your connecting flight may have had connections to make later on and if they delayed the flight, those people would miss their connections. I am glad to hear that you were offered the voucher; that could turn out to be a free flight somewhere. Either way, this was definitely a frustrating experience and I'm sure your next one will be better. Happy travels!

No, if you are flying on a ticket purchased with points you won't earn any points (toward Companion Pass, Tier status, or otherwise).

@chgoflyer wrote: Buying BS solely for the boarding benefit makes no sense when you can pay $30-$50 at the gate for Upgraded Boarding. (Or are A-List, which offers almost as good of a boarding position.) Most people who buy BS do so for the refundability, and/or the point earning bonus. Pretty rare for me personally, the main times I have done this was for last-minute travel and it doesn't make much sense to buy Anytime fare when BS is available for more points and perks for relatively little extra money. If the incremental cost over the WGA fare is small then I would buy it. (Besides having the refundability which is nice too.) If there are cheaper WGA tickets I go for that in general though. Refundability doesn't matter much to me since I fly monthly or so, I can reuse travel funds fairly quickly, and I wouldn't ever have so many canceled flights that it would be overwhelming. My travel tends to be pretty predictable.

If neither of the other two suggestions works, you should contact customer relations and they'll get you taken care of. Sometimes there are issues and travel funds don't process correctly and customer relations needs to correct it.

@garymichelson1 You might call reservations and could also try calling group reservations (if your not successful by calling reservations then try calling the group desk) and see if they have a way to add it before the flight I was successful on one group reservation In the past and not successful on another group reservation (maybe someone new who didn't know how to do it or a policy change) I know you can get points after travel is complete by requesting past flight credit. Of course if you can't get the RR number added before the flight you can always try to add it at the gate and at a minimum they should let you board between A and B groups even if they can't add the number as long as they could verify your A List. On the one group reservation I was on where the number couldn't be added they just stamped XT on my boarding pass and I was able to board between A and B groups no problem even with it not showing my A List. hope it works out for you!
