It should also be noted that Southwest does not run the hotel booking program, it merely links to a hotel booking engine run by a third party company. I think it's booking.com? Anyway, just like Chase uses points to entice customers, the third party hotel company uses points to entice people to book hotels. --TheMiddleSeat

This is the #1 confusion with Early Bird - despite automatically receiving a boarding position 36 hours ahead of the flight, you still have to "check in" at the 24 hour mark to receive your boarding pass and save it to your phone / print it / etc. You can check in any time in the 24 hours before your flight, and that's the true benefit, because your boarding position was already assigned to you ahead of everyone else trying to checking in at < 24 hours. --Jessica

@dfwskier wrote: Flight prices for the time period are much higher than for late August (at least for the routes I looked at). Southwest will reduce those prices at some point because it will sell no tickets at that level. My guess is it will reduce prices to the late August level or maybe even lower. Why? Very few people fly during that time. It's a dead season. For example, the best DAL / MDW price for late August is $79. The lowest price for the same flight starting mid September - using the discount code - is $80 Of course you can book, and if the price drops. you can change your flight, and pocket a travel fund. I will wait until my expected price drop for the time period happens. @dfwskier are you sure about that? When is this expected "price drop" supposed to happen? I typically go to Vegas around Halloween, which is right in line with the sale. Flight prices in Oct were always somewhat reasonable/normal (if you consider $200 one way normal which I do these days) - Oct 29 had a sale price of $136, so I grabbed that before the sale ended. Now that flight is $218, and that's the cheap one. The rest are $300-$400. Going home on Nov 1, the cheapest flight is now $361. Should have booked it when it was on sale at/around $200-ish, but I hesitated ... Nov 2 some are in the $200-$250 range, so I'll probably get one of those before they go up more. I don't anticipate them going down, but hey, maybe they will lol. I also debated going to Florida (FLL) for a day and then heading out to Vegas on 10/30 ... those flights with the sale were around $100 and going to Vegas was *under* $100, one option was just $75 ... then they went up the last day of the sale and now those flights are hundreds more. Shouldn't have hesitated. Oh well lol. If the flights do go down I can always book them later. --Jessica

You could book your companion's trip with points. Then it is easy to cancel (and get your points back) and add the companion in case the flight might sell out. When you call to change your companion on your companion pass, you can have the agent make the changes for the flights for your wife.

I book hotels almost exclusively through Southwest so I can get the RR points - I've gotten as much as 8,000 points for a 3 night stay once! In my experience it can take up to 8 weeks for them to post, and there aren't really any workarounds for that except for waiting for them to post to your account. --Jessica

@Magwebb33 here's the click sequence I'd follow if I needed to get documentation/audit the points (all on a desktop computer rather than on a mobile device): On the main Chase account screen near where it says "Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards", click "See details" Click "See rewards history" Click on each of the appropriate time periods. I'm *guessing* that based on what you've posted you should see all of the activity that Chase shows you've earned to get to your expected points total. For each time period you should see labels like "+ 2X Pts for Southwest purchases" -and- "+ Points earned on all other purchases" -and- "+ New Cardmember Bonus". Hopefully you see all of the points you think were earned. Very important, you should also see an entry for each time period labeled "- Total Rapid Rewards transf. to Southwest" If you see all of the points on the Chase account then so far so good, you have confirmation the points were earned according to Chase. If you don't see any points there then that's where to start. I'm *assuming* the points were earned on the Chase side and that you see the lines with points transferred to Southwest. Now go to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account. After logging in click "My Account" then click the "Recent Activity" side bar area. Click "View all activity". You should see the corresponding points posted with the label "Rapid Rewards Credit Card..." with the corresponding date. Also take a look at the physical Southwest credit card. The back of the card should have "RR #########" printed on the back, that number should match the RR# at the very top of the Southwest site when you are logged in (look in the top left corner). If the number on the credit card does not match the online account number then that is a good indicator that the points went to the wrong place. Hopefully this helps!

I agree with @PDFelter however if they are unable to help over the phone then I would watch the flight to see if it has a seat open up. if a seat doesn't open before your departure day then I would show up a little earlier on departure day to the airport and they should be able to help at the full service ticket counter since you have up until an hour before the flight to add the companion. Hope it works out easily! Blake

HERE'S A SIMPLE AND EASY SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM: When a passenger asks for a pre-boarding pass, the agent should ask him or her if they need physical assistance getting down the jetway? If not, then simply ask them to go ahead and board with their group. Interestingly, I experienced this being done in Denver several months ago. I was not well at the time and asked the agent at the gate for a pre-boarding pass just to test it to see how easily this could be done. The agent asked me this question which I thought was courteous but also direct and to the point. I had to admit that, no, I would not have any trouble making my way down the jetway. I honestly thought that Southwest must be training their gate agents to ask this question. However, subsequently I have seen the same long lineup of people pre-boarding who look like the picture of health. There will always be people who are not truthful when asked this question. But most will respond like I did and board with their group.
