Earlier this summer, Southwest Airlines unveiled a series called Sites and Sounds that was created in partnership with Luck Reunion and the Luck Journal. This three-part series highlights musicians and the destinations that have inspired them. Each episode features a different artist and takes the audience to their hometown.
The first episode of Sites and Sounds brought Nashville-based singer-songwriter Nikki Lane to Lukas Nelson's hometown of Maui. Lukas gave an insider's look, taking Lane to the surf spots, restaurants, and the venue that shaped his career and life at an early age.
In Episode Two, we’re excited to feature another member of the Nelson family, Micah, as he leads singer-songwriter Sunny War through Austin, Texas. Micah was born in Austin and lived there until he was eight years old, before relocating to Hawaii. When he was 17, Micah returned to the capital of the Lone Star State, where he’s focused on his music career.
Sunny lived in Austin for a short time, and during her visit with Micah, she experienced some of his favorite places. From Juiceland, to Torchy’s Tacos, to Hopscotch, which is a pop-up interactive art installation (and the location of Micah Nelson’s band Particle Kid’s newly-released music video), Micah lead Sunny the places that he enjoys most about Austin.
The final episode of Sites and Sounds, Episode Three, will showcase an artist’s most-loved places in the Bay Area when it debuts later this year.
Visit Southwest.fm/SitesandSounds to learn more about the series. You’ll get an in-depth look at each artist, what makes their hometown special, and how that destination has influenced their music.

Music can be an escape. A means of connecting with ourselves and with others. A discovery of uncharted territory. Travel, and the places that inspire us, are similarly impactful.
Seeing how both music and travel play such a role in the lives of the people who make great art—and the people who love it—has been one of the greatest joys of helping build the Luck Reunion. We have the chance to witness firsthand as artists journey down memory lane ... remembering the first time they picked up a guitar; the time they hit the road for their first gig; and the people they met along the way.
Every story starts somewhere, and the new Sites & Sounds content series, presented in partnership by Southwest and Luck Reunion, will showcase the crossover between destinations and music: the places and sounds that helped shape the artists we love.
The three-part series will shine a light on destinations that have bred a culture of creativity, inviting the audience to experience unique locations through the artist's lens. Each episode will feature an artist in their hometown who will welcome a creative friend to tag along and experience the spots and people that contributed to their creative path.
Episode One welcomes Nashville's edgy sweetheart, singer-songwriter Nikki Lane, to Lukas Nelson's hometown of Maui. Nelson gives a unique insider's glance at Southwest's newest destination: taking Lane to the surf spots, restaurants, and the venue that shaped his career and life at an early age.
Nelson discusses the impact of travel on his creative work, saying, “Being on an airplane is a good time to write for me because I tend to have a melody in my head. So when I'm in the air and am away from it all, I can focus in and get that general melody and lyrics down. Then I can go anywhere and finish it.”
Lukas' friends, singer Lily Meola and her brother, surfer and fisherman Matt Meola, and many more join the episode and give a real glimpse into the aloha spirit.
The second episode (coming soon) will bring Lukas' brother, Micah Nelson (currently performing as Particle Kid), back to his Austin, Texas, stomping grounds. The younger Nelson welcomes his good friend and amazing artist Sunny War to Texas' capital city where they explore his favorite haunts.
The final episode of Sites and Sounds, episode three, will highlight an artist’s most-loved places in the Bay Area when it debuts later this summer.
Sites and Sounds will consist of three episodes, and will be available for music fans and our Customers to enjoy by visiting Southwest.fm/SitesandSounds.

Over the past couple weeks, Southwest Employees across the country have gone above and beyond aiding in relief efforts for southeast Texas communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey. In the midst of it all, we were reminded that humans are not the only victims of natural disasters.
Southwest teamed up with San Diego’s Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) to help a local Houston organization, Operation Pets Alive! (OPA). Southwest operated an animal relief flight and flew more than 60 animals from Austin to San Diego that had been relocated from Houston shelters to allow OPA to make room for families' displaced pets.
A total of 64 animals boarded a retiring -300 aircraft and flew from Austin to San Diego. Because the aircraft was set to retire in Victorville, we didn’t have to worry about deep-cleaning the aircraft after this incredibly furry, and somewhat stinky, animal rescue flight.
The animal rescue flight was truly a Team effort—Network Operations routed the aircraft; Ground Operations determined the special weight and balances; regulations were followed to keep our furry Friends safe; our Austin Station coordinated special TSA clearances, carefully loaded our precious cargo on board, and secured the crates in the seats; our Flight Crew got us safely to San Diego and soothed the animals in the air; and our San Diego Team swiftly coordinated our arrival and met the animals off the plane with vans for transportation to Helen Woodward Animal Center. This is something we should all be proud of!
This was Southwest's second animal relief flight working alongside Helen Woodward Animal Center to transport shelter animals out of areas devastated by natural disasters. In 2012, Southwest was able to transport more than 40 animals from Newark to San Diego after Hurricane Sandy.
The shelter animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey will remain under the care of Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego and will be available for adoption in the following weeks. If you’d like to make a difference in your hometown, consider volunteering at your local animal shelter—you might even find your FUR-ever soul mate!
An update!

Southwest recently partnered with SpinMedia on a campaign to promote our new Los Angeles to Liberia/Guanacaste, Costa Rica service. We welcomed Singer/Songwriter VÉRITÉ to perform a Live at 35® from LAX-LIR and to explore and discover the beauty of Costa Rica.
This is the repurposed feature from Spin.com.
From Here to There: Exploring Costa Rica with Singer/Songwriter VÉRITÉ
“It’s about exploration and meeting different people.”
By Drew Fortune
Waking up at the El Mangroove Hotel, Papagayo Bay
Los Angeles via New York pop deconstructionist VÉRITÉ is out of her comfort zone. Based simply on the 25-year-old’s swaths of synths, digital beats and layered vocals, it’s easy to dismiss VÉRITÉ —a.k.a. Kelsey Byrne — as just another Internet sensation who hit #1 on the Hype Machine. By taking the time to analyze the lyrics, the listener is rewarded with a wisdom that belies her age, a cynicism harkening back to Charles Bukowski, and wordplay evoking Oscar Wilde. A pragmatic city girl and self-described “slave to her calendar,” VÉRITÉ is ensconced in black. Our small crew arrived in Liberia — Costa Rica’s capital and largest city — last night on Southwest Airlines from Los Angeles. Golden sun beats down on VÉRITÉ as the sweet smelling orchid breeze casually tussles her bleached blond hair. At breakfast, she refuses that we adhere to our carefully planned day itinerary. “This trip is really spontaneous, which is a change for me,” she says with a nervous grin. “I don’t want solid plans. It’s about exploration and meeting different people.”
After finishing a breakfast of fresh watermelon, papaya and excellent coffee, VÉRITÉ announces that she’s ready to start the adventure. Under her breath, she whispers to me, almost as if she can’t believe her good fortune, “This is truly special.” Our day shuttle was seemingly assembled before the invention of shocks. The roads alternate between paved and rough gravel, and our driver Maria has to make sudden, whiplash stops for jaywalking iguanas. Our 20-minute drive winds us up and down dormant volcanoes, providing ocean views of postcard beauty. Mid-April is the dry season, and that’s not hyperbole: The normally expansive rainforest greens are charred and arid, the distinct smell of burnt leaves stinging our nostrils.
Shopping and snacking in Playa del Coco
All that changes when our shuttle arrives at Playa del Coco, a tourist hotspot littered with local merchants hawking blankets, handcrafted bowls and cheeky hats. The vibe is similar to an airport newsstand, complete with magnets and T-shirts emblazoned with the local catchphrase “Pura Vida.” It’s hot, somewhere in the low 90s, and VÉRITÉ takes a moment to enjoy the sweet nectar of coconut water, chopped right on site with a machete. After a quick stop for lunch at Coco Beach (I had the sautéed octopus while VÉRITÉ had the tuna on grilled pineapple), we pause for a moment on a busy, dusty street. She hesitates. We had numerous activities tentatively planned (ATVs, guided tours, etc), so there’s no shortage of things to do. She doesn’t want to play that game. She squints, and I can almost see the clinical synapses at war with the creative right side of her brain. “Wherever you are,” she says with a monster grin. “Be there.”
Snorkeling and exploring in Culebra Bay
With her approval, we wander. The hot sand feels good on our feet as we cruise the beach. Vendors try and sell us lacquered rosewood bowls and ornate seashells. Suddenly, we’re approached by a short man brandishing a fishing pole. He’s local (judging by his mahogany tan and accent). “My name is Cappy,” he beams. “Short for Captain! Today, I take you on the greatest adventure of your life!” For three hours, Cappy will take us fishing, snorkeling and rainforest exploring. “Sure!” VÉRITÉ beams. A half hour later we’re rocking in Cappy’s 25-foot fishing boat, wondering where the life jackets are, and more importantly, if we’ll survive this three-hour tour. Eventually, we arrive at an isolated white sand beach and dive off the boat, exploring mangroves while listening to howler monkeys in the distance.
After exploring our private island, we climb back aboard Cappy’s boat, the “White Whale,” and head back to shore. The waves are getting stronger, but Cappy insists we jump in for a snorkel. VÉRITÉ has never snorkeled and looks a little sea sick at the prospect. Suddenly, she rises and plops right in, like a tiny seal off a pier. After her snorkeling adventure, she props herself up on the bow, her head thrown back as she sucks in rays and life in general. Back on the vessel, we see a beautiful spotted stingray dart alongside the boat. I nudge her gently, asking about her day. “I got to do a bunch of things I’ve never done before, and see a bunch of things I’d never seen,” she expresses animatedly. “I had never been snorkeling. Before diving in, the thought that a shark could come struck me. For once, it didn’t matter. I was just lost in the moment.”

January 7 was a very exciting day for us here at Southwest Airlines as we celebrated the tenth anniversary of our service at Denver International Airport. You might be thinking, ten years doesn’t seem very long, considering that Southwest turns 45 this June. But what makes this city a real show-stopper for us is the fact that in just ten short years Denver has become Southwest’s fourth busiest city operation and the fastest growing in our 45-year history. Now that’s something of which we’re very proud!
We certainly didn’t accomplish this overnight. The amazing Mile-High community put its trust in our airline*, helping us grow from 13 flights a day serving three cities in 2006, to nearly 180 flights a day serving more than 55 destinations domestically, and carrying more people to and from Denver than any other airline. We’ve even added service to Cancun, Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, all in the past year.
A group of Denver original Employees with Southwest Airlines CEO, Gary Kelly. Photograph provided courtesy of Denver International Airport.
Knowing where our Customers want to fly is just one piece of the story, but understanding what they find important, and what fuels local passion is the piece of the equation we take to heart. For the past five years, we’ve partnered with Downtown Denver Partnership to bring back the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park for the holiday season, allowing friends, families, and visitors to come together and enjoy the holiday beauty of downtown. You’ll also see Southwest supporting the community as the Official Airline of the Denver Nuggets, as well as the airline partner of one of live music’s most inspiring venues, Red Rocks Amphitheater.
It’s been our honor to support the greater Denver community during the past ten years. Our nearly 3,000 Employees who call Denver home look forward to sharing our unique hospitality with you on your next flight to or from the great state of Colorado.
* As measured by the Department of Transportation O&D Survey for the twelve months ended March 31, 2015 based on domestic originating passengers boarded. O&D stands for Origin and Destination.

The Bluebird Café is one of Country Music’s most historic and iconic music venues. Since opening its doors in 1982, Nashville’s Bluebird Café has been a venue where up-and-coming songwriters and artists rise to fame and build their careers. From the novice to the star, all levels of songwriters are welcomed and supported—sounds a little like our very own airline!
Musicians and Songwriters such as Kathy Mattea, Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, James House, Trisha Yearwood, Keith Urban, and numerous others have had career-defining moments in the intimate, 90-seat listening room, and chart-topping hits are heard side-by-side soon-to-be hits.
Taping into community passions is a goal for Southwest; so this year, it only makes sense to become the Official Airline of the Nashville Songwriters Association International and the Bluebird Café, as our little way to support the amazing music community. We have the opportunity to partner with these powerful brands, furthering the connection of our world-famous hospitality with the world-famous country music community that is so fostered in Nashville.
And for those fans of ABC’s hit show, Nashville, we certainly have a treat for you!
On September 21, Southwest and the Bluebird Café will take the sounds of ABC’s Nashville to 35,000 feet with an intimate performance onboard a Southwest flight from Nashville to New York City.
As we near the season premiere of Nashville on September 23, where the set often lands this beloved cast at the Bluebird Café, we’re excited to welcome Charles Esten (Deacon) to join Songwriter Kim Richey, and the country music duo Striking Matches, to take some of your favorite Nashville tunes Live at 35®.
Once this Nashville-inspired flight lands in New York City, we’ll take to the stage at the Southwest Porch at Bryant Park, to give visitors a taste of an iconic Bluebird Café “In the Round” performance, a format made famous at the club where the performers take turns playing their original music, sharing the stories behind the songs, and accompanying each other instrumentally and with backing vocals.
As we can’t share details on what specific flight our Live at 35 will take place on, the performance at the Southwest Porch is open to the public and we encourage fans of ABC’s Nashville to stop by for a chance to hear some of their favorite songs from the show.
The Southwest Porch at Bryant Park
Monday, September 21 – 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
Not in New York? Don’t worry; we’ll have the performance from the flight and photos from the Southwest Porch to share with you on our social channels very soon!

Indie Rock band, The Black Cadillacs, recently traveled to Memphis to find inspiration for the last song on their new, self-titled EP. What happened from there was an experience only a state rooted in music and an airline reaching new heights could offer. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development and Southwest Airlines teamed up to give passengers from Dallas to Memphis on Flight 3664 the ultimate travel and music experience with a live performance at 35,000 feet.
For this up-and-coming band based out of Knoxville, Tennessee, the opportunity has increased awareness of their music. "The response has been tremendous already,” said Will Horton, lead vocals in the band. "People seem to be really excited about the #LiveAt35 series and we just hope it continues to spread the word about our band and our great state!” Not only did Memphis help them finish their album, but for two of the band members, Matthew and Philip, it’s home.
“For the entire band, this city will always be a special place,” says Horton, From the warmth and hospitality of the people, to the culture, music, and food, we always have a great time in Memphis.”
Southwest is adding to that culture with new nonstop service from Dallas to Memphis starting just last month and our ongoing #LiveAt35 series marrying music and travel. Both the state of Tennessee and Southwest have the common goal of providing great experiences to anyone who steps into Tennessee or onto our planes. And this flight was evidence of that, reflects the band “the passengers had a great reaction to our music and were very welcoming.”
It was an all-around entertaining flight, filled with phones in the air and bobbing heads back and forth to catch a glimpse of the performance. Many passengers onboard were turned into instant fans, even showing up for a continuation of the party on ground later that night at B.B. King’s downtown on Beale Street. For the band, "The best moment was seeing passengers from the flight at B.B. King's that night. That made the whole experience seem really special.”
We can’t wait to follow along with the Black Cadillacs as their band continues to take flight.

It’s that time of year again, as Guillermo and the entire crew from Jimmy Kimmel Live! head to Austin, TX, for a week of live tapings. If there’s one airline that knows a thing or two about Texas, I think we can all agree Southwest has it in the bag. We also think we know what it takes to make sure Guillermo is a satisfied Customer, as hospitality is top on our list.

To kick off the #DestinationDragons Tour, Southwest Airlines is celebrating with a special “Twitter Scavenger Hunt” for the Imagine Dragons super-fans out there!
In each of the four cities on the tour (Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Atlanta), we will be stashing an Imagine Dragons vinyl album. The first five people to find the vinyl album – who are at least 18 years old, have their valid picture ID, show the Tweet received, and live within the U.S. – are entitled to the following:
Two tickets to that city’s #DestinationDragons show, including VIP access where available (Transportation to/from the concert is not included.)
One signed SMOKE+MIRRORS CD
Southwest Airlines Destination Dragons Goodie Bag
AND the very first winner will also receive a Meet & Greet with the band before the show!
How will you know where to search?
Follow us on Twitter @SouthwestAir where we will tweet out a picture of each “Twitter Scavenger Hunt” location. Don’t worry, it will be a public, fairly recognizable place (although we can’t make it TOO easy for you). As soon as our Tweet goes out, the hunt is on! Once you arrive at the specified location, look for the Imagine Dragons vinyl album we’ve stashed. If you’re one of the first five people to find it, look for our Southwest Representative who will be standing by to verify your ID and award your prize package.
Below is the information regarding the dates and cities of our “Twitter Scavenger Hunt” events, as well as the official rules. The exact time and location in each city will be a secret until the hunt is on, so stay tuned to @SouthwestAir on Twitter for your opportunity to participate!
Day One: Friday, February 20, 2015 in Los Angeles, California
Day Two: Saturday, February 21, 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah (please note, the hunt will take place in Salt Lake City, UT but the concert is in Provo, UT)
Day Three: Monday, February 23, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada
Day Four: Wednesday, February 25, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia
Important! Winners will be required to: (1) show valid government-issued identification; (2) show the tweet received; (3) be eligible to participate in, and win, the contest; and (4) promptly read, sign, and agree to winner documentation or the prize will be automatically forfeited (at Sponsor's sole discretion). Winner Affidavit of Eligibility/Liability and Publicity Release forms must be submitted with the winner and their guest's full legal name in order to be eligible to receive any prize. See contest rules below for full contest details.

Southwest recently had the pleasure of spending some time with the Brooklyn-based band, American Authors, and we couldn’t be more excited to share their recent journeys with our readers.
As Official Airline of the event ‘Live In The Vineyard,’ Southwest Airlines has behind-the-scenes access to a number of artists who are on the bill to perform an acoustic set at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, CA. At the November event, we spent some time with the guys—Zach, James, Matt, and Dave—from American Authors, where we talked about their EP which is currently out and the anticipated release of their album in early 2014. They also talked about how much they love being based in Brooklyn and how often they will walk around the streets of New York playing music, which led to our very own private acoustic performance on the streets of Downtown Napa!
We quickly learned that these guys are known to play in some pretty untraditional places, so it only seemed fitting to have them perform a Live at 35 concert at 35,000 feet in the sky! They were excited to add a plane to their list of unique performance venues, joking that the next stop is playing in space—American Authors on the moon!
Check out our fun journey with the American Authors!

It was a beautiful night in New York City as the smooth harmony of acclaimed a cappella group, Straight No Chaser, floated through the park. New Yorkers strolling past found themselves drawn in as Atlantic Records recording artists Straight No Chaser performed live at the Southwest Porch at Bryant Park. SNC Fans and special guests packed into the intimate space of the Southwest Porch, anticipating the arrival of the group. I have to say, it's not every day that you find yourself in the midst of ten guys in matching suits serenading you to the tunes of such artists like Adele, Gotye, and Sara Bareilles. It was definitely a moment to remember. Southwest took the opportunity to pull Straight No Chaser aside after the show to get their thoughts on their new album, Under the Influence, and what excites them as they kick off their summer tour.
