The only way that Wanna Get Away tickets would be refundable is if Southwest cancels the flights that caused the travel funds to be issued. Then they would be refundable to the payment method used to buy the tickets

Thank @SWFlyer007 for your offer. We are still here in Fort Lauderdale. To make the matter worse, out JetBlue flight was also canceled, Flight 2080, they moved us to next flight 1880 that canceled as well. It was nuts. Airlines take no responsibility when it's weather-related, and I promise you it had nothing to do with the weather. In reality, all other airlines canceled because all the pilots were timed -out, and took on more flights due to demand from southwest cancellation. All 5 of us were there till 5 am, and had to find hotel from 6 am till checkout 11 am for $498. Jetblue said their policy is not to reimburse or give out hotel vouchers. In fairness, Southwest did book us back now and only charged us what i paid originally for my return ticket - so that's positive. Hope everyone else in this situation got back home safely.

Let's look at the rationale about why a return flight would be cancelled. It's really pretty simple.
If you no show for the outbound flight, how can the airline expect you to actually take the return flight? I mean if you don't get to the destination city, how can you depart from that city?
Now I've never had that happen to me because almost all reservations I make are one way reservations.

I've learned to NEVER SAY NEVER. But you've been provided with data on the "unlikelihood" of that happening. The crash recently is tragic, and I'm sure that as soon as it happened that all pilots and airlines went into, "let's get serious again mode," and are checking planes left and right. I flew this past Sunday where we were delayed for over 1 and 1/2 hours be fix a malfunction of a door. Let's just hope these inspections contiune. Flying is still safer than driving.

Thanks for your feedback on my post. A couple of comments to clarify:
Yes - i see now that duplicate booking is against SWA rules. I never knew this and in all of my years traveling have never had a reservation cancelled without notice by the airline. On the SWA website - the 45page Contract of Carrier document says they can cancel a duplicate reservation without notice on page 9, section 2.a.2.iii.f.i - so SWA was within their "rights".
I still question - is this the way to treat the customer? If they can write an algorithm to find the duplicate - you would think they could create similar logic to communicate with the customer. I received an email that his reservation had been cancelled at 1:48pm for his 4:55pm flight. He arrived at the airport at 2pm....so he had 12-min "notice". He had a two hour drive in 10" of snow to get to DIA - so that is why he is there 3 hours early....
I will also add that while the 12-17-year old traveler is not a service/program where SWA assumes responsibility - you are not allowed to book these reservations on a mobile device as they require the parent to fill out a form with communication/contact details etc. directly on swa.com. So his reservation was clearly flagged as a minor traveling alone. So - not sure why they force you to go through that step if they aren't going to contact you - but assume it is just a waiver of liability or some other legal detail....
In any case - I have gone out of my way to travel this airline over the years (even forgoing direct flights on competitors) but not sure they are going out of their way for me. Possibly it is just a post-COVID thing with not enough resources, or too much growth, or just an isolated situation.

Masks are not fun, but the requirement is only a big deal if you want it to be, in my opinion. Planes in general are full, although Thursday night my flight from Hobby was maybe only half full, stretched out and slept across three seats for 2 hours.
Things are pretty much business as usual, safe travels!

No - once a fund is issued as a travel credit, the fund will remain valid for travel on Southwest only and will be honored until its expiration date, usually a year from the date of purchase. During early 2020, Southwest did extend the expiration date for travel credits, although such extension was stopped a while ago.

I appreciate your compassion. It seems to be quite the foreign concept to some people that taking accountability for their mistakes should be a standard of practice. You seem to be the only person who would also be up in arms if thousands of dollars of your personal items were essentially stolen with no regard.
i was nothing but patient and kind and gracious for the first month- but everyone has their tipping point- so to answer someone else’s question- I absolutely reached out to my attorney (to whom I pay a yearly retainer FYI) because it seems as though being quiet and understanding doesn’t really get the ear of Southwest Airlines.
again- hope this never happens to any of you who made the useless responses- and that your first (post cancer) vacation isn’t obliterated by an airlines negligence and disregard.

It's a mechanical issue, what do you expect Southwest or any airline to do? It's not like they just have spare aircraft sitting around ready to go. Would you have preferred they just ignored the issue and took off anyway? That seems like a bad idea.
If you really want to escalate your whining to Southwest you'll need to contact them directly. Use the contact us link at the bottom of this page and send a message.

Easy answer. Islip is a tiny airport. Very tiny, in fact.
La Guardia, especially combined with JFK and maybe Newark (NJ), makes up some of the largest, busiest airports in the entire country.
There is no comparison. Apples and broccoli.

Wanted to put it out there - do you think that Newark (EWR) is on Southwest's list of destinations in the future? Without it, they have no destinations serving New Jersey (other than LGA which can be a headache to get to from the Garden State).
You could always tell SW that you'd like to see the service restored by clicking on "contact us" below..

Thanks, everyone for your help! I finally got through on the phone to SWA. They had sent me a confirmation email with incorrect info that did not match the info on their website. It took the phone customer service rep five emails to remedy it, but she finally got it to go through with the correct times. It created lots of confusion, but the bottom line is, there is no connection in Columbus and never was. Again, thank you to all who cared enough to spend time helping me with this.

can 1 of the 3 travelers get a luv voucher
If you cancel 1 person off a reservation they would have a travel fund valid for a year from when the original booking was made or oldest travel fund applied to the booking (if that applies to this passenger) no LUV voucher would be issued for someone cancelling on their own.

Travel funds can only be used towards the purchase of Southwest flights and the travel must complete before expiration.
Expired travel funds can be converted to a LUV voucher within 6 months of expiration. Each travel fund is reduced in value by $100 and is good for 6 months after the conversion. To request this after the funds expire use the contact us link at the bottom of this page and send a message with the confirmation numbers and passenger names associated with the travel funds.

Your right. I realize the rules are clearly stated. I did cancel the ticket due to the excessive price of this ticket (at least a 450% increase). This is well beyond the increase in oil. The President warned that companies not gouge the public during this inflationary time. I guess Southwest is ignoring this as it isn’t a “mandate”.
lol, prices change due to LOTS of factors, the price of fuel being just one of them. Demand for travel is WAY up and when demand goes up prices go up too.

Hi!
Southwest usually compensates passengers for delays that resulted from incidents like this.
You're lucky in that you may have been one of the few passengers who would witness something like this, as this is not something that Southwest is known for. Don't let a single outlier experience affect your overall view of the company. People aren't perfect, and sometimes, things like this do happen.
I'm sure Southwest will follow up on this issue and appropriate action will be taken. You are right in that this is not what Southwest is known for.
Safe travels!

Sorry that you felt 'cheated'!
The travel industry is becoming more and more confusing these days. While there may not have been a need to read the fine print before, it's especially important today. If it helps, I think Southwest is the best when it comes to not having their customers feel 'cheated' - out of many carriers from the US, Southwest is the most straightforward through their Transfarency policy and while the name 'Business Select' could be confusing, I'm sure when you were prompted to upgrade, the kiosk listed what you would be getting in return (ie upgraded boarding, drink coupon, 12 points/dollar, etc), not stating anything about seating.
Southwest's customer service is kind of swamped right now so I do not know if you would get a response, but I would recommend emailing them or tweeting them about your experience. While they may not be able to offer compensation, it's always good to reach out (like what you are doing on this forum) and let the company/other travelers know so that they can be informed.

Yep! If by finalized, you mean that all routes/flights are planned, then the answer is yes! Everything is scheduled to run the way it is supposed to unless service is delayed, diverted, or canceled, which in today's age, cannot be anticipated far in advance.
If you're asking if scheduled service may be disrupted/delayed/canceled due to weather or other operational factors, then the answer is also yes.
Safe travels!

Hello
That is very interesting. I had the same issue, different destination. Was going to Jamica in Feb 2020 had to cancel due to covid. Travel funds expired Feb 2021 and was told that my travel funds couldn't be extended to Sept 2022. I was told could let expire and would deduct $100 and only have 6 months to use. If you don't mind me asking how did you get them to extend to the date of Sept 2022?
Likely because they cancelled between 3/1/20 and 9/7/20. People that did that got travel funds with a 9/7/22 expiration date.
