Learned the hard way that this isn’t true. We are traveling with a $6500 viola in a case and were forced to check it at the gate. We begged to gate check it, my daughter in tears, and were refused. There are 4 other musicians on the flight that suffered the same fate. The agent claimed flight was full and we had to check. We understand but why refuse to gate check? It felt personal and mean spirited. This hasn’t happened in my 30 years flying with Southwest. Shame. Perhaps a layover in other areas such as San Juan, Puerto Rico or other countries such as Aruba or Costa Rica (San Jose) would work. It may not be necessary to be THE final destination for the travelers. I suppose this assumes it is alright to fly over any other countries necessary such as Colombia, Venezuela, etc. to get to destinations such as Santiago, Buenos Aires, or Rio de Janeiro. ... I’d prefer no assigned seats because if I can avoid certain people when I’m boarding if I want ( of course if I’m the first to sit then I can’t but I can change seats if I feel uncomfortable) and I also love sitting in the back with a window or aisle depending what I’m feeling that day. Here we are in 2024 and still having this issue. I use yahoo and get emails like the confirmation for creating this account. But won't get any confirmation emails. The SW help person I spoke with before said it was an issue with Yahoo and had me switch to gmail. But then when they merged two different rapid rewards accounts, it moved it back to Yahoo and now I'm back to not getting emails. Yes - I could swap it to gmail again but I'd prefer to keep all my flight info at one email address. ... View more

We see people gaming most any system put in place. This is just one such example. I have been in line with a veteran of war that could easily legitimately qualify for pre board but he would not have it. He was pretty outraged at the people he saw clearly gaming the policy. I recently read that it could take Southwest two years to gear up for redeye flights for issues related to crew contracts.  New pilot and flight attendant contracts were just settled recently.  Surely this issue, which was proposed last year already by the company, were addressed in these contracts.  What could possibly take two more years?  There are already flights carrying over into the following day (DEN-ATL 2100-0155) in the schedule.  Common guys; get this done! ...
