My mother-in-law is a teacher, and my father-in-law is a college professor. I've been around them long enough to know what passion for education looks like (they've definitely got it). This year, I've been on quite a journey with them, as they navigated both the latter half of last school year and the beginning of this year.
Early hypothesis: it's tough out there.
Present conclusion: it is, indeed, tough out there.
We're no strangers to this fact, in the airline industry, but it's a different dynamic, from vocation to vocation. At Southwest Airlines, we believe in connecting People and championing communities. We believe that community is more than a place – it’s the Heart of what brings us together. Although we have made small strides to assist with creative online learning through our virtual Adopt-A-Pilot curriculum, we know that there are teachers taking this challenge head on and inspiring their kids in innovative ways.
As part of our “Wanna Get Away” revival, Southwest has been celebrating teachers since mid-September that have been going the extra mile, by sharing their stories and offering some LUV in the form of Rapid Rewards bonus points.
In honor of World Teachers' Day, October 5, we saw fit to aggregate their stories into this blog, in hopes you'll also celebrate them, and perhaps see fit to seek out teachers in your own lives--past or present--and tell them how much they mean to you. We're all doing our best right now, and spreading a little joy and laughter goes a long way.
Audrianna Williams and Callie Evans - Albany, GA

Have you ever seen two teachers rap separate verses, outlining the changes students could expect when they returned to school? If you watch only one thing today, please let it be this video.
Kimberly Martin and Patricia Dovi - DeLand, FL
Innovation in the classroom has taken on a new meaning during the pandemic. These two teachers from Florida decided to make lemonade out of lemons by converting the socially-distanced school desks into cars, for each student.
Cathy Cluck - Austin, TX and Mike Brown - Oak Forest, IL
Mrs. Cluck Mr. Brown
These two teachers have never met, but great minds think alike! Cathy and Mike separately decided to pack their bags during virtual learning and teach history from some of the places where it happened. Mike taught five classes a day, at 30 minutes each, covering American history during his trek. Similar to Mike, Cathy was able to show her students significant historic sites such as Gettysburg and the Lincoln Memorial.
Last week, Cathy's school district, Eanes ISD, showed up to her classroom to surprise her on our behalf:
@EanesISD and @whschaps, thank you for surprising Cathy! Wish we could've been there, too! pic.twitter.com/leYs2PzCdK
— Southwest Airlines (@SouthwestAir) October 2, 2020
Spoiler alert: Mike was being surprised on the morning this blog post was published.
These teachers went the extra mile, and there are plenty more out there doing some great things with limited resources. Tweet us to let us know about a teacher in your life who deserves some appreciation, including the ones who aren't normally teachers and who find themselves homeschooling while they juggle other things. Above all, know that you're appreciated, and we thank you and LUV you so very much for what you do (and from your undeserving son-in-law, that goes especially for you, Krista and Ed).
Happy World Teachers' Day!

One week from today, Southwest will celebrate an exciting moment in the lives of millions of Americans: a total solar eclipse visible in a coast-to-coast celestial shadow that will temporarily envelop Southwest cities from Portland, OR, to Charleston, SC.
There are several scheduled flights most likely to experience maximum effects of the eclipse on August 21, and we’re bringing Customers on those flights some commemorative flare with special viewing glasses and cosmic cocktails.
"Not to throw too much shade but with 3,857 flights scheduled to operate that day using our all-Boeing 737 fleet, we'll be unmatched in offering hundreds of seats in the air over the continental U.S. that morning with a potential view of the rare sight," said Warren Qualley, Manager Meteorology for Southwest. "We plan to showcase the glow of our everyday Hospitality in a different light on these celebratory flights in our summer flight schedule and our team of Meteorologists is working hard to provide clear viewing* of this solar spectacle from our flights! The next total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. won't occur until April 8, 2024, so don't miss this opportunity!"
Network & Schedule Planners modeled the operational day against projections of the umbra and penumbra--shadows cast by the moon's eclipse of the sun. On August 21, the scheduled Southwest flights with the greatest likelihood of offering those in the air the best view are:
Southwest Flight #1375 departing Seattle-Tacoma at 8:50 a.m. PDT for St. Louis Southwest Flight #1368 departing Portland at 9:05 a.m. PDT for St. Louis Southwest Flight #1969 departing Denver at 9:50 a.m. MDT for Atlanta Southwest Flight #1577 departing Denver at 10:20 a.m. MDT for St. Louis Southwest Flight #301 departing Denver at 10:20 a.m. MDT for Nashville
Not planning on traveling that day? Don’t worry—you can still follow along on the Southwest Facebook page where we’ll be livestreaming the action.
*Looking directly at the sun is never recommended, but one can safely observe an eclipse with specialty-rated solar filters.

The gravity of a Southwest retirement is not lost on me. We all come to work with a sense of pride and ownership, whatever (or wherever) our station at this Company.
Capt. Debby Rihn-Harvey piloted her final Southwest flight on Cinco de Mayo. As you’ll see in the video, it was an emotional experience, and unforgettable for everyone involved (including a mere admirer like me). Capt. Rihn-Harvey’s legacy embodies so many aspects of Southwest. She was not only the 11 th female Pilot hired by Southwest, but Capt. Rihn-Harvey is also responsible for training several of our Pilots at her flight school, and is an award-winning aerobatic Pilot.
Judging by the Facebook comments, Capt. Rihn-Harvey touched many lives so positively and so memorably; I’m honored to have shared a phone call with her. Heck, I’m honored to even call myself her CoHeart.
Of course—embodiment being the theme here—Capt. Rihn-Harvey is Southwest personified. To take nothing away from her well-deserved accomplishments, we’ve all got a bit of Capt. Rihn-Harvey’s qualities in us. That’s why we’re at Southwest. I just hope you’re as motivated to live that way as I am.
The video is meant to pay homage to all Southwest retirees. While the rules might have Capt. Debby Rihn-Harvey unable to sit left on a Southwest flight, gravity will not keep Captain Debby Rihn-Harvey tethered to the ground. Check out the video if you want to feel inspired, and please share it!

TIME: 8:00PM CDT on Sunday, October 11
We’re continuing to use back-up systems around the country to check-in Customers arriving at our airports without printed or mobile boarding passes. Intermittent performance issues continue impacting our in-airport Customer Service technology systems and across our online platforms (Southwest.com, Southwest Mobile App and site).
We have teams working around the country to support getting our Customers and their checked luggage to their destinations tonight; other groups are troubleshooting multiple applications to determine the cause of some technical challenges experienced Sunday which, as of 6:30pm CDT, have delayed approximately 450 flights (out of 3600 scheduled today); other groups are making operational decisions to minimize impacts for those who are checking in for travel tomorrow.
We urge Customers traveling Sunday evening or Monday to visit Southwest.com to check-in and print boarding passes before coming to the airport. We also encourage Customers to arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departures to help minimize delays. Finally, if checking luggage, visit a self-service kiosk adjacent a ticket counter to print bag tags where applicable and present your luggage and identification to Southwest Employees.
We thank our Employees for their tireless efforts to take care of our Customers, and we appreciate our Customers’ patience as we work towards a solution.

This is the moment we've all been anticipating. No more identity indexes or seed explanations; none of that matters now. It's food versus history. Passion for pizza and excitement for an exotic destination. Some in the committee have called this the "battle beyond the border," despite the fact neither of these cities are anywhere near each other (and Chicago's quite obviously nearest Canada, not Mexico).
Those committee members won't be invited back next year.
Without further ado, here is your championship matchup. You must enter via our Facebook page.
Mexico City vs. Chicago
As a reminder, for each matchup you will be able to either “Like” to vote for one destination, or “Share” to vote for another. Throughout the bracket, we will be staffing a team of expert commentators to provide a “basketball-like” analysis on Nuts About Southwest and Facebook.

The committee's seeding process, whether just or unjust, has spoken: the like rules the roost. We Last Four have been chosen, and that means we've crowned four regional champions:
Salt Lake City
Mexico City
Chicago
Panama City Beach
In full disclosure, the committee announced it is currently exploring collusion among cities that have the word "city" in them. Chicago could remain the lone destination untarnished by pre-arranged agreements to vault into the Last Four. Because the rules state the show must go on, however, this will not impact Rounds 3 or 4, but it may impact the winners in future tournaments. Thankfully, our wonderful sponsor in Southwest® gift card remains steadfast in the integrity of the tournament.
Without further ado, here is the next round's matchup:

Fortune favors the like. It's better to be "likey" than good. Luck be a like tonight. You know the old adages (okay, so I took a bit of creative likecense--ahem--license). The bottom line here, and the painfully transparent theme, I'm sure, is that the "LIKE" destinations ran the table in the first round. The committee did define that higher seeding would not only receive a better matchup, but would also get the choice between LIKE or SHARE on Facebook (of course, many smartly chose the former option).
All told, the stage has been set for the second round and it will begin Thursday, March 26 and end at 11:59pm (West Coast time) on Friday.
Our first round Southwest® gift card winners are in the process of being notified. You may have also noticed a change in the title of our Destination Bracket. We're proud to announce that Southwest® gift card has decided to purchase naming rights on the heels of first round success. Moving forward, the tourney will be known as the Destination Bracket presented by Southwest® gift card. We've enjoyed a wonderful partnership with Southwest® gift card and look forward to working with them in a greater capacity. While we weren't supposed to disclose the terms of our partnership, it involved the committee losing a game of three-on-three basketball. What can I say? Street rules were in place and the committee's used to governing the tournament.
Without further ado, here are your second round matchups:
As a reminder, for each matchup you will be able to either “Like” to vote for one destination, or “Share” to vote for another. Throughout the bracket, we will be staffing a team of expert commentators to provide a “basketball-like” analysis on Nuts About Southwest and Facebook.
Destination Bracket schedule (subject to change):
Round 1 (Full 16): Thursday, March 19 & Friday, March 20
Round 2 (Only 8): Thursday, March 26 & Friday, March 27
Round 3 (Last Four): Friday, April 3
Round 4 (Destination Championship): Monday, April 6

Destination Select, the governing body of the committee behind the RRPI (Rapid Rewards Performance Index) has made a late disqualification involving Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos. The fact that two cities were billed was deemed to be destination tending. This destination tending happened when the committee was tipped off at the last second, resulting in an automatic loss. Since the first round matchup between Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos and Panama City Beach has not begun, Destination Select has ruled that Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos will be replaced by Cancun.
Here's the updated seeding (with some contests already in progress):
The Destination Bracket updated due to destination tending.
If you're wondering why the committee or Destination Select didn't learn about this nuance sooner, please remember we fly planes--this is all fake. The destinations aren't, though! You can book 'em at southwest.com.

Where is San Francisco? No New York? C’mon, leaving Las Vegas out—what were you thinking? We’ve heard from a lot of fans who can’t believe the committee would leave out a few of these iconic cities. And while we agree, they are iconic, there is one simple explanation for why they didn’t make the cut: The Identity Index.
The Identity Index is a complex algorithm that measures destination resonation and association. It explores what makes a destination unique combined with Customer feedback; how do Customers frequently identify with a destination? Why are they visiting? In the case of the aforementioned cities, they performed neutral. The committee held them out because Identity Index declared them to be parallel and not distinctive in any specific category. They are super cities that excel in each category, and therefore cannot belong in a single one. Not to take away from the existing cities, of course, but this is about specialty destinations—not “the best overall city.”
The Identity Index is a component of the RRPI (Rapid Rewards Performance Index) was created by a group of ivy league anaylsts, and is currently going through the patent process.*
*disclaimer – this is all parody around a certain basketball tournament, but the destinations are real, and you can book now at southwest.com.

By now you all have dug in to your respective pools for the “big tournament” (which probably has a certain wild feline taking the crown). I can’t blame you for picking an undefeated team stacked with future pros, but I’m not here to get everybody riled up. No, I’m here bearing news of a little something fun we organized on Facebook. The Destination Bracket pits four categories against one another, and crowns one champion.
THE DESTINATION BRACKET HAS BEGUN AT FACEBOOK.COM/SOUTHWEST!
The destination categories:
• Adventure
• Historic
• Food
• Tropic
The destinations:
The Destination Bracket updated due to destination tending.
As there are only 16 spots, the destination selection committee meticulously narrowed down the offering. city was chosen based on RRPI (Rapid Rewards Performance Index). RRPI is a sophisticated algorithm that measures the following categories:
current inbound/outbound schedule
passenger traffic
social media sentiment analysis
Rapid Rewards points and Southwest gift cards redeemed by location (segmented also by points earned using the Chase Visa Rapid Rewards credit card).
Okay, fine. While the above would be an impressive analysis (and undoubtedly something smarter minds here at Southwest could come up with), the cities were basically drawn out of a hat. We couldn’t choose everyone, or else we’d be running the bracket for a year.
The tournament will consist of four rounds and starts Thursday, March 19. For each matchup you will be able to either “Like” to vote for one destination, or “Share” to vote for another.

Every seat has a story, and because of that, so does every Tweet and Facebook post; every social update is a glimpse into a person’s journey. It’s sometimes hard to get to know anyone in the age of information overload, but when a genuine display of humanity presents itself, it’s often unmistakable. Customer Susie Mann posted the following message to our Facebook wall, and it’s a shining example of Southwest Hospitality, and the impact other’s journeys can have on our own.
"On Saturday, November 15, 2014, my husband and I were aboard Southwest Airlines flight #4353 from Baltimore to Denver. Soon after take-off, one of the flight attendants made an announcement about a special passenger on board. Four year-old Leo from Burundi, Africa was traveling with a missionary companion to Denver after six months of extensive burn treatment and surgeries at Shriners Hospital in Boston.
I want everyone at Southwest Airlines to know how warm, generous and professional all of the flight attendants were on flight #4353 that day. They orchestrated all of us singing Happy Birthday to Leo (although it was not his actual birthday!) and gave him a chocolate donut. Leo was invited to help serve snacks to each passenger on the plane. The crew embraced this dear child in a genuine and touching manner for the entirety of the trip. They are to be commended. Although I told them of my respect for their professionalism and kindness, I only wish I had gotten their names for posting here.
Be well, Leo! Lots of people cheering you on."

What is Vintage Trouble? Or, more appropriately, who are Vintage Trouble? Four classy dudes decked out in suits, with a pretty solid taste in shoes, and the ability to rock out pretty hard. I actually didn't learn until this video that Vintage Trouble got its name from the song that's featured in the vid, "Blues Hand Me Down." If you haven't watched, you may be trying to connect the dots; during the song, singer Ty Taylor sings, "I come from Vintage Trouble, look out upon the one you found." Before the explanation, I simply thought it was a sort of homage, or self-prescribed call-out. Either way, I dug it, as the mid-song proclamation has a particularly (and literally) titular way about it, like when you hear the name of a movie an hour in and chills run up your spine because you feel like you're being let in on some big secret meaning. The second song (featured below) is of a more sentimental persuasion. "Nancy Lee" is a groovy tune written about what Ty imagines his father was like when he first laid eyes on Ty's mom, and began making her his girl. Vintage Trouble also took the stage as the headliner for this year’s Denver Day of Rock, a free day of music for Denver presented by Concerts for Kids to raise awareness for children. Southwest proudly partners with Concerts for Kids as a sponsor of the event to raise and distribute donations for more than 50 child-focused health and education organizations in the Denver area. This year’s event helped raise over $500,000!

I hold punctuality above most other virtues, and so it was a pleasant surprise when the guys from Parmalee got to Nashville Airport even before I did. The Carolina band got its name from the community of Parmale, where the guys used to practice. Humble beginnings, to be sure, as their positive attitudes and laid-back nature resembled what you'd find in a small, welcoming community. The primary song they showcased inflight, "Carolina," also resembled that hometown feel. It's all about being back home. Fitting, then, for Parmalee to play the song to a plane full of Passengers who may have been journeying back home from voyages large and small. Sometimes, even the heaviest of landings can be comforting when you know you're one step closer to the place where you belong. Be sure to check your local listings and tune in to Storme Warren's Headline Country on Great American Country next Thursday, May 30. You can also click the previous link to stream the full episode after it airs. Want to get your hands on the Southwest-themed GS Mini that Parmalee is playing? Southwest Airlines anticipates possible flight delays resulting from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) staffing reductions implemented on April 21. The duration and frequency of these possible delays is unknown at this time because the FAA has not yet provided precise information to airlines. As always, our full focus is on safety and serving our Customers and minimizing the impact of delays, regardless of their cause. Customers are encouraged to sign up for flight status notifications available at southwest.com and check local airport web sites for the most up-to-date information on possible flight delays. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on these channels as appropriate.

Until yesterday, I had never witnessed a Culture Committee meeting. Hearing about it was the stuff of legends; I knew it primarily as a gathering of Southwest's most spirited People. I'd heard myths about folks dressing in costumes, sporadically standing up and shouting, and grabbing the mic with reckless abandon. It didn't take but five minutes for me to confirm at least two of the previously mentioned anecdotes. To explain its function in a literal sense, the Culture Committee at Southwest Airlines is meant to evangelize The Southwest Way: providing Legendary Customer Service, and living The Golden Rule. The committee is comprised of all departments, all walks of life, and its members hail from all across the United States, carefully selected through an application process. "Drinking the Kool-Aid" is a popular saying at Southwest, usually from the outside looking in (many wear the term as a badge of honor, myself included). And if Southwest Employees drink the Kool-Aid, the Culture Commitee brews it. Slowly opening the meeting door, I spied the colors of the rainbow, all finely divided into groups. Above, you'll notice a member from the white group; below is the yellow group. Teams existed only to create some friendly competition during the two-day meeting (this is a competitive bunch). During my brief time with the Culture Committee, I evangelized one of the things I'm passionate about; curating and generating Southwest stories. One of the highlights is realizing that our actions, not words, usually write the story, and identifying what people are doing is the first step. Also, too, that even one email, or a simple conversation, can spiral into something bigger and achieve grander results than we had previously imagined. At the conclusion of my engagement, one of the Culture Committee members, Ann McGee-Cooper, spoke a very memorable quote from Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." This group of passionate individuals is so stark-raving committed to Southwest Airlines, and humanity in general, that it makes my heart sing. Indeed, they will change the world. In my eyes, they already have.

Dallas Love Field has never looked so good. Southwest Employees got a sneak peek at the new terminal, which will be open to the public next week. Among them was Stephen M. Keller, our photographer extraordinaire. To see the new digs in person is truly magical, but here's the next best thing:

When you're flying nearly 500mph at 35,000 feet above ground, life passes by pretty fast. Sure, Southwest has a suite of things to keep you entertained inflight: Video on Demand; WiFi; Live at 35; hilarious Flight Attendants. Heck, we've even transported a miniature seeing-eye horse, and a couple endangered sea turtles. But figuratively, you can't have the hare without the tortoise. Realizing the possibility that slow and steady may truly win the race, the answer became clear: it was time to float the grandest idea Southwest has ever had. It was time to take things slow. The tortoise and the hare. Hot air balloons and Boeing 737's, soaring fancy free, albeit at distinctly different altitudes, and at significantly separate speeds. Enjoy taking it slow with a scenic view while traveling from Boston to Denver. You will have a full 31 hours of seemingly neverending ground-peeping, star-gazing, and gusty nap time. (DISCLAIMER: Travel time greatly depends on wind speed) Or you could sit back and relax during an estimated six-hour jaunt from Dallas to Houston. Want to complete the Texas Triangle? No problem. We'll simply add to your existing fare, but you might have to get cozy with some strangers while on your way to San Antonio, and on back to Dallas. Like a city taxi, fares will be determined using a combination of distance and travel time. But don't worry about bringing your bags! On Southwest, baskets float free, and so do your first two pieces of luggage! Don't be full of hot air. Get purchasing that balloon fare! (DISCLAIMER: Happy April Fools Day)

It's easy to get lost in the crisp mountain air of Sun Valley, Idaho. Like its namesake suggests, the wind is pretty still in the valley, and like Southwest's hometown, the stars at night are big and bright. Plus, it's a pretty nice view, right? We have to do our part to keep it that way. We're here as the Official Airline of the Dent the Future conference, a meeting of brilliant minds brought together to bring significant change to the world, and refining the way we do things. We don't want to confine this effort to Sun Valley, so Southwest has teamed up with the Student Conservation Association (SCA), and America's young Veterans, to protect our most treasured parks, forests, and outdoor spaces. You have the opportunity to engage your fans and followers to get involved with Southwest Airlines and SCA to Dent the future of those who have risked their lives for our country. Simply head over to http://thesca.org/SWADent and donate on behalf of one of Dent's speakers. Not only are you helping a great cause, but you'll also help the speaker climb to the top of our donation leaderboard.

Vicci Martinez reminds me of one of my friends growing up. Vicci and I are the same age, and both her and the previously-mentioned friend bear a similar resemblance, but the parallels go far beyond face value. Sitting down and talking to Vicci, we chatted about music, her random foray into the master cleanse, Vine (she was Southwest's first), and life in general. There are people who during conversation come across as guarded, and with whom you can sense you're getting a watered-down version of the actual story. Not Vicci. She's a cool cat, and as genuine as they come. And that's not even to speak anything of Vicci's pipes. The woman can sing! While Live at 35 en route to Denver, Vicci performed Tiny Apple Trees off her album, Vicci. I don't know for sure whether there's intended wordplay, but Vicci definitely conquered the performance. See for yourself:

Reports indicate that the winglets of two Southwest aircraft made contact with each other while leaving the DTW terminal area from adjacent gates. Both aircraft returned to the gates. Initial inspections indicate neither aircraft sustained substantial damage, however each has been removed from service for further inspection and appropriate repair. Southwest is accommodating our customers on other flights out of Detroit.

Brian Lusk will be missed dearly. I had the opportunity to meet him while I was a SWA Intern and his passion for the airline industry is admirable. I will always remember his ‘Maryland One’ Southwest Boeing 737 model on his desk. Seeing that model on my first day at Southwest was a clear reminder that I would fit right in. He did a fantastic job of sharing photos and stories of Southwest's rich history.
