Not all that surprising of a boarding position if the OP purchased a Business Select ticket. Is the position alone worth the extra cost for Business Select? No... so it's also worth checking at the desk for upgraded boarding which can be purchased for $40 and can also get you a A1-A15 position, the same numbers Business Select tickets are assigned. --TheMiddleSeat

I'm what you call "elitist." I travel countless days per year and earn that sustain...and the perks that come along with it like being able to standby onto earlier flights for free. As has been stated, SW offers this perk to its most valuable customers for free. Other customer can pay to upgrade to the full far, again...as has been stated. Honesty hour: this will not change, and SW's response to the OP was not bull...it was truth. If SW allowed anyone to buy a ticket on any flight and then just swap to the earlier one with no cost, they would lose money. And SW offers way too many perks that other airlines don't that make this policy OK with me. Good luck finding another airline that will consistently let non-status holders standby for free. If you do, it might be the better choice for your travels, and that is OK.

@Leboucher I also work at a large Company who receives hundreds of applications for one position. Unfortunately due to the volume of applicants, only the top candidates with all the qualifications, and also related experience get a response back with an interview date. All the other less qualified applicants are not contacted. Continue to look for opportunities that you are qualified for and apply! You will land your dream job eventually.

This has become a common issue for people traveling to Hawaii and it appears check-in desk agents have become more accustomed to the request as compared to the phone agents who may not have as much experience with issues like this. Numerous reports from other Hawaii travelers indicate you're very likely to have the bags checked through to your final destination without any issues. My personal experience is that sometimes you do have to be a tad persistent and allow a little extra time in case the agent needs to get assistance from a supervisor. As @bec102896 said you will need to use the full service desk, not a kiosk or curbside check in. Enjoy Hawaii! --TheMiddleSeat

Liquids in containers larger than 3.4oz must be in a checked bag. As many containers 3.4oz or less that can fit in quart size plastic bag can be carried on. The only specified limit for checked baggage liquid I have seen is for alcohol, no more than 5 liters per bag so it's probably safe to use that as a guide. You also need to keep weight in mind if transporting large quantities, 50lbs per checked bag unless you want to pay for an overweight bag. Also remember batteries for vapping must be carried on, do not put them in checked baggage. --TheMiddleSeat

Great question, @CK_PIT! While your EarlyBird is guaranteed on the new flight as long as the change is made prior to 36 hours of departure, we don't share details of the assignment process externally.

How delayed was the flight that caused all this unnecessary confusion? An 15 minute delay can usually be made up in the air with no issues.

To my knowledge, travel funds aren't valid by "company", they are valid by "individual." Thus, an individual's funds cannot be transferred to anyone else, even if they booked on behalf of a company and used a company credit card to pay for the flight. --Jessica

I have, and just like gift cards purchased through any other reputable store, they work fine. I typically use the online (samsclub.com), emailed gift cards which can be purchased in larger amounts and can save a few bucks with just a couple minutes of work. You also avoid the multiple forms of payment issue mentioned. --TheMiddleSeat

The exceptions are the Rapid Rewards Credit Cards (all bonus points do count), and hotel bookings through Southwest Hotels (all bonus points currently do count, although small print may say otherwise). @Cable-TV-Guy wrote: Chgoflyer, TNX for the input. Yes, perhaps I'm a tough judge! For 36 years, my job required me to be both an engineering and human relations perfectionist. And, like I said, I started flying when it was pretty much a luxury for most people. As far back as the mid-1960's, my parents and I were flying several times a year. Men wore suits and women wore dresses. And, yes times had to change as a result of 9/11. But, when I attended a business meeting at the Virginia State Police Academy in Ruchmond a decade or so ago, there was a sign in the lecture hall that read, "You Can Be Tough As Nails And Courteous". As for the Southwest part of the experience, except for the last flight, it was pretty good overall. And yes, the FA on the second flight was specific about laptops. And, yes I saw people using laptops on the ground. I'm already looking at the SWA website trying to plan my next trip. That's how satisfied I was with them. Ok, glad to hear that you're generally pleased, despite your overall rating. Personally, I'm not sure I would be giving more business to anyone I graded a "C-/D+". Obviously, things did change after 9/11. But many of the changes that have happened to air travel since then frankly have nothing to do with that event, and are more a result of things like economic factors. One minor comment -- not to beat a dead horse -- but just in case it's unclear, laptops can be used on the ground. The only time they need to be stowed is during takeoff and landing. 😉 Hope your future air travels are great!

@chgoflyer I think we interpreted the OP differently! I initially read their post as saying that they booked a flight with points, and wanted to change their return flight home prior to travel, and it was a 21,000 point increase (hence paying for the difference in fare, change fee info, etc). But re-reading it, it sounds like they were trying to change it on the day of travel itself, which is a different situation. I'm not nearly as familiar with same day standby rules, so thanks for explaining it! It makes sense now why there was such a large point variation. --Jessica

Strong applicants need to display integrity and honesty at all times with their current and hopeful employer. These characteristics say alot about ones work ethic and professionalism. If you are not having open and meaningful conversations about your career path with your current employer/ leader, you are not giving them the opportunity to be supportive of you. From my experience, most employees who have good relationships with their employer would not have an issue with a short phone call while at work. The current employer might not be thrilled with losing a great employee, but certainly should not be a road block. Side note...I work for a large company that like SWA always has hundreds of applicants for one position. When I am looking to hire new employees, I research their social media accounts and the tone of what's being posted. If a potential employee posts on a discussion board and I perceive that one is coming across as playing the blame game against a recruiter or my company, it's a red flag that the applicant will not be moving forward in the hiring process.

But I'm here.🙂 Just this past week I was able to finish up a project early and head home at a decent time instead of the late flight I had previously booked. When I went to the ticket counter and asked about same day standby the agent must have had some idea that i may make it, and booked my luggage on the earlier flight even though I had to go to the gate to be cleared for my boarding pass. I'm not sure what the parameters are exactly for checking bags into the later flight knowing you would request an earlier standby flight, or when they go ahead and check luggage on the earlier one even if the ticket counter agent can't confirm you right then.
