I assume you are asking about non-stop flights, not direct which in Southwest speak is a flight that stops, but doesn't change planes. These days Southwest is routing most of their international flights through a handful of airports and having people connect through those few places. Based on this trend I wouldn't expect a non-stop OAK-PVR to return, but you never know. Submit your feedback directly to Southwest so they know the demand is there. Without having been there, watching over your shoulder there's no way to tell if this was a system error or perhaps you didn't actually complete the change process. It's very unfortunate, but you'll have to go with what you're being told. Hopefully you are able to purchase another flight and get home. When you do get home you could write to Southwest and explain what you believe happened, they may be able to look into it afterwards. I suspect a little more patience will be required. Yes, I understand the terms say 4 weeks, but Chase, Southwest, and the process of how they interact to post points like this always seems to take a tad more time than stated. If it were me I would wait for one more week, that makes 5, then reach out to Chase. I don't have the terms for that promotion, if you do it would be great if you could post them.

@SC1 the promotional Companion Passes are typically awarded shortly before the period when the pass is available to use. In this case, that appears to be August 15 so I would expect the pass to be ready to use sometime within 30 days of August 15. The official terms and conditions of the offer may have more info if you happen to still have them.

Upgrade to Business Select (not Business Class) is a completely separate thing, and in my opinion, not a good idea. Immediately after check-in via the app or on southwest.com you will see the option for upgraded boarding. This gets the purchaser a spot in A1-15 (if available) and usually runs about $40. This is sold per flight segment so if you have a layover you will need to pay the upgrade cost times two. If you already have Business Select then you would not need to do this, just your companion.

Yes, the companion has a reserved space on the plane. Southwest no longer oversells their flights so unless there is an unexpected equipment change, no one with a reservation should be bumped or unable to fly.

You'll have to refer to the terms of the promotion to see when the CP will be activated on your account. Once it is activated you will be able to designate and then add a companion to trips you have booked. As far as booking goes, either option works. If you are concerned the flight is going to sell out then go ahead and hold the spot now with a paid reservation for the companion which you can cancel later when adding the companion. Be mindful that Wanna Get Away fares will be refunded as travel credits, Anytime and Business Select fares can be refunded back to the form of payment. The ideal way to book the placeholder reservation is with points as they are quickly and easily refunded.

And yes, someone will reply in the morning that you can also dispute the charge on your credit card. I find giving Southwest an opportunity to resolve the issue directly with you to be the better option and would not be surprised if Southwest also provides a voucher for the inconvenience. You won't get that dealing with your credit card company.

When arriving from most international locations, including Costa Rica, you will need to go through customs at your first stop in the United States. When you do this you will claim your bags in the customs area, clear customs, then recheck your bags. There is usually a separate bag re-check area so you don't have to go through the normal check-in area with all the other people checking in. I don't know about HOU, but some airports will also make you go through TSA security screening after you drop bags off.

Southwest currently serves the United States and 10 additional countries, clearly they are well versed in operating in other countries and do so at competitive prices. If you look at where they go though you will see the commonality is the destinations are all big for American tourism. While many South American cities are popular destinations, they are not as hot for tourism as a Jamaica, Costa Rica, or Aruba. My guess is you're more likely to see Canada added sooner than later, but I'm not sure South America makes the cut given the hottest tourism cities such as Rio de Janeiro might be too far for a 737. I'll let someone else check that.

@BsYadav69 yes, TSA does occasionally perform random ID checks at the gate when boarding. Nothing to be alarmed about and certainly nothing to sue anyone over. If you have specific issues with how it was done submit your feedback to TSA.
