You should reach out to Southwest 800-435-9792 that way they can try to see what options are available. If no flights exist now because of the schedule changes you would be entitled to a refund to your original form of payment just tell the representative that is what you would like that way maybe you can rebook the return on a different airline. -Blake

Agreed. My wife and I live in separate cities right now. I thought using the CP would be tough. Ironically, Covid made it easier, since I spend more time working remotely, with her... either at her house or somewhere more exotic. And more over, the extra CP she earned for Jan and Feb means we're taking weekend vacations with the kids. Double the benefits. With all the complaining that people can't use it, it seems unreasonable for SWA to extend it ad nauseum until 2022 or 2023 so that everyone feels they got "what they earned". I earned my pass this year, so the extension does me no good. But if they wanted to increase load factors THIS year, finding some way to issue "companion companion passes" might be interesting. My wife is paying for her tickets for these Jan Feb trips, and we take the kids. She'll be my companion again on March 1. Not sure how they could implement it, but expanding the CP for 2021 rather than extending it might bring them revenue and placate the whiners. Maybe.

Yeah, ironic that giving people a year to gain status, and then giving them the rest of the current year free, as a bonus, has created this conundrum. If there were never any overlap, people would feel less cheated. And I wish there weren't three threads on the same topic

@Skibum wrote: Same problem here. I canceled 7 flights today and I have to rebook and complete flights before Feb 17th. Hotels closed at all my destinations. Stay at home order in state that I live. I would NEVER cancel a bunch of future reservations months in advance. Why? You don't know what the virus situation will be month from now. Besides, if the airline cancels / changes your flight you an get your money back. When you cancel, the best you'll get is a travel fund. If the situation doesn't improve by 2/17, you'll have the ability to turn expired travel funds into vouchers. Problem is vouchers will cost $100/each. You can get around this by using multiple travel funds to buy new more expensive tickets before 2/17 and then cancelling those tickets before 2/17. You cn in essence turn 7 $100 fees into 1 $100 fee. There are lots of $1000+ business select round trips for sale out there

The carry on limit is very strict: “Carryon items are limited to one bag plus one smaller, personal-type item. Southwest Airlines limits carryon bag dimensions to 10 x 16 x 24 inches.” No exceptions here. The info from the more “detailed” baggage allowance page answers most of your questions: Excess Baggage Each piece of baggage in excess of the free baggage allowance specified above that is not in excess of 62 inches (L+W+H) and 50 lbs. or less will be accepted for a charge of $75.00 per item one-way. Excess baggage which is also overweight or oversized will be charged excess baggage plus the applicable oversize or overweight charge. Weight and Size Allowance Southwest will accept the first two checked bags for free provided that the bags do not exceed 50 lbs and 62 inches (L+W+H). Overweight items from 51 to 100 pounds and oversized items in excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches will be accepted for a charge of $75.00 per item one-way. Only one $75.00 charge applies if the piece is both oversized and overweight, regardless of the weight as long as it does not exceed 100 lbs. Excess baggage which is also overweight or oversized will be charged excess baggage plus the applicable oversize or overweight charge. ——————————— Any item weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped as Air Cargo. However, Customers cannot use SWA Cargo unless classified as a Known Shipper as defined by the TSA or TSA approved Indirect Air Carriers (IAC). For full details about shipping cargo, visit www.swacargo.com. So you get you carry on items PLUS two free checked bags, as long as they are under 50 lbs and the size restrictions. Beyond that, you pay $75 per extra checked bag. How many extra they will allow is not exactly specified, but I have a feeling it is at the discretion of the airline. Simply: two carry on items, two free checked bags, pay per items after that. If you want to find out if there is an official max to the number of checked items allowed, you can reach out to SW directly using a Contact Us method below.

That means everyone on the same reservation gets to board together and pick their seat earlier. Because we can all agree the more time you get with your people, the better.” B.S.! NOT TRUE!!! One of the most BAIT & SWITCH policies by any airline! This is ridiculous. I've been an A-List member for 15 years & A-List preferred for couple years with a companion pass for my kid for the last 4 years. I read this as simple English & then the Southwest gate handlers at Phoenix Airport gate D-7 embarrassed me by first feigning ignorance about the policy & then clarifying that "the companion needs to be on the same reservation #" which they know is impossible!! Wow! Funny thing is I fly all over the US & only Southwest Gate handers at Orlando & Phoenix enforce & are happy to rub it in your face. I've flown & had my kid board along with me in so many other Airports like San Diego, Austin, Raleigh-Durham, San Jose, LAX, Ontario-LA, Orange County etc & they never make any fuss of a 8-year old boarding with me. And now Southwest rubs it in my face again! Not nice at all. " It seems that you're upset because an agent applied the rules. Just because you've been allowed to sidestep them before doesn't mean you will always be able to do so. The policy is clear. It unfortunately just doesn't apply to your situation. And it never has. (At least not yet.) For all customers traveling together with a A-Lister to board together they have to be checked in together, and the system does that as long as they're on the same reservation. This is mentioned clearly, twice, in the policy announcement you posted. ”We know getting more time with the people most important to you is everything. That's why we're spreading the love of one of our most-coveted A-List and A-List Preferred perks. Starting March 12, anyone on a reservation with an A-List or A-List Preferred Member can board when they do. That means everyone on the same reservation gets to board together and pick their seat earlier. Because we can all agree the more time you get with your people, the better.” That email also included a LEARN MORE link, with more important details. Unfortunately, those traveling on a Companion Pass are not on the same reservation as the CP holder. That's just how the system does it. This sadly highlights a significant flaw in Southwest's otherwise well-intentioned A-List boarding policy. Southwest has stated that they're aware of the disappointment this causes for their Companion Pass holders, and that they are working on a solution. The good news is that there have recently been reports that this may be happening now, possibly as a test run. Hopefully an announcement will follow at some point. Until there's a policy (and system) change, you should keep in mind that the A-List Boarding Policy doesn't apply to your Companion, but will apply when traveling with anyone else on the same reservation. In your particular case, you could ask the Ops Agent, prior to boarding, if they will allow your child to board with you. If not, you should board together at your child's assigned position. Other people in your situation often find benefit in purchasing EarlyBird Check-In for their Companion. Hope this helps. (Just a reminder that posting the same thing on multiple threads is a violation of forum policy.)

Southwest couldn't care less, they are like.... thank you for your money & being a suc*ker. Business Select and A List get you only two things: A better boarding spot and likely an aisle or windows seat in the front of the plane. I guess A-List preferred and Business Select get you more RR points/$ spent. Give it a break.

@kerlimeke75 I don't know if you have already flown or not, but here are some thoughts. If your travel isn't before Dec 1, then don't pay for the early boarding if you're limited in funds. If you're not, then it could be a good option. The main key is this! Since you can't check in until 24 hours prior to the flight takeoff, get all your information into the "Check-In" tab 5 min prior to the 24 check-in time. Wait, and the moment that the clock hits exactly 24 hours, click check-in and you should get a decent boarding number that will allow you a window seat in the middle to back part of the plane. Chances are you could be like my wife who often gets between A-40 to A-60. Bags are subjective. But if they aren't really OVERSIZED, you should be able to get it on, but it has to be able to fit, without trouble, into the overhead bin.

The situation with a lot of the cities in Central and South America is that they are served by one flight a day from US gateway cities. The airline wants to use one plane a day to do the outbound and return flights. That means that US departures tend to be morning flights. If you are coming from the west coast to get to say Houston, and have a three+ hour flight AND lose two hours heading to the central time zone, a 7 am departure from LAX gets you in to Houston at 12 -- add in another 45 minutes for a legal connection, and your international connecting flight is probably long gone by 12:45pm. I just checked. For tomorrow the earliest non stop out of LAX leaves at 8:50 am. So the earliest connecting flight out of Houston would have to depart at about 2:35 or later.

@nanonanosw wrote: @dfwskier Thanks for your opinion on this. I disagree, but your information is a good addition to this conversation. I'm wondering if you could clarify a statistic that I think is a bit misleading in your post... "The chances of dying from COVID-19 contracted on a flight are between 1 in 400,000 and 1 in 600,000 depending on your age and other risk factors. That's according to Arnold Barnett, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has been trying to quantify the odds of catching Covid-19 while flying" With all we now know about the potential for debilitating long term effects from the virus, and the risk of silent carrier's exposing other more vulnerable people, contracting Covid is a much higher risk and more relevent concern than dying from Covid is for most of us. Do you have any statistics to share on the chances of "just" contracting Covid on an airplane? I seem to recall the odds are 1 in 5000 to 1 in 7000 - or something close to that with a range of severity ranging from not even knowing you have it to sniffles, to mild fever and shortness of breath, to severe fever and shortness of breath to hospitalization -- and everything in between.. I am unaware of any statistics that provide additional granularity on severity (chances of getting it and being hospitalized for example) -
