I have never been in boarding group C. I'm sure it can be less than ideal. Prior to the increase I bought early bird for almost every flight. Now that the cost has gone up I don't buy it as often. I just set a reminder and make sure I check in 24 hours in advance. I carry the SW Priority card which gives me 4 seat upgrades a year. When I've had high B numbers I've used those seat upgrades. You have options to stay out of C boarding. Spend some money, upgrade your CC or be ready to checkin 24 hours before the flight.

Southwest is not doing a good job of handling this entirely self-inflicted situation. My flight on Monday was significantly delayed. They knew that this would be happening by the middle of the previous day. They notified me at 2:30am for a 6:50am flight. If they had notified me the day before, I could have possibly rescheduled. There were other possibilities. This was poor handling. Southwest should do better at being proactive in handling problems caused by poor management. However, I did get an email from them later in the week giving me $100 of LUV. I'd rather they had get me to work on time. I'd rather they would have let me know about my delayed flight earlier. I suspect it was easier for Southwest to make me late to work than to deal with me trying to reschedule. For that, Southwest, you suck. But, as bad as Southwest is sometimes, they are generally better than any of the other choices, and no one else would have proactively sent me a voucher. Now, if SWA stock would just improve. I've lost a chunk of change on SWA and BA stock in the last few months.

I find no record of a contract between Southwest and the FA union after 2016-2018. In mid February 2020 the two groups were about to head into mediation. I bet the virus stopped that cold. So I'd' bet the groups are negotiating again. A typical union thing is to do something like this during contract negotiations. edit add: I bet that once the FAs have a new contract that they won't be at the "breaking point" anymore.

The rules don't change daily in regards to flying. They have been pretty concrete since the pandemic began last year. The only thing that may have potentially changed was wearing masks in the airport and on airplanes - the mandate was set to expire in September but it has been extended until January 2022. --Jessica

You are almost a year late in posting this - Southwest extended funds to 2022 for canceled flights *if* you canceled your flight between March and September 7, 2020. Did you do this? When did you cancel your flight? Based on your fund expiration date, I assume you booked in January 2020 for sometime later in the year. If you canceled the flight before March or later than September 7, your funds were never extended. --Jessica

If she can't fly with a mask on, Southwest is probably not the best choice for you. I believe some of the other airlines have more accommodating policies. Different airlines are appropriate for different people with different needs. As someone who needs to fly pretty much every week to feed my family, Southwest's policy is right for me. I can tell you that if you do plan to fly Southwest, and you are asked if she can/will wear a mask the entire time, you should answer with an emphatic 'yes'. Any hedging or lack of sureness in your answer will likely lead to you being denied boarding.

I don't think I've ever gotten an alert telling me to check in - when would they send this? Not everyone checks in right at 24 hours (although many do). I do get an alert *after* I've checked in telling me my boarding position. I also get an alert when the plane is boarding, but that's about it. --Jessica

FYI: It's been widely reported that Twitter and Facebook DM replies from Southwest are taking much longer than "usual" these days. For many it's taking a week or so to get a real response (there are auto-replies sent initially), and for some, they've not received any reply at all, even to follow-up messages. The chat function, when available, seems to be the best route at the moment.
